Accidents do happen, don't be too hard on yourself! Just be thankful your baby is okay! |
I would have to agree that bacon and fish hooks are not a good combination to have a dog around. That is quite a surgery your baby went though. He is going to have some recovery period. Hope he has a speedy healing process. I never took Gracie many places when she was a puppy because she could just about give me a coronary without leaving the house! |
[QUOTE=bijoux1;3949738]Thanks to everyone for kind words and support!o I alsowould NEVER allow my tiny dogs down by people fishing much less children... Is essentially a disaster waiting to happen!!! In my original post I said I left alot out and I did. I said I couldn't take her bc I had dogs w me and an adult offered to watch the dogs. I went over to pleeeeez not let them outside.. I had already taken them out to potty and they'd be fine for 15 minutes. Long story short it was about two minutes before I heard the back door shut and someone jumping in pool... Imagine my surprise when I hear voices behind us and it is who volunteered and agreed to watch the dogs!! Ok..First of all, realized I had a typo in last very long post:eek: I meant to say that I would never have intentionally allowed my tiny dogs to be around people fishing much less children fishing.... I was NOT trying to say that I would never allow children to be around my dog!! I am SO HAPPY to say that Bentley is doing phenomenal!! Last night they were able to remove it successfully endoscopically..so he never had to be cut!! They kept him in ICU to watch for any possible signs of perforation...but he is doing great!! The vet laughed and said unlike me, my dog probably really never knew the difference... thankfully he never felt any pain whatsoever....other than the iv and obviusly being a little nervous bc he knew something was definitely wrong with his quite frazzled momma:) Apparently, it was a great thing that the hook was wrapped with so much bacon...The bacon covered the hook so the hook probably never touched anything on it's way to his stomach, and it's probably what helped prevent his esophagus or stomach from being preforated. I told my niece she is officially great at baiting hooks:D I really do appreciate the kind words... as I know you know it is just the worst feeling in the world when anything happens to our dogs!! I just felt so guilty bc regardless I am responsible to protect them. I'm just soooo thankful that this turned out as well as it did!!! Also, I am quite blessed in the fact that I had considered insurance canceled it during the first few days, and then two weeks ago added insurance with a new company! This is obviously considered an emergency..so the almost $1,000 ( all charges not in yet) ...might be up to $1500-$2000...but thankfully I will only have a percentage.... as I am keeping the insurance this time:D Again thank you everybody:):):) |
Yikes!! MORE THAN SCARY!! Maybe I SHOULD sign up for the pet insurance after all.... Louise |
Oh and lol regarding the many questions I've gotten about why bacon on the hook.... I don't have a clue..... the kids just fish in the lake... and they usually throw the fish back (usually really small )...My dad just has them use whatever luncheon meat on the hook that he has in the fridge. He must have been out of luncheon meat..bc he had told her she could fish with his raw bacon:) I also, before yesterday, didn't know that bacon worked for fishing lol. |
I literally just found a great company that had wonderful reviews... and I signed everybody up...but I was trying to weigh the options and if it would make sense for them bc they are all so young. But I'm so glad that I had signed them up!! It has saved me in this instance!!:D I will still have my 20% which is still alot, but it's soooo much better than what it would have cost!! |
I'm so glad he didn't have to have surgery! It is amazing that they would even attempt to remove a hook endoscopically! It must be they could tell the hook was totally wrapped in the bacon otherwise it certainly would have been too dangerous to even attempt. He must be quite a bacon lover! |
I'm sooo glad your baby is going to be ok....frazzeled you say...i'd be in the icu by now suffering from heart failure, or at 1001 Queen! ok breathe, chill, have a glass of wine, put your feet up. remember breathe..... |
LOL...good advice... and especially the part about stopping to breathe:) So now that I have stopped to take a deep breath...now I need to go work on the glass of wine part of your advice:D |
good girl! keep breathing.... |
As far as the bacon..they said that would stay with him.. the vet laughed and said he certainly deserved to keep it after all of this:D I don't know if his body started to break down the bacon to digest it once it got to his stomach... thinking that is why....bc once hook showed up on x ray it was just the hook and his tummy had alot of food.. which made getting it a bit more challenging. The anesthesiologist came in and went ahead and put him under to proceed with trying through endoscopy..and had it not worked .. he was already under and they would have just proceeded to cut him open for removal. I also didn't know that a bare hook could be retrieved endoscopically. I was terrified something would touch ...but it definitely worked:D |
Am still breathing and probably breathing a little easier now that sitting here with my glass of wine on my own couch with all of my babies safe and sound!!! :D:D |

Thanks everybody for your support and kind words!!! Bentley is doing really good, and he hasn't seemed to have been phased in the least by any of this!:) I am glad that he never was in any pain and thankfully it all went as well as it did!! I initially wasn't going to post yet another mishap...but well we have been dealing with it all day so here goes... We were having some pretty severe issues with his skin so he began seeing the dermatology specialist at the same clinic about two months ago,and he has made such a drastic improvement. He has been on only one RX food...nothing else.. Well, by mistake, he was not given his proper food in the ICU recovery.( they had his records, and I gave the info on his admit etc, it was just overlooked accidentally).. and he has literally scratched all night and all day and huge clumps of hair are all over the house.... he had just been weened off of all of his medicine and he was doing so good!! And with him being off of his medication it was going to allow us to see if it was truly a food allergy. I'm not sure if he will have to start over on his medicine regimen or what.. I realize this is hardly the end of her world.. however, this has been over two months that he has been seeing them... I have been so strict with controlling his food... no treats..using the caned food version of the food for treats, etc... and I have been obsessive about weaning his medication so that we would know if it was the medication or the food etc that was working.....and it is a LONG process.... I just hate the thought of having to start all over!!! uggggg... He is scheduled to see the dermatologist again, and I'm calling in the morning to move his appointment up bc his reaction is sooo severe!! To be fair, he also did of course have the slice of raw bacon. But, ugggg, I just want everything to settle down for a little while!! |
OMG! I am just seeing this!:eek: How scary for you!!! I am so glad you had quick reactions and got your baby help!! Poor thing! It does seem like when it rains it pours. Hope all settles down for you. :) |
