Pregnant?

Hi Everyone!

I just joined because I need to get some advice(other than go to vet, I will do that on Friday anyway).

We saw a Yorkie on Craigslist and got her yesterday evening. She is the most wonderful little girl! We love her already.

Here is the issue and question: The prior owner made the statement that Sassy got out of the house and was outside for a few hours. At the time that I talked to her prior owner I was told that Sassy was spayed. Come to find out, when I text her prior owner today, she says she wasnt. I figured this out already as there is no spay scar.

Sassys vulva is swollen, alot more than a normal yorkie and her teats poke out(like pics Ive seen of pregnant pups). Shes not big, but her tummy is firm(hubby mentioned this last night thinking it might be worms but the more I think, the more I dont think it is, and no worms are showing at all). She sleeps alot but she is 6 years old too.

Shes not in heat, Ive seen dogs in heat before and she isnt. With the little info that I can give, is it likely that she is pregnant? I love her and well take care of any little Sassys that come out but would have loved a little prior warning.

We are taking her to the vet on Friday to see if she can tell. Just wondered if anyone could give me an idea. I can get a pic of her tummy if I need to.

Thank you so much for any help you can offer. Its my registered pup, my first CL pup. If she is, there is no telling what the pups will be, other than adorable. She will be immediately spayed either after the babies come as soon as she can or as soon as I find out that she isnt!

There is a possibility that she may be pregnant, but it's hard to tell until she goes to the vet on Friday.

Good luck and keep us posted!

When Kyra was coming in heat her appearance was just as you describe. Before any issue came out to show actual heat there was the swelling in both areas for a few days. So maybe that is what it is.

LunasMomma 07-11-2012 01:40 PM

My Luna had one heat cycle before being spayed and she had the same symptoms, swollen vulva and nipples. Hopefully Sassy is just in heat and you can get her spayed a few weeks after it's over.

Welcome to YT:D!!!!

Lovetodream88 07-11-2012 02:04 PM

If she is pregnant you need to spay her ASAP because it could be a much bigger dog that made her pregnant and that can be very dangerous for her if not kill her.

Teresa Ford 07-11-2012 02:20 PM

Welcome to YT. Please update us after you see the Vet.

bchgirl 07-11-2012 02:22 PM

Place a napkin against her vulva. Do you see blood? She could be going into heat but not actually in heat. You could ask her previous owner if they observed anything as it is possible she is going out of heat...meaning no more blood show.

Her nipples will never be flat against her chest as they remain in spayed females.

If she is pregnant...it is far too early for your vet to tell. A relaxin test can't be done before day 22. This is essentially a pregnancy test. Pups cant be felt by palliation until around day 30 and the same with an ultrasound..

bchgirl 07-11-2012 02:46 PM

One more thing...although I see it advised here all the time, there is a much greater risk spaying a pregnant dog. Their reproductive vessels enlarge and it is harder to tie off, the incision is much larger, and she will likely need to stay overnight.

The risks are all something to discuss with your vet.

IrisheaglesOne 07-11-2012 03:52 PM

Thank you all for your help.

Ill definately update when I find out. I did do the paper towel test and no blood at all, what little liquid there was, was clear.

Thanks again, there is so much information here and Im enjoying it!:)

How can this be done if she is already pregnant? What happens to the unborn pups?

concretegurl 07-11-2012 04:02 PM

My Princess had a spay abortion actually the onky risk was to do it at the correct time and do prespay bloodwork.

The whole blood vessel thing is nonsence thats about a spay while still in heat.

Its done safely all the time. In factthe its oftena the safesttime choice. They aren't born.

bchgirl 07-11-2012 04:17 PM

Once again bowing out of conversations on yt. Good luck to the op.

Ahhh. OK, thank you both. Learn something new everyday. Safety of the mommy pup comes first indeed.

The problem is if she has puppies from a much bigger dog her life is even more at risk. I have heard of many pregnant females being spayed and everything going ok. I think it is something she needs to discuses with her vet.

Deb is absolutely correct about spaying a dog while she is in heat is a much bigger operation than if she is not in heat.

The OP should talk to the vet about the risk for this pup in case she was impregnated by a larger dog.

Personally whether pregnant or just in heat if I were going to have them spayed during either of those times I would seek out a vet who specializes in doing them at that time in their lives.

I don't think there is such a vet out there who specializes in this.
A small dog specialist would be the most one could really look for,

Many vets are very familiar with this procedure and it is specifically taught during their schooling.
Perhaps a vet who volunteers in the spay neuter clinic would be most experienced-however I'd not take my dog to those clinics they are a quantity and not quality stressed event.

chachi 07-12-2012 12:25 AM

Ya know cats and dogs are routinely spayed while pregnant at our spay/neuter clinic. There is a extra charge of a whopping $10 because it is a bit more complicated surgery

gracielove 07-12-2012 01:29 PM

Since the vulva is swollen I would suspect that she has recently been in heat or may just be finishing her cycle. The only way to know for sure if she is pregnant at this point is to have her checked by a vet. You can have her spayed if it is early in the pregnancy. It is easier and safer to do if she is only a few weeks into the pregnancy. You need to find out now. If you wait it is more expensive and much more dangerous to the female..... Or you could have puppies on your hands. Small dogs have more difficulty delivering puppies than bigger dogs do so make sure you are prepared for possible complications if you choose to let her have the pups.

I hope you can help this poor little girl whatever the case may be.:)

MamaZiggy 07-12-2012 02:21 PM

Hope this little one is not pregnant *hoding thumbs*

FoxxysMom 07-12-2012 02:27 PM

Hoping with you that she isn't pregnant. Thumbs up to OP for loving her enough to search out help and join here to ask for help. Welcome and we are praying all goes well with your new baby. You will find a wealth of information, support and help here.
I'm so glad she found you.

IrisheaglesOne 07-12-2012 07:03 PM

Thank you so very much. Im just waiting for tomorrows vet visit. My main concern is that she was mated by a larger dog. If she is pregnant, can the vet determine this?

On another note, I wish people who find homes for pups would tell the next owner the truth about spay/neuter. I wouldnt have cared either way if she was or not, but it would have been better to tell me. The previous owner, at least, told me she got out. Shes shaved down because she was full of burrs(I would have shaved her anyway with this heat outside) and she told me then that she got out for a couple hours.

Shes still "leaking" clear fluid(more like a dog drools-sorry, icky, I know) thats the only way I can describe it. Shes eating and drinking okay, and is a happy girl. Loves attention too!

Thank you again, to everyone who helped! I so hope she isnt pregnant. Id love Yorkie puppies but ONLY if she was bred to a Yorkie daddy, not some random thing off the street. Nothing against other dogs, I love them all, but not for my grandpuppies!

I live in an area that was over populated with coats when I first moved here. The local shelter could not take anymore cats and although I felt bad for these poor creatures I knew if I fed them I would be increasing their ability to reproduce. Anyway, I started taking them to the local low cost spay neuter clinic at a near by shelter. I have to say that vet did some of the best surgeries I have ever seen. Small incisions and quick recoveries. Some of the cats were feral and had to be released rather quickly but all have done very well. They did do some pregnant cats that also recovered very well. There is nothing like experience when it comes to getting things right.
No, I didn't take Gracie there to get her spayed because the program is really for those who cannot afford a vet visit or for population control like I was doing. I can't speak for other programs but the one I take these cats to does first rate work on cats and dogs. That type of program could be an option for people who have no other way to go.

Great news. Hope you have a wonderful weekend too.

concretegurl 07-14-2012 02:46 PM

Great news, not to second guess your vet but, I was told it had to be at least 14 days past a heat to ensure the blood vessels and hormones went back to normal.

We want pics for Sassy too! Can't wait to see her and read some more posts from you, welcome!
