Hiding bones and crying When I give Joel his chew chew(thats what he calls his bones) he hides it and constantly sits and stares at where he hid it and also cries and whines and I don't know why. Im guessing he's gaurding it, and I pretend I don't know where it is bc if I "find" it he has to hide it again:rolleyes: So any idea why he whines at it, I feel bad since he acts worried when he hides it:( |
:D Oh I don't know WHY he does it - but, rest assured, a lot of them do this....:) It's probably a throw-back to their old prey-days, making the kill then hiding it for future 'use'....maybe they had to show their 'masters' what they'd done, how good they were at their job? Maybe!! :D Sally + Harry x |
Yeah, our Ms Daisy demonstrates a similar behavior. If she has a new bone (usually a good one, like a dental chew) she will attempt to bury it under a blanket to save it for later after she is temporarily finished. However, she is NEVER satisfied with where she had hid it, and continually "digs it up" and then reburies it. I have tried to help her out by burying it more thoroughly so it could not be seen, but she still digs it out and carries on this obsessive behavior. Dont worry about it, even a Yorkie will get tired of this behavior after a while  |
Callie will cry while she is carrying around a bone to hide but not after she hides it. She also has to re-hide it if any one "finds" it. I think its just something they do. It really can make me laugh sometimes, I love watching her because it like you can see her thinking. |
There are certain treats and chew toys that I have given Gracie that she takes one smell of and starts to hide it under something right away. She never chews it and never eats it. Other things like her bully sticks she will start to chew right away. Most of the things that she hides are things that are made of ingredients that she is known not to care much for and usually have a strange smell to them. Sometimes she will get them out and take them to a new hiding place but never uses them as they were intended. Needless to say I don't buy them anymore as I don't need to find these things in and under the furniture, dog beds and blankets. |
Ok, It's nice to know Joels not the only one :D |
I started a new post a few days ago about Suzi's behavior, she does this with her toy frog, it is small, and for the last few days has carried it in her mouth crying and whining. She was recently spayed and had a dental cleaning, so I wondered if it had something to do with that, She was acting very funny though, she would com out of the bedroom, circle the coffee table with her toy and go back in the bedroom, or she would go to the dining area with that frog in her mouth, do the same thing, and back in the bedroom. she will leave her toy right next to her, not bury it. Plus she is possessive towards her frog. She hasdone this before once, and it does not last too long. My friend was here and watched her do this several times, thought it was cute, but after a while it did get a little annoying. I just let her be and carry on, She will stop when she has had enough. The funny part of this is it is always the same toy. LOL |
Tibbe does the same thing - as have all my 3 Yorkies. They worry over their hidden prize - fretting whether it will be soon found and taken from them. I wonder if Tibbe is dissatisfied with his hiding spots available in the house, knowing they are not hidden from interested passers-by of his species when tucked under a couch pillow or beside the bookcase. The house offers little in the way of good hiding places. Even outside dogs know that a well-dug hole can be easily sniffed out, especially when the hidden object is food or bones or things with their scent on it, so they know a hiding spot is never really permanent from another canine or canine-like species. In the wild, they either have to have a large enough pack to protect their kill in a given central area or keep hiding pieces of it to keep it as safe as possible from other predators until fully eaten. Otherwise, kind of like us & our fear & worry of burglars, they are paranoid. |

That sound like what Joel does :) |

That makes sense, and he probably does it more bc Rosco tries to get his bones:eek: But its funny, after he hides it and stares at it he also watches everyone to make sure we dont find it and he'll even check Roscos mouth. My sister tells him "Joel, you kinda give it away when you keep staring where you hid it" lol |

This totally makes sense! Thor doesn't bury things, but I've heard other people talking about the whining and such. But yeah, they must be so stressed about the poor security! |

Ha ha! I read something about a german shepard "hired" to guard a trove of antique teddy bears overnight (seriously). Let's just say the teddy bears where not in mint condition the following morning. Nevertheless, photos showed the german shepard to be very pleased with his work. |
Lola is the worst at this, I have posted about this before, only she puts her toys in places where she can not get it back without help from me. She now drops her toy in waste paper baskets and whines until I get it out or finally jut tips the basket over, or pushes it under a piece of furniture or behind my file cabinet, all places that she can push the toy into but not retrieve it fun. We swim and she has her own raft, now she pushes her toy off it every few mins. into the water and then stares at it floating away, then will either jump in to get it. I don't understand this behavior, but I do not it drives us nuts, be glad if you babies put their toys in places they can retrieve them from. She is exhausted today, I can honestly say she carried her new toy around for about 8 hours straight yesterday, squeaking it the majority of the time till she was huffing and puffing, She took it up and down three flights of stairs, and even jumped off the bed after lights out and ran down to the kitchen to get it, I finally had to pick it up and hide it, the second she was out of bed this morning she was staring up at the bar barking for me to get it, she must smell these toys because she did not see where I hid it. I went out for a few hours this morning and since I have been home she has slept all day because I think she is so tired from all that squeaking yesterday. LOL she will never have a double chin from all that squeaking action she does:D. |

been up for days my tommy is doing the same with crying over his chewy's. Now when it time for bed not only do we have crying on hiding it but now all toys have to be in bed too. I woke up with a bully stick in my hair. He has always slept with us but we are to the point on needing much sleep but I also I don't want him to be stress about his toys and chewy and then be crying about not being in his bed.... help! |
Cuddles will also do a similar behavior. She will bring her bone onto the couch, cry at it, then toss it off and bring it back up. I've noticed she only does it with her bones that are almost all the way eaten or a new bone she doesn't like. LOL |
Bob does the same thing with bones lol Crying, whine, moving it from one place to the other, getting it struck under the furniture, |
1 Attachment(s) This cracks me up because this was Huey yesterday guarding his "hidden" toy. :) |
Omg...I am laughing as I relate to almost "all" of these behaviours. Wallee's favourite thing is throw his ball down the stairs and whine for us to go and get it..lol..My husband says this is Wallee's "stupid human" game...hahaha..Stupid human fetch my ball...lol...He also pushes toys under the couch and whines for us to get them. I remember when he was a pup throwing toys in the garbage cause they fit under the couch. I recently had a friend over who suggested I wedge a pool noodle under my couch. I am tempted to go to the dollar store and pick one up to see if it works..Wouldn't that ruin part of the hiding game??;) |
Wylie used to do this during his first 3 years of life, and it was so freakin' cute...wish he still did it. For us, it seemed like what Wylie wanted was for us to acknowledge what he was doing....so we'd say "it's okay, you can get it, you can chew it" -or- "go get it" - -and then he'd usually go get his bone, carry it around for awhile, and maybe re-hide it, and then we'd do it again...and so on...until finally he'd go ahead and chew it. It was too cute. |
Well tommy takes it to a whole new level with the crying and hiding it is driving me crazy, I swear he has only slept about 5 hours since it begain. Last night I had to deal with it till 2:30 am even after I took them away he was up looking for them or wanted to do zoomies around the house. He woke up at 6:30 am still looking for them. Sad to say today I throw them out do to it was become very unhealth. Plus the new chewy was the merrick beef tender which now he has had diarrhea all over the house!!! |
I am actually calling the vet today die to the lack of sleep, I don't know how he is still up and running in full force |
All my past girls did the same thing, hide, re hide, bury, unbury, rebury toys & bones. My new lil adopted 3 y/o boy does not do this. I miss those days, so cute and funny. I don't know if this is a yorkie thing, my poodles never did those things. Hope things work out for you, loosing sleep is frustrating. |
