1 Attachment(s) Laddy is a 4.8lb yorkie and people mistake him for a silky because they say his body is longer lol. I just smile and say who knows but isn't he adorable :). They look a little stumped for words after that lol. |

1 Attachment(s) My Mylee is a Silky Terrier. Both her parents are the AKC standard 9-11 lbs but she is barely 7lbs. Other than her weight, she is ALL Silky Terrier by appearances. For me, a true Silky and a true Yorkie do look different (as adults :)) but many people have mixed the two and the offspring of these mixes are harder to differentiate. Most people I run into call her a Yorkie, but many people here (my area in KS) are not aware that there is a separate breed known as a Silky Terrier because they are less common. I continually watch the classifieds in my area and notice a couple of Silky advertisers say their babies will be "small" 4-6 lbs fully grown, which we all know they cannot guarantee, and it makes me highly suspect, but shows people are breeding them off standard too. Also, I believe when some refer to a Yorkie as "Silky" they may be referencing the type of hair since many call thier silky coated Yorkies a "silky." I ran into a lady the other day who commented on my "Yorkie" and said she has two Yorkies too. When I told her Mylee is a Silky she said her Yorkie is a Silky too. OP your baby is adorable and no doubt will bring you many many years of joy. |

my first check for a silky is the shape of the head and the set of the ears, then the lenght of the body against the height, and last the weight.. I can detect a silky from a mile away...LOL:D |

Bentley is adorable! Pay no attention to the comments; I heard the same thing before Graysee was even 3! Now she will be 5 this December, and she weighs an even 12 pounds. If I were to guess, I'd even say she looks more like a Silky than a Yorkie, What does it matter? Unless you're a stickler for an AKC purebred classification, and planning to show your dog professionally, who cares? If you love your Bentley, and he loves you in return, isn't that what it's all about? Next time someone asks, just tell them that he's a "Sorkie", and let them figure it out! :animal36 |
What's kind of funny is.... I'm so surprised that so many people know what a Silky is! They're somewhat "rare" and I had never heard of them until people starting asking me if Jackson was one. So I'm always impressed when people guess it! Most can't tell a Chihuahua from a Pomeranian, lol. |
