I have Trupanion and have been so thankful I have it. What I pay out yearly I have got back doubled in reimbursement checks. Because I started her with it so young everything is covered, including hereditary and congenital issues.

Best decision I have ever made:) My worry about having a savings account is getting it built up after dipping into it is because it wouldn't take long to drain it after something scary happened.

I just got Truffles insured with pet plan for just "Peace of mind" also started saving account for her emergency :) on a side.

The vet said it was rare because the girls should be old enough to fight that off (3 yrs/Tia 2 yrs). The divorce and move in January could have been a strain on them, but I think they are so comfortable in their new surroundings. The new vet noticed Tia's LP, which doesn't bother her. Now, I'm worried that she will have problems and need surgery. A lady at the vet said she uses VPI and loves it. I always thought pet insurance was useless. I've looked at some, but I can't find one that might cover her LP, if surgery is needed down the road. Pre-existing conditions, hereditary, & LP are some of the major things that are not covered. Anyone have good pet insurance that might be helpful if the need arises?

I've had VPI for almost 3 years now (believe I took the Superior Plan). No issues to report with reimbursements on vet visits, meds, etc. The vet submits claim online and I usually receive a check within 2-3 weeks.

We have all four of ours insured too. We have them under PetSecure here in Canada. They've been great and when our Shayla had liver shunt they paid for most of her surgery. I will continue to keep my girls on the insurance because I feel secure that if anything happens they will all be covered no matter what the cost.

We dont have insurance on either of our dogs. There have been a few expensive vet visits. The worst was rattlesnake bites, $1800ish. Roli was only 6 months old and had not been to snake school yet. But unless you live far out in the sticks like us you should be able to get by with just a puppy savings account.

Sandysbabies 05-22-2012 07:22 PM

We don't carry insurance on them either. Personally, I had rather set aside money for them each week and then when the time comes we have it. It has come in handy several times and I was very glad we decided to do that.

I would recommend pet insurance. within two months my pet insurance paid off. Try Tripurian. not sure of the spelling but this insurance will not let you down. You own a Yorkie you need pet insurance.

MikaTallulah 05-22-2012 08:27 PM

I put money aside every month for my fur butts at least $200. Most of the time it is more. The insurance premiums would be less than that each month. The account keeps growing as time goes on and the money is there if I ever need quick cash- Something I could never have with an insurance plan.

Teegy 05-23-2012 06:50 AM

My trupanion coverage stated heredity and congenital as well as patella surgery would not be covered. I had the insurance from the day I got Teegy, isn't that odd

RileyDC 05-23-2012 07:47 AM

I had Trupanion and they kept upping the yearly premium....by a lot.... even though they say they don't do that. It was supposedly due to vet costs in my area... I don't even take Ry to a vet in my area.
And, they didn't cover any of the Exam fees. I was out a lot of my just in exam fees when Riley had ear issues, last year.

I have pet insurance and would definitely be broke without it. The issue with yours would be the fact that there is a pre-existing condition.

I made some fatal changes to my insurance and if someone was getting a new dog with no pre-existing conditions here is my advice:

Get the best insurance you can afford when the pup is little and healthy. You can always down-grade. Keep a low deductible, again if you change it you can't go back. I'm kicking myself for doing that. Also do your research!

Harley is only 2.5 and I'm my insurance companies worst client, I claim EVERYTHING. Harley had some major issues last summer and through the winter and I've used up my GI coverage, almost all my allergy coverage, plenty of medication coverage, massage and therapy, dental, and also one accident. I would never have been able to make it through Harley's allergies, LP and IBD without it. I'd be lost without it.

If you're considering it see if you can find a company that will forgive a pre-existing condition if you don't make a claim on it for two years, if her LP isn't bugging her now you may be able to get the insurance and claim on it later in her life if it gets worse.

Teegy 05-23-2012 07:55 AM

I'm with Riley on this one through and through, same thing happened with Teegy, they increased the premiums so much per month I had no choice but to get a deductible to keep my personal expense down.
Then you end up between the deductible and the uncovered things, with a rebate of piddles.
The money I would have saved over two years of putting it into a bank account would more than safely covered the cost of the vet bills I've encountered this year.
so it's the route I'm taking and would recommend. Teegy had no pre-existing conditions either and I got it when I got him.
They base the rates on where you live which makes no sense to me at all. Perhaps I should to the highlands

LoALAnna 05-25-2012 03:06 PM

I was wondering about Pet Assure. It is not really "insurance" in the usual sense, but a discount on treatment at the vet, actually 25% off. It is supposed to cover all vet visits, treatment in house, etc., but will not pay for meds or other "take home" treatments. The premiums don't seem terribly high, but I'd like some feedback from anyone who might have the PA plan.

I'm getting my little girl on June 5th, I will be getting a health certificate from the breeder, then I will be taking her to vet within 72 hours for my breeders requirement for her guarantee on her. Those that say they have a credit card for their dogs, I was thinking, if something huge would come up and would need surgery, and unless the credit card could be paid off in full, you would then be paying the high interest rate and payments on the credit card, and what if something else would happen and you still didn't have the credit card paid off yet...Should I get insurance now so the usual 14 waiting days would be over by the time I get her, or should I wait until I actually have her then get it...its only about a week away now.

Insurance or No Insurance

Hi my little girl Gidget is almost 5 months and just now going out side due to the Parvo scare.
I did have one scare to where I had to take her to an emergany vet. the cost was almost 200.00 and the Insurance subtracted the cost for a normal office visit and my 50.00 deductible.
My puppy had an instentional infection. Cost for testing and IV and special food all covered.

If you have a medical record from your breeder and a report from your vet then the Insurance will cover your puppy with no limitations. At least Tripurian. Personally I would not own a Yorkie with out Insurance especially if you have a FM and plan to breed her. C Section for a FM Yorkie is 3,000 and higher. I recommend you do your home work and talk with different breeders and pet owners. So much could go wrong.

I love my little girl and don't want anything to happen to her.
