what else to stuff in kong? apparently, my pup is the only dog i know who does not like peanut butter. what else can i stuff the kong toy with? |
cheese wiz! Probably not the healthiest, but tastes great! |
At the pet stores they have this stuff in a can you squirt into Kong toys. It's a flavor paste treat made especially for those types of Kongs. Schatzie goes nuts over it... :D |
i'll try cheese wiz! and see how it works. the kong stuffing they have, i only saw pb flavored and liver flavored, both of which are not on bunjee's "must have" list. :( do they have a cheese flavored stuffing? for those of you who use kong toys, does your puppy enjoy digging the stuffing outta the toy? i don't know if it's the pb, or just that my pup doesn't like to do the work of getting the food outta the toy... he'll try for like 15 mins and then quit. i guess he's more into immediate gratification, just like his mommy. :p |
You can put yoqurt in it and freeze it. |

15 minutes is quite a long time to stay focused on a Kong really. I'm guessing that they have the attention span of a child and just loose interest. LOL about "immediate gratification"... :D |

although... for somereason he is capable of focusing on my fingers and hands as his chew toy for much more than 15 mins at a time. go figure. |

guess i'm off to the market to do some food shopping tonight! |
I doesnt matter what flavor but I put fruit yoqurt in ours. |
I usually fill Joey's kongs with canned dog food and then freeze it so that it takes him longer to get it out. Alternately, I fill it with dry dog food with little pieces of cheese mixed in and cheese to cover the larger hole. Nuke it to melt cheese and let cool to harden cheese. Sliced processed cheese ends up especially hard this way which means it takes longer for him to get it out. I prefer that he get less people food and more dog food in it, but that's just me. |
i think i might be slightly confused about how the kong works. i got the small breed puppy version: blue and white and rubbery is he suppose to be able to A. chew on the entire kong hard enough to squeeze the filling out? B. wait for the frozen filling to melt and slowly lick it out? C. somehow contort his tongue enough to scoop the filling out? D. something else all together? right now bunjee's mouth and bite is not big or strong enough to do A. he doesn't have the patience to complete B without leaving it to melt into a mess. so what i do is losely pack the kong with kibble, partially close it with PB on the end (the bigger hole) so he'll scoop out a little of the PB with kibble stuck to it, then shake it like he does with his toys so that the kibbles fall out and he can munch. is this how it's suppose to work? or is he just too young for a kong? |
I believe that the stated method is A - chew on the Kong to squeeze the filling out. Joey usually does D, however. He picks it up and throws it so that little bits fall out which he licks up. Then he throws it again. The real purpose, though, is entertainment/distraction whichever way they choose to get at the goodies! |
that sounds like how bunjee does it too, except he shakes the kong. i just have to help him out a little in the beginning 'cause he can't get pass the initial stopper of pb. i'm going to switch the stopper to cheese or yogurt and see if it works better for him. thanx everyone! |
i got edgar a stick shaped kong. wound up getting him the red one. then i spread pb all over it, esp into the grooves. sometimes i freeze it. i leave it for him in the bathroom tub while i'm gone and he'll still play w/it after all the pb has been licked off. my reason for the shape is that i want to make sure i can clean that thing. i have also seen suggestions of soaking it in broths and freezing it, then giving it to them. i may try that but i'm not sure how much messier that is than the pb. hope that helps :) |
I thought I was the only one who was having trouble understanding the whole kong thing  . My question is, how full do you pack the kong? I was just putting a few pieces of kibble in it and Nikko would empty it out pretty quickly. As for the peanut butter, do you put it all the way in? I was just lining the rim of it with peanut butter. I guess I was doing it all wrong. |
I think its all of the above! :D I know, not much help right? For Rusty, he's a big guy so we just put PB or something like that in it and he has a blast trying to get it out. For Tucker we put a few lose kibbles in there and he throws it around and rolls it so that the food falls out. ;) |
depending on the size you get i'm not sure if they can get all the stuff out. if you want to not spend $7/8 a can, buy a decorators tube (like they use on cakes) and put stuff in it to squeeze in. i have the same problem w/the treats falling out or being too easy to get out. |
Try cream cheese. They LOVE it! |
won't it get messy once whatever it is that you freeze up melt? like pb, cheese, and even cream cheese? |

I'm kidding, we never have much of a mess from the kong. |
i would love to try this...but I would hate to come home and creamcheese or pb are all over their bed and such. I mean...I don't mind since nyma&pa will have to clean it. lol.... |
i give mine to edgar in the bathtub. he stays in the bathroom when i'm away and it keeps him from eating more paint/drywall (whole different story! ugh), then by the time i'm home, he's licked up the mess! weee! the puppy vaccuum! since it retains the scent and some of the pb is stuck in hard to reach places he'll still play w/it in the living room. |

For a short while, we debated calling him "Hoover" because he's such a little vacuum cleaner! |
I use a number of different things in the kongs--my hubby swears that I put anything in them that will assure that they get under his feet..He steps on them all the time. I put sticky things in but all the way inside to the small end. The idea is to keep their interest so if they can get at the goodie quickly they lose interest. Mine leave them and keep going back to them. It is like they find a new toy, everytime they discover it again. You can scrub the inside of the toy with a bottle brush. I have put really yucky ones in the dishwasher but usually soap and water do the job. I actually use more soup bones that kongs. I buy the cross-cut thigh bones. Clean out all the marrow, boil them for a good while to kill any germs, wash with brush, rinse and give it to them. Then, every so often they get washed just like the kongs and boiled in fat free broth or bouillion cubes..I have done this for years and never had a bone splinter-I know some dogs can break them but not my critters. |
Get the kong brand of stuff to put in it with some treats (or I just put food) with it. |
