Seizures? Hi! Just found this message board. I am mom of 4 yorkies. Our little Laci has had 2 seizures (that we have witnessed) First one on Mother's Day and 2nd one last Tues. Took her to the vet after the 1st one, vet said to monitor her and gave me some Valium to give her if she had another one. Said that possibly could be the only one she ever has. Well...she had another one last wk, lasted 3-4 min, called vet and said Valium would keep her from having another one that evening. I took her in the next morn and vet did blood work (which was ok) yay! And started her on phenobarbital. Will reck blood again in 2 wks. So far seems to be working :) Just wondering if anyone else's yorkie has seizures and how treatment is going. Thanks for listening!!! |
Google liver shunt. Hypoglycemia. Epilepsy. All cause seizures. Its very hard to tell them apart but with tests your vet can narrow it down. I'm sorry your baby had them. mine had them and it ended up hypoglycemia. He was tiny and his little body couldn't regulate blood sugar levels. Very treatable and he out grew them. It's very scary but keep positive. :) |
Mine has epilepsy and is on meds and is doing well. Hope your little one does well on the phenobarbital and it stops the seizures. |
Praying for your little one. |
My Max was on phenobarbital for almost 2 years and did incredibly well! Your baby will take some time to adjust to the meds and the meds may take some time to level out. Good luck to you! |
Thank you for the kind words :animal36 |
How old is this pup ? Has the vet mentioned an MRI ? |
No...she is 5 |
Aww bless....my Missy has them too and is on PB,she is doing well on this, but Im now concerned as Ive found out it can cause liver problems,so I shall ask my vet when I next see them.....saying that with regular blood checks it should be ok,reg monitering is essential,so I hope Im worrying over nothing so to speak. Good luck with your baby Im sure he'll be fine x |

Treating seizures without a proper diagnosis is a very bad decision. Get your puppy to another vet. Seizures happen for a reason. Several have already been mentioned. |
In my prayers. Louise |
Seizures I have a 5 year old Yorkie, who has had seizures most of her life. We have done every test possible and the vets did not know how to treat her other than the phenobarbital. They said she was really too little to take that safely. A few months ago, I took her back to the vet and they called a specialist in Oklahoma City, who said that Keppra (used for humans) can now be prescribed to dogs. It is a miracle drug. She acts like a totally normal dog. I am not afraid to leave her alone, now. I just wanted to share this information. We have to have it compounded at a pharmacy in Conway, Arkansas and mailed to us. I wish someone would have shared this with me. If anyone wants more information, just respond and I will tell you the details. |
