Greasy hair? My 15 week yorkie, Pippa, has very greasy looking hair. I brush it and it looks fluffy but then within an hour it looks greasy again. I gave her her first bath a few days ago, thinking that would solve the problem but once again she looked nice and fluffy for about an hour and then she was back to looking greasy. Is this just a typical yorkie puppy hair phase or is there something I can do to correct it? She looks adorable regardless but just a little scruffy looking. There are a few different things that can make the coat look like that. The quality of food is a major factor. You should feed a good quality puppy food with Omega 3's in it. Make sure the shampoo and conditioner you use do not have sulfates that strip the skin of it's natural oils as this makes the skin over produce oil so you will find you have a very oily coat very soon after a bath. An all natural product works best to keep the skin from over producing oil. Sometimes if people are sweaty or have hand cream or some other substance on their hands when petting the dog it can cause the coat to become separated quickly. |
So this is definately not normal for a yorkie puppy? I was hoping it was just a phase they all go through till they get a bit older...I feed her Acana puppy smalll breed formula, I washed her with vet shampoo called Virbac Epi-Soothe that is natural oat-grain derivative, soap-free, and we definately do not have a sweaty palm problem as where we live in Canada is very mild and not hot at all. Hmmmm...weird! Oh well she is adorable regardless:) |

Is she really greasy all over or is it just her head? We all have oils in our hands. Some Yorkies do tend to have thin hair especially as puppies. It may be that her coat is just thin and appears to separate because there is no undercoat? Yorkies do not have the double coat that most dogs have and if it is especially thin it may separate easily. |

Her hair is thin/fine for sure. I can see her scalp on her head, it's coming in grey and almost looks like she's going bald. Plus on her back it parts down the spine like human hair does. As she gets older will her hair thicken up or will it always be like this? It's not so bad that I think she has a condition, no odours and yeast (yet). |
