My poor baby!!! I must start out by saying that I am sure you are sick of hearing about mishaps and scares from me ...all in the past two weeks!!! Believe me, I realize that I must sound like the worst furbaby mom in the world or either a complete lunatic that all of this has happened. But I actually am an extremely conscientious owner, and my nerves are just about completely and totally frazzled after the past two weeks..and I think tonight officially does it!! Today after lunch with my dad, my sister's family and I went to my dad's house. After lunch, I went by my house and picked up my dogs to spend the rest of the day with me. Well...long story short, at my dad's, my niece was fishing... and I'm leaving lots out .. but she was getting ready to fish and accidentally dropped the hook she was baiting with a huge piece of raw bacon..... I immediately grabbed my dog as he was chomped at bacon... I immediately pried open his mouth to grab the hook ..but I couldn't get it bc it was taking one hand to hold the line which was still attached to the rod in my nieces hand.. I was terrified she would move and accidentally "set" the hook...my other hand was keeping his mouth open in hopes I could still prevent him from chewing and then swallowing the bacon wrapped hook. I ran ..literally ran to car to go to ER at LSU vet school... I could only pray that the hook was somehow still in the back or very top of throat.. I didn't take time to investigate.. I was terrified it might block his breathing or cut his esophagus of stomach..anyway...got there and x ray showed the hook already to his stomach!! He had to have anesthesiologist come in.. be put under.. They were going to first try to retrieve it endoscopically.. and if they couldn't get it out... proceed to cutting his abdomen. Also, they mentioned the possibility that his stomach could have a hole...obviously that would be a big problem...but they didn't think it was. Thankfully, about an hour and a half into his procedure... the vet student came out with a little cup with the fish hook..line and sinker! I have NEVER been so happy to see a fish hook!! They were able to get it out, and so far they see no preforation to his stomach. However, he is in ICU for the night. I so hope everything continue to progress smoothly the rest of tonight so that he can be back here with me. I really miss him, and I am so happy he has been so so fortunate! I'm also thankful to have LSU vet school here! |
 OMG thank God you took immediate action. These little stinkers are so quick & it's just often impossible to prevent these kinds of accidents. I'm glad they didn't have any trouble retrieving the hook & with any luck he has no other problems resulting from the hook & will be back home with you in no time. |
Fish hooks and dogs do not mix well....I NEVER let my dogs around ANY type of fishing gear, or people fishing! I can promise you, either the pup or YOU is going to get hung up on a fish hook! You were very fortunate with this latest incident....I can certainly understand frazzled nerves! |
Omg:eek::eek::eek: I am so glad you acted so fast!! And, like you said you were close to a great er!!! Well....I will put that on my list of fears...do NOT let my pups near fishing:eek: I would never have though it was so dangerous, maybe because my dh useds worns:eek: and that is not as tempting as bacon. :confused:The point is you were doing your best and besides gray hair  and an expensive vet visit it will be ok. |
I am SO happy to hear that it sounds like your baby will be okay! We'll keep sending positive energy your way. I've never heard of anyone using bacon for fishing before-that's a new one. I'm new to the forums, so I don't know a lot about you and lil ones, but once this whole ordeal is over, a refresher of obedience might be in order-stay and leave it can be pretty tricky commands, especially when it's something like bacon, but it couldn't hurt to refresh those incase something sticky happens again |
OMG!! How terrifying that was for you. Glad, so far, all is going well. |
Thanks to everyone for kind words and support! I also would NEVER allow my tiny dogs down by people fishing much less children... Is essentially a disaster waiting to happen!!! In my original post I said I left alot out and I did. I said I couldn't take her bc I had dogs w me and an adult offered to watch the dogs. I went over to pleeeeez not let them outside.. I had already taken them out to potty and they'd be fine for 15 minutes. Long story short it was about two minutes before I heard the back door shut and someone jumping in pool... Imagine my surprise when I hear voices behind us and it is who volunteered and agreed to watch the dogs!! Anyway, for lack of space I will leave out all details but everything happened in a flash... I had been working w my dog all day on touch command w kids to alleviate his fear of other people and work on teaching him people were. Safe and not scary!! Well when she had dropped hook and bacon she dropped to ground to pick it up and did but had it in her open hand which is also touch command... And we had been doing touch and then rewarding w treat so I know that my baby thought he hit the goldmine w his treat in this particular "touch"! Unfortunately it's exactly what I had been teaching him to do w them all day!! It's certainly not my niece's fault, and it was an accident bc she wasn't trying to give it to him... However, I would NEVER even for fifteen or five minutes have gone out there if I had for one second thought that my dogs wouldn't be watched!!!!! I was so angry I was crying! He is my baby, and I would do anything to protect him.., had anyone said hey we can't watch him, I could have driven him home... Gotten the kennel out of the car etc etc.... I didn't put them in the kennel bc people were n den sitting watching tv and holding and playing w them... So I genuinely thought everything would be ok for fifteen minutes. ** Because I am more than a little hyper aware about my furbabies and the many possibilities of what could happen in a mere second. Everyone thought I was so over the top when I realized they were out but I don't think they think that any more. * Yes!!! While typing vet just called and my baby is doing wonderfully!!! I am leaving now to go see him!! *Sorry for all venting this was just horrific!! I knew of all the possible complications and it's scary to not know! Plus I didn't know if he was in pain when this happened. We were a good thirty minutes from LSU, but let's just say I made it in a whole lot less than that last night!!! Hoping he can come home w me!!! Between all in past two weeks.... Regular vet made fairly large mistake w vaccines on my smallest dog.. She as a result, was extremely sick for almost a week...The hawk and snake sitings all within days... And now this... I am more than a little frazzled!! |
Oh my goodness! I would have been horrified seeing that in action! Glad your baby is doing okay now! |
wow sounds like you have been thru the ringer...i hope that he gets to come home with you and things slow down a bit for you to relax. |
You and your little ones have been through alot i hope things calm down for you now |
Bless your heart, you have had a very stressful couple of weeks!! We know you would never have let your pup get near anything like that on purpose. Unfortunately, accidents will happen, no matter how careful we are. |
Phew ! You are one unlucky lady on one hand and one blessed lady in the other. No what I mean ? Your nerves must be jangling just now. I think I would be headed for the funny farm about now. Great to hear there's no real harm done to your furbutt. Not sure your bank balance will be in such good shape though. :/ |
i know you were stressed.. i dont know i could have done as well as you! i sure hope he gets to come home! |
Wow, that's scary! I'm glad he's alright! |
that's why they call it an "accident"...I am sure you were beside yourself..don't beat yourself up. Stressed out? that's an understatement. I feel for you, sooooo glad vet was able to get it out. Give that little pup a belly rub from us while she is recouping and for you have a glass of wine.:D Susan, Annie and Sydney |
Accidents do happen, don't be too hard on yourself! Just be thankful your baby is okay! |
I would have to agree that bacon and fish hooks are not a good combination to have a dog around. That is quite a surgery your baby went though. He is going to have some recovery period. Hope he has a speedy healing process. I never took Gracie many places when she was a puppy because she could just about give me a coronary without leaving the house! |
[QUOTE=bijoux1;3949738]Thanks to everyone for kind words and support!o I alsowould NEVER allow my tiny dogs down by people fishing much less children... Is essentially a disaster waiting to happen!!! In my original post I said I left alot out and I did. I said I couldn't take her bc I had dogs w me and an adult offered to watch the dogs. I went over to pleeeeez not let them outside.. Imagine my surprise when I hear voices behind us and it is who volunteered and agreed to watch the dogs!! Ok..First of all, realized I had a typo in last very long post:eek: I meant to say that I would never have intentionally allowed my tiny dogs to be around people fishing much less children fishing.... I was NOT trying to say that I would never allow children to be around my dog!! I am SO HAPPY to say that Bentley is doing phenomenal!! Last night they were able to remove it successfully endoscopically..so he never had to be cut!! They kept him in ICU to watch for any possible signs of perforation...but he is doing great!! The vet laughed and said unlike me, my dog probably really never knew the difference... thankfully he never felt any pain whatsoever....other than the iv and obviusly being a little nervous bc he knew something was definitely wrong with his quite frazzled momma:) Apparently, it was a great thing that the hook was wrapped with so much bacon...The bacon covered the hook so the hook probably never touched anything on it's way to his stomach, and it's probably what helped prevent his esophagus or stomach from being preforated. I told my niece she is officially great at baiting hooks:D I really do appreciate the kind words... as I know you know it is just the worst feeling in the world when anything happens to our dogs!! I just felt so guilty bc regardless I am responsible to protect them. I'm just soooo thankful that this turned out as well as it did!!! Also, I am quite blessed in the fact that I had considered insurance canceled it during the first few days, and then two weeks ago added insurance with a new company! This is obviously considered an emergency..so the almost $1,000 ( all charges not in yet) ...might be up to $1500-$2000...but thankfully I will only have a percentage.... as I am keeping the insurance this time:D Again thank you everybody:):):) |
Yikes!! MORE THAN SCARY!! Maybe I SHOULD sign up for the pet insurance after all.... Louise |
Oh and lol regarding the many questions I've gotten about why bacon on the hook.... I don't have a clue..... the kids just fish in the lake... and they usually throw the fish back (usually really small )...My dad just has them use whatever luncheon meat on the hook that he has in the fridge. He must have been out of luncheon meat..bc he had told her she could fish with his raw bacon:) I also, before yesterday, didn't know that bacon worked for fishing lol. |
I literally just found a great company that had wonderful reviews... and I signed everybody up...but I was trying to weigh the options and if it would make sense for them bc they are all so young. But I'm so glad that I had signed them up!! It has saved me in this instance!!:D I will still have my 20% which is still alot, but it's soooo much better than what it would have cost!! |
I'm so glad he didn't have to have surgery! It is amazing that they would even attempt to remove a hook endoscopically! It must be they could tell the hook was totally wrapped in the bacon otherwise it certainly would have been too dangerous to even attempt. He must be quite a bacon lover! |
I'm sooo glad your baby is going to be ok....frazzeled you say...i'd be in the icu by now suffering from heart failure, or at 1001 Queen! ok breathe, chill, have a glass of wine, put your feet up. remember breathe..... |
LOL...good advice... and especially the part about stopping to breathe:) So now that I have stopped to take a deep breath...now I need to go work on the glass of wine part of your advice:D |
good girl! keep breathing.... |
As far as the bacon..they said that would stay with him.. the vet laughed and said he certainly deserved to keep it after all of this:D I don't know if his body started to break down the bacon to digest it once it got to his stomach... thinking that is why....bc once hook showed up on x ray it was just the hook and his tummy had alot of food.. which made getting it a bit more challenging. The anesthesiologist came in and went ahead and put him under to proceed with trying through endoscopy..and had it not worked .. he was already under and they would have just proceeded to cut him open for removal. I also didn't know that a bare hook could be retrieved endoscopically. I was terrified something would touch ...but it definitely worked:D |
Am still breathing and probably breathing a little easier now that sitting here with my glass of wine on my own couch with all of my babies safe and sound!!! :D:D |

Thanks everybody for your support and kind words!!! Bentley is doing really good, and he hasn't seemed to have been phased in the least by any of this!:) I am glad that he never was in any pain and thankfully it all went as well as it did!! I initially wasn't going to post yet another mishap...but well we have been dealing with it all day so here goes... We were having some pretty severe issues with his skin so he began seeing the dermatology specialist at the same clinic about two months ago,and he has made such a drastic improvement. He has been on only one RX food...nothing else.. Well, by mistake, he was not given his proper food in the ICU recovery.( they had his records, and I gave the info on his admit etc, it was just overlooked accidentally).. and he has literally scratched all night and all day and huge clumps of hair are all over the house.... he had just been weened off of all of his medicine and he was doing so good!! And with him being off of his medication it was going to allow us to see if it was truly a food allergy. I'm not sure if he will have to start over on his medicine regimen or what.. I realize this is hardly the end of her world.. however, this has been over two months that he has been seeing them... I have been so strict with controlling his food... no treats..using the caned food version of the food for treats, etc... and I have been obsessive about weaning his medication so that we would know if it was the medication or the food etc that was working.....and it is a LONG process.... I just hate the thought of having to start all over!!! uggggg... He is scheduled to see the dermatologist again, and I'm calling in the morning to move his appointment up bc his reaction is sooo severe!! To be fair, he also did of course have the slice of raw bacon. But, ugggg, I just want everything to settle down for a little while!! |
OMG! I am just seeing this!:eek: How scary for you!!! I am so glad you had quick reactions and got your baby help!! Poor thing! It does seem like when it rains it pours. Hope all settles down for you. :) |
