Zachary Got Stuck We had quite a scare today. Zachary is 19 weeks, his best buddy, Sir Yumble, a Japanese Chin who will be a year old on August 11, play together for hours. Today, they were playing and I heard Zachary bark a strange bark I had not heard before. Because of health problems and medication side effects, I sit in my recliner a lot with my feet up. I am always very careful to make sure none of the kids are laying underneath before putting my feet down (I count to be sure I see 6 little heads). Somehow Zachary got under the chair and caught in the metal part underneath. He did NOT have his collar on!!!!! He only wears it when we take him outside. But he could not get out. He was caught. I had to get out of the chair before we could get him out but I couldn't get out till HE was out. If I lowered the foot part, he would be crushed. My husband could not get him out. Finally, by putting a kitchen chair under the foot rest, I was able to, with much struggling, get out of the chair. Then we were able to get him out. What is frightening is that if Zachary had not cried that unusual cry and Sir Yumble had not acted worried, I could have KILLED HIM!!! He is so little, a tad over 4 pounds. If my husband had not been there......another potential deadly disaster. Now I am scared to use the recliner. I have also learned that my decision to NOT use his collar in the house was a good one. The collar could have gotten caught and strangled him. We have to be so careful and anticipate everything that MIGHT happen. To think that a freak accident could have killed my sweet baby.......OMG......! It is like having a toddler at the age of almost 65! Be careful my friends. Anticipate the unexpected with your babies. I could be in mourning right now but thank god, I was spared that. A shaken, Louise |

omg , i am so glad your little one did not get hurt. that is so scary. we have recliners also and that is my worst nightmare. thank goodness zachary had an angel watching over him...... |
I had a patient admitted last year....he had a coplete mental melt down...he had just lost his wife and buried her 2 weeks before...married something like 56-58 years....he was sitting in his recliner with his little Yorkie...the two of them was all they had left....both in mourning over the lost wife...the little dog wanted down...he put him down, and watcxhed him go to the kitchen to get some water...he did not see him come back...he put the recliner down to go check on the little dog, and he caught him under the recliner and killed him....decapitated the poor little dog...the poor man went absolutely crazy ....I dont know that he ever got over it...we had to put him on the psych ward....and I dont know where he went from there....but I will never forget that poor man...he could not get that out of his minds eye... |
I'm so glad you realized he was in there! Recliners are death traps to puppies and kittens. Even human kids have been killed in them. It sounds like you really need to use yours. It's a good thing you are so aware of the issue. |

Could you use a chair with an ottoman instead? OMG I would be so shaken and so thankful to have Zachary come out unscathed  |
OMG that is scary...My dad uses a recliner but luckily my Yorkie would rather be on top with him than down under it! I wonder, could you use a pillow or something to block him...and maybe a bit of repellent like bitter apple on the pillow to train your dogs to NOT go under there....I think they also have "scat mats" to stop cats from going on beds...maybe something like that could be placed under your recliner to stop him and your other dog from going under the recliner at all... Good luck! |
I know we have a recliner, usually Razzle is up on it with me "when" I use it. But I heard a similar and thankfully non lethal story a couple of years ago; and I 've been diligent and very careful when I use it; but...... I am so happy Louise your hubby was home to help, and that your pup suffered no ill effects. We too do not use collars in the house of any kind. I came home for lunch one day (when I just had Magic) and it was a fluke I did, just decided to do it, and I cancelled the dog walker, cause I was coming home. Drove up the drivveway and I am hearing the most unusal and loud sound from Magic; I'm thinking what gives? I rush in the door, go to his crate and his collar had gotten hooked into a side piece of the wire crate(which shouldn't have been sticking out but was)! He almost choked to death, he was all scrunched up trying to remain standing, but pulling an pulling to try to free himself. NEVER AGAIN. But back to the recliner. I think now, that I won't use it all, until Razzle is in his crate for bedtime. Then I know he is not around and can't get caught!. |
Zachary definatley had an angel watching over him. I'm so glad your husband was there to help you out. I will be more aware, thank you for this post, as I also have a recliner. |
