It is helpful to have your dog know the "pee" command when you outside train. It takes a few days for them to get it. When you take her out to potty don't let her wander but take her to the same place each time and say "go potty"(or what ever command you prefer) over and over until she goes. Then take her right inside and reward her greatly. She has to learn that she is outside for one purpose. Going in the same place also places the scent right there that will also help to motivate her to potty. Later after that is well engrained in her mind you can take her for walks after she has done her business. This method worked well with one of our dogs that had been really difficult to train up to that point. It takes a few days before it clicks in their mind but she will get it. It does take some patience on your part. |
Ziggy has been in bed with me since the day I brought him home. He had one or two acccidents (cant remember) but I didn't mind, I think accidents are just the universe's teaching aid, if he never did it, he would probably never know its unacceptable. I just did a firm No, took him to his potty area, then changed the bedding. He hasn't done it since. That small inconvinience was worth having my tiny one snuggle with me |
I brought Charlie home at 6 months he came home in a crate and we placed the crate at the end of the bed and he has used it to get in every night since (to get in bed with us to sleep ) LOL He has complete control too, if he needs more room he tells hubby "move over" and hubby does, he will paw us on the face ever so lightly if he wants under the covers and we lift them up and he goes to the very end of the bed and curls up into a circle. As for going potty, we use the command word for that we will say "Outside?" and we say it like we are asking him a question its the only word we use and if he gets all jumpy and happy we know he has to go, if he has to go in the middle of the nite he will let out a small yip just enough to get my attention. They are so smart :D |
Scooter has been sleeping with me since the day my daughter brought him home to me, he was 12 weeks old then, he is gonna be two years old this month. All 6 of mine sleep with humans in our beds. 5 with me and Molly with my Grand daughter. I would not have it any other way |
My boys slept in my bed with me at 6 months old. They have peed the bed a time or two over the last 6+ years Ive had them... but 99% of the time, they just curl up and sleep all night with me. |
my babies sleep with me since day one. cedric has never had an accident on the bed. lola has twice but not when sleeping. i am not a hundred percent it may have been her marking territory or her being afraid to use the stairs as it was when she first came home. thankfully i was watching and was able to get everything off the bed before it touched my matress. i would just be sure he goes potty prior to sleep. cedric goes on potty pads and has stairs so he just goes when he has to in the night. wishing you luck cause once you snuggle with them its hard to go back to sleeping without them. |
Dinky was about 7 months. I had insisted he sleep in a crate. I even brought it on vacation for him. I discovered in the middle of the night that the air conditioning in the cabin was blowing right on him. I scooped him up and out and put him in bed with me. he loved it and looked so pleased about it... and that was it! |
oh, but when he did pee in the bed, I would pop him back in the crate for at least one or two nights. that was the ONLY thing to do to make him stop that! |
Cozy was 6 months when she started sleeping overnight with me. She did not move from my head the entire night and it is still her favorite place. Lucy, Roxy, and Zoey were probably 3-4 months- I had them from birth and started housebreaking at 4 weeks of age. Cozy would push them out if their bed after feeding them. I was a sap but they never soiled the bed overnight. They were to tired. They slept in a basket in an elevated baby crib with Cozy at first. Cozy would not tolerate sleeping a way from me on the floor crated with her puppies. She would try to jump form the floor to the bed with a puppy in her mouth. The elevated crib was perfect for her. She would feed the babies and then sleep with her mama. All pups stayed in a playpen after being weaned overnight and in an X-pen during the day. They were kept spotless so fabric was never associated as a potty area. Cozy made sure her babies stayed clean. |
Zoe has slept with me every night since I got her at 12 weeks old. The first night I set my alarm and got up every hour to put her out on the patio on her peeped but she didn't pee all night. The second night I extended it to every2 hours and still nothing so then I went to 4 hours and she still didn't pee during the night so I stopped setting my alarm. She is now 6 months old and on the rare occasion that she has to pee during the night she will walk on top of me until I wake up and take her out. She isn't fully trained during the day and still has accidents but has never peed in the bed. In fact I used to put her out first thing in the morning and she would just lay back down on the patio and fall back asleep so now when I get up she sits on my lap until she is fully awake and will start to wiggle and then I know she is awake enough to go pee. She is like her momma and has a very hard time waking up in the mornings. |

Maci has slept with me since I brought her home at 4.5 months. She does great in the kennel though too during the few nights she has stayed at my parents house when only my Dad is home. When I first brought her home I could tell she would really have to go out as soon as I woke up, but now if I sleep in she will start walking on me if she is ready to go out. The one accident she had was kind of my fault. She already knew "go potty" and "do you need to go outside?" and instead of asking if she was ready to go out, I asked "do you need to go potty?" Big mistake! She did have to go and she went all over a pillow. I've never again replaced outside with potty :) and now I miss my cuddly Maci any night she hasn't been with me to sleep with me. |
