I haven't heard a word from Craigslist. The ad is still there. There aren't any Yorkie Rescues near me and my car isn't fit to travel anywhere. LOL

gracielove 07-10-2012 06:35 AM

I hope it works out for you. I don't know why people put ads like that online and then not even respond to the people who answer. I'm sure you know how to be careful. If you have your heart set on a Yorkie then just wait until you find the right one. Save your money and maybe you can buy one outright.

After my other dog died I had decided not to have another dog. I went several months without a dog and then changed my mind. Once I decided I really wanted another dog it was difficult because I could not find what I wanted right away. I hope a little one shows up for you soon.

It's very frustrating. I am a mess with conflicting emotions. You are all helping me keep my sanity.

Aww hun, I'm pretty sure this one is a scam. I've seen the wording like this before. Someone rehoming one Yorkie, maybe, but two, a boy and a girl. Nah, it's a scam. They are probably fishing for email addresses. In that case, you won't hear anything back from them. You'll just get an email telling you there is 1 million dollars waiting for you in a bank in Nigeria. ;) If they are scamming and do make contact, they will say they are far away and please send money to pay for the puppy to be shipped. Keep us updated.

Yeah, I tend to agree with you, one yorkie sure, two yorkies, it's a scam. Also the wording "very furry"?

Beachdog, you say you have a hold on a dog in a shelter? What's going on with that?

navillusc 07-10-2012 07:13 AM

I would reply if I was interested, but I don't think I would use my regular email account, though. Create yourself a 'new' 'free' gmail, yahoo, aol, hotmail, etc. email account...or since my ISOP allows me to create several email accounts, I might make a new one I could just delete afterward...lol...and reply to the ad. Watch what comes back. Be cautious...all the other things others have said. But, even if it's a scam, if they reply and you get to meet them, etc., you still have the option of reporting the scammer and helping save someone else from a CL scam.

Here's the thread on the shelter dog. Not a Yorkie, and much bigger than Paris was.

That craigslist dog probably sold right away or you asked too many questions & scared the seller off. It may be for the best as I'd be so skeptical, even if I met the person & got the dog, I would expect it to disappear on the way home or something! Like Teresa said, a dog like this would go directly to the vet after purchase & never immediately home with Tibbe and I'd have to isolate it from him and the yard until all the labs came back. I'm so scared of a new dog making him sick, I can only get another dog directly from a trusted breeder or have to go through the above isolation steps.

I would just be too scared to meet someone from craigslist list, even if I had a guy with me. They could follow you & find out where you live and things like that and wait until the guy is no longer around or come back. If you want another little one, keep contacting rescues, A-C, and even trusted breeders around you as breeders come into rescues & dogs from time to time - that is how I got Tibbe. He was dumped on a breeder I know when his actual breeder was getting a divorce & having lots of family troubles. My breeder said she had been told by a friend that Tibbe's breeder had been keeping him and all of her dogs outside, each in his own cage with hardly any attention or exercising or anything! His poor little teeth at age 9 mos. were brown from some type of food he was living on, they had never been brushed or cleaned by even a washcloth & he had retained baby teeth and his breath was terrible. He lost permanent teeth at his first cleaning by my vet plus those baby teeth. He was wild and scared and didn't know what grass or TV or a bathroom were. He would go into the kitchen for a drink of water & somehow wind up standing with one foot in it - more than once! He was thin and my breeder said she'd worked for hours getting mats out of his coat. He ran in circles when you let him out of his pen! He had ear mites and an ear fungal infection but he thankfully had been started on heartworm preventative and had his shots to date but other than that, he'd had little in the way of real care.

So even breeders occasionally get "rescue" dogs. And you won't be dealing with a seller that may be dealing in dogs or worse!

I probably did ask too many questions. LOL But better safe than sorry. Good if I did scare them if it was a scam because maybe they will think about what they are doing. But then probably not, those kind of people are the worst.
Oh well...

How do I find local breeders in Jacksonville Florida?

Oh I see, so you're looking for something that was more like Paris? I'm sorry to say, but it will probably take you some time if you're on a tight budget. I wish you the best of luck in your search, but I really feel like this is a scam.

Be careful with Craigslist. I saw an ad on there last week for yorkies and it said to TM the person. Something told me not to. I googled the phone number and there were many people saying that when you TM this person, they respond with an x-rated picture. Low life.
Also, my son said to be careful because maybe the dogs on there have been stolen.
Good luck in your search for a furbaby. He or she will be very lucky to share their life with you.

beachdog 07-10-2012 08:12 AM

Thanks I will be very careful but no answer so far makes me believe it is a scam. Watching for junk mail.....ha

I started looking for the names of people living in Dallas who bred and showed Yorkshire Terriers & calling them, networked from there. I had to get a Dog Show brochure as a starting place and found one at a pet store. Talked to the Yorkshire Terrier club president and even called a couple of vet offices I trusted. Anyway, reputable breeders are very helpful and will often chat for a time, give you good insights, info on how to find what you are looking for and from there you just keep taking names, numbers and networking.

With the internet, that's pretty easy to do - without it, as when I started out, it can be frustrating at first. I still have my lists of names & numbers from years back.

Here on our site you have access to a lot of breeders listed in the Library and could even start another thread. But after looking for a rescue for over a year, I finally called my breeder & found out about Tibbe when I went to look at some puppies that another breeder had left with her as well as Tibbe & two older females. It was just happenstance as my breeder had had the dogs about a week, vetting, grooming & trying to socialize, settle them some. She hadn't even mentioned them to anyone as needing homes or anything. In my experience in talking with breeders or dog show people, they almost always know a person who has a dog needing a home. I even talked to people in Oklahoma, Colorado & New York! Network through reputable breeders and who knows what may come your way and you won't have to wonder about some unknown craigslist seller.

S.A.F.E. Animal Rescue in St. Augustine says they have 5 Yorkies right now. Have you tried Petfinder.com?
Sounds to me like the shelter dog isn't really what you want. If you can wait and be patient, I'm sure the shelter will get Yorkies in. I went online looking for Lola for a whole year until the right dog came along. I know that's too long to wait, but it sure beats "settling" for a pup that you really didn't want. That's not fair to the dog.
I'd be skeptical of any breeders that only want a few hundred dollars for a Yorkie. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Howdy. I found Bailey on Craigslist. Best $200 I ever spent. Lady said he was full blooded with no papers. I didn't believe her for a minute, but I was curious. She gave me her phone number and we chatted. I was the first caller. I asked her for a couple of hours because she lived about 45 minutes away and I was working. She called me back an hour later and said she'd had 6 calls was I coming. I told her yes and we drove there. The minute she opened the door, bailey was jumping up and down like he knew us. I could tell he wasn't typical yorkie. I think he's either silky or a combo, but who cares. He was the companion we were looking for. I paid her the money and she gave us all his toys, really cute bowls, a bed, and two months worth of flea and tick meds.

We ran him to our vet the next morning since it was so late in the day. The vet said he was roughly 7 months old after looking at his teeth and gums. Bailey had mange, tapeworm and something else (I can't remember). A month of ointments and the boy was happy, healthy and we were so lucky. We've had him now since October 21st, 2011.

The key to Craigslist is to be leery. If they don't respond to your email it's a scam. If they don't give you a phone number to call either in the ad or after you've emailed and replied, it's a scam. If you do talk to the person, ask them questions about the animal. Where they got it, do they have papers, why they selling it, where they got it, who is their vet, etc. If anything sounds suspicious is probably is. If you're ready to go see the animal, definitely take someone. If they give you their address, look it up on google. Make sure it's real and with google maps you can see the surroundings. Even meeting at a public place still bring someone along for safety. If all that pans out, then it's up to you to see if the animal is a fit for you. Does he bark constantly, is he shy, does he look healthy, etc.

Craigslist can be scary, but like anything, if you do your homework good things can come from them. It's certainly a hit or miss. Good luck.
