Yorkies in bed Hi everyone, So, my partner has selfishly left me to go on holiday and it's just me and Dexter at home. I know it's silly, but I feel a little unsafe at night and want to have my Dex near me. At what at age, if at all, did you have your Yorkie (or any other dog) in bed with you? Dexter is 7 months and is toilet trained, but he is only toilet trained to a crate. I worry if I let him up on the bed (which he loves!) he might wee all over the bed in the night  What say you, YorkieTalkers :D |
I had Maddie in bed with me at an early age, don't remember exactly when, but it was before she was 7 months I believe. She was potty trained to go outside so I didnt have to worry about her going in the bed. In you case, that may be an issue. Maybe you can get up a few times to make sure he had the opportunity to go. Once you let him sleep with you, YOU will want him there every night. Nothing like Yorkie snuggles :P |
Jackson was very young. Well he technically started sleeping in my bed at 9 weeks old when I brought him home, LOL... because I placed the crate ON my bed. But probably about 5 weeks later he was in my bed. I let him one night and it was the first night he slept through the night, and the rest is history! |
Kaji was 12 months. The only reason I let him sleep with me was because he was recovering from his neuter. He looked so pitiful and he wouldn't settle down unless he was with me. He's been sleeping with me ever since. :) My only suggestion would be take him to potty right before bed, and immediately when you wake up. If you get up to potty during the night, take him out too. The more opportunities you give them to get it right, the less of a chance there is for them to get it wrong. |

My two have slept with me since they came home. I haven't had any issues with them pottying in bed and I love having them with me :) |
Jada was 2 1/2 years old when we adopted her and she has slept with us since day one. Bogie was 7 months old and he has always slept with us too...neither of them has ever wet the bed. They both have always slept through the night. I couldn't imagine them sleeping somewhere other than with us. |
Mine slept with me from the first. Jilly was 4 1/2 mos. when I got her, Tibbe 9 mos. At first I put them in the little airline carrier right next to me or put it on a chair & pulled it right up beside the bed, so I could put my fingers through the wire door. After a couple days or so - maybe a week, they slept with me in bed sans the carrier. You do feel safer with a dog right next to you nights. |
I've had Ahi in bed with me since the moment I brought her home. She was very little and couldn't get down by herself. So we had a couple of accidents which were all my fault. She woke up but she doesn't make much noise so I didn't catch her in time. Over all I heard that dogs don't normally like to pee/poop where they sleep. She still won't let me know when she has to go potty. She is independent and will just go on her own.(Potty pad) The only time she lets me know is if she got a dingle ball stuck on her bootie and will back up into me. lol :D |
Atticus has slept with us since night one. He will let us know when he wants down and then back up. He has never had an accident in our bed. We all love to snuggle! |
Gracie has slept with me from the first night. I did take precautions like pushing one side of the bed against the wall and putting barriers on the bed to keep her from wandering. When she grew big enough I got her pet steps so she could get herself up and down. If your little guy is pretty well trained and you can keep him from falling it should be OK to have him in the bed. The thing to consider is what are you going to do when your partner is back and your dog wants to continue to sleep in the bed???:confused::confused: |
my hubby started bringing Morgan into bed last week while i was on night shifts and now he sleeps with us every night// he absolutely will not sleep in his crate anymore |
Oliver has slept with us since the first night we brought him home. He slept the whole night...never an accident, we take him out before we go to bed and when hubby gets up in the middle of the night he takes him out, first thing in the morning, out. He snuggles near our heads on the pillows. Lately he sleeps between both our heads...so cute! |
I have 6 little guys. One, Yoshi, my female Japanese Chin (almost 2) won't sleep anywhere but in her crate next to the bed. Sir Yumble, my male Japanese Chin (will be a year August 11) sleeps UNDER the bed. My two Chihuahua's, terrier/x and my Biewer Yorkie, Zachary (will be 5 months on July 7) sleep ON the bed. Gets a little touchy during the night if the 10 year old Chi and 5 year old terrier/x get too close to each other but generally it works out. If the terrier/x, who causes most of the problems, causes trouble, INTO HER CRATE SHE GOES for the rest of the night. I would be lost without my babies in bed with us. I think however, in fact I KNOW my DH would rather they were ALL crated or under the bed....:D:D. Louise :animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |
What a timely post for me! My son is unfortunately sick today with 102 temperature. When my kids are sick, I let them stay with me. Anyway, Lucy's been in my bed since I got her a few weeks ago. She's 5 months. We never had a problem over night. I always took her out just before bedtime and first thing in the morning. But now, she's become a little defiant. She's not always going when we take her out - even tho I know she should be going. So earlier today I walked Lucy a good while after she ate and drank. Nothing happened. I brought her back in and went to my bedroom to check on my son. The 3 of us cozied up on the bed for a little bit. Then, my doorbell rang and I got up to answer - leaving both my babies on the bed. As I talked to a neighbor at the door, my son came running down holding Lucy in the air and saying: "She pee'd on the duvet!!" We brought her right outside, but she apparently finished on my bed. It's the first time she's done that. However, since it hasn't been her first "accident", we're reconsidering our training methods. We going to the crate. I set up the crate in my bedroom next to my bed. Lucy's in there now napping. We'll take her out to eat, drink and play. But when we're not watching, in she goes. Lucy is not pleased. At this point, I don't know what else to do. I think I'll let her back in bed once I feel she understands the rules and goes outside only. Well, good luck to you. Hopefully, you'll have a pee-less transition. Tracey |
