Does anyone have a Yorkie and still go to the gym in the am? I will be getting my baby boy in a few days. I usually work out at the gym (which is a 3 min drive from my house) from 6-7am, dress for work by 8:30, at my desk by 9am (my job is 10 blocks from home). Now that my little Marley is coming, I plan to start walking him in the morning (after his vet shots-can't have my baby catching anything from these neighborhood dogs, lol) Like I said, I want to feed and walk him every morning. So....when do I work out? I would hate for him to hear me putting on my gym clothes/shoes, and the leaving him without feeding him or taking him out 1st thing in the morning. But I also don't want to feed/walk him at like 5:30am, THEN go work out, THEN come back home and dress for work. I hope this all makes sense, lol. I feel like I am babbling....anybody work out in the am? What is your routine? This is all new for me and I have to lose this weight. p.s- If I have to, I can feed/walk him before the gym, although it seems backwards. Sincerely, New Nervous Mommy:confused: |
Oh my gosh, my life totally changed when I got Romeo (and I now work out at home)! I used to spend 1 hr at the gym every morning but since I got Romeo I refused to leave him alone (overprotective mom) and therefore I gave him the bad habit of having me around 24/7. I work from home so I have the advantage of sneaking in a workout during the day instead. I keep dumbells under my desk -- will use when on telecons if I do not have to present -- and I have a treadmill in the basement. Even then I find it tough to work out as I'd much rather be in the gym with the right "atmosphere". |
I've changed my workout routine since I've gotten Tatiana. These days for exercise, I walk her, and do exercise DVD's or Netflix instant play from home. For toning exercises, I do free weights from home. |
Loving My Yorkie. I free feed Luci she has food down all the time. When I go to the gym in the am. she is still sleeping. When I get home it is play time for us and she loves it. Plus she get's a treat. Has been working for us. they adapt very well. Good Luck.:p |
I think you're going to have to walk him before the gym... I cannot imagine a puppy holding it all night and then hearing you get up without a walk to go potty. Do you have a fenced yard, or do you have to walk him? I work out after work... I come home from work, let the dogs out to go potty and then work out... Things change once a puppy is added :) |
We work out at home in the mornings. We have a treadmill and a ab machine. The yorkies are usually in the room with us. Chachi used to hide because he needs to lose a little weight so we put him on the treadmill also but he has gotten used to it now and doesnt hide anymore. My Husband has lost about 60 lbs. Hes very dilligent and has been dieting also. I have only lost a couple pounds and I need to lose about 15 |
Can I ask how long you plan to leave him alone while at work? I just ask because sense he is younger then 12 weeks when you get him if he is not feed every couple of hours her could experience hypoglycemia and if no one is around it could kill him. There is a higher chance or hypoglycemia when they are younger then 12 weeks. You probably need to take him potty at least before you go to the gym small and young pups cant hold it for to long. |
Can you come home at lunch to walk him? Let him wake up and let him out to potty. Go to gym, come home and do the walk then. If you can walk him at lunch then the morning walk doesn't have to be long. Odds are he'll go back to sleep when you leave for work. If he will potty without a walk, you can even do the walk at anytime of the day. Will he be a baby baby? How do you plan to train him if you are gone all day? When Maggie was a baby I took her out after every nap and about 15 minutes after she ate or drank. Babies need to eat more often and I think I had her on breakfast lunch dinner schedule. It was like having an infant. If I worked full time I would have taken vacation time those first few weeks, maybe had hubby take some time if I couldn't take enough. Luckily I was home and she trained easily. Sorry to say that it doesn't sound like you planned this out.....Puppies are a lot of work. Also, you could move your workouts to the evening...... |

OOOPPPS! HERE IT IS!!! I used to walk every morning "BD" (Before Dogs!)..now, I just do stationary bike, rowing machine, and exercise DVD (Sweating to the Oldies!)...we also have a Wii and bowl and play tennis every night! |
all I can say is you can get great exercise walking him twice a day. Just remember a puppy can't be left too long without proper food and water, I'd say give up the gym for the first month or so until you get him in a routine, it's a small sacrifice I get up an hour and a half earlier than I used to in the mornings in order to spend time with the boys. I am fortunate enough to work for a pilates company who offer lunch staff classes and it's a 45 minute walk from home. That is where I get my extra exercise (not so much in winter). I now thanks to the dogs get even more exercise than before |
EVERYTHING will change for you, once you've got your Littlie :aimeeyork ;) Life as we know it doesn't exist any more....especially when they're tiny. All the feeds, training, potty-training, checking their blood-sugar levels aren't going down....it's like having a little new-born skin baby that relies on you TOTALLY. In time you will work out your own, new schedule - in the meantime, I'd just enjoy your new baby, and let life take it's course :) I hope you love every moment....Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
What's a gym?:p lol just kidding! ;) I think you will have to first see what HIS potty schedule is like. Esp. when they are puppies they are just like babies. When you gotta go...you gotta go. So give him a few weeks and you will know what his routine is like. Since he won't be going out for walks until his vacc. shots are all done, potty pad training him is a must. You can start using commands(like go potty/wee wee) and when he goes praise him. My Ahi can usually go on command now. I use it before we go in a car ride to ensure no accidents. She goes both indoor and out. After a while i'm sure you could just take him out first thing in the morning just to go potty. Do your normal routine. Come back for lunch and walk him and potty break. Make sure you get a x-pen type of setup when you are not home. Good luck! :) |

Thank you for your feedback....I have planned this out very well, I plan on knowing that nothing goes as planned! I have taken time off to be with Marley, and get to know his personality, what he likes. I have no problem working around him with certain things. My gym, job, etc are all really close. At this point it's just a matter of adjusting to him being in the mix. I wrote the thread to get feedback on what other people do just to get some ideas. But I also have exercise videos at home if need be, or I may just use our walk time as a morning workout....who knows. To me its not that major, just wanted ideas. And between my working only blocks away, my boss allowing me to bring Marley to work, and my aunt BEGGING me to let him come over during the day, I do believe we have it all together as much as possible....but the most important piece has not yet arrived so I can only plan but so much. Maybe he will be a serious sleeper and so I can sneak out in the am for a quick gym workout....maybe he wont:) I just cant wait to love him. |
Thank you all for your feedback....For those who asked: when I am not home, Marley will have a nice size x-pen, complete with his toys, water, and a small crate to feel safe in. This is all located in my sunroon with many windows. I feel so peaceful when I go out there, I'm sure he will too. I will also leave the tv on low for him. I have many neighbors who are home during the day, who love to do things in the backyard, etc so atleast he can hear all the juicy gossip of the day while I am working:) Thanks for your concern:) |
I rather not ask them to walk him, I will come home and do so. Kinda over protective already:) |

Omg, I agree with the others, my life changed when I got Ziggy. and now my work out is walking/jogging with him daily. Before his shots were done I took to working out at home during his naps!lol. I dont have any advice except to say: you and marley will find a way and a routin that works out for your life. Things will change, but they will also work themselves out. You'll see when you get your baby:) |

Marley will rarely be home for more than a few hours, I work really close to my home, and my Aunt will be puppy sittting as well. But thank you, I have been reading up on hypoglycemia...I know it's a biggie for yorkies. |

A little puppy is not going to require a lot of walking at first but there is a lot of time that is needed to put into a puppy especially in the morning. The "accidents" need to be cleaned up and possibly a few washings of the behind. Not to mention the changing of the bedding and it goes on and on. I agree that some at home work outs may be called for here. You may not know it yet but you are about to have a baby! That is a big life change! |

I go to the gym 4 days a week. Sami uses potty pads and I leave food out, although she doesn't really eat it while I am gone. I walk her or take her outside or to the park later in the day depending on what we have going on for the day. |
I've always worked out from home, i have a DVD collection and workout equipment in the basement. I have to block her off though because when she sees me jumping around she thinks it's a game and gets all riled up lol, a yorkie jumping on your belly when you're doing crunches is not fun:p. |
GeorgiesMomma I will definitely post them soon:) Thanks Sami_girl, I may leave some food out and head to the gym. And Candigirl, that sounds like so much fun!! I can't wait until Marley does that:p |
I don't think you said on this thread, how old the puppy is, or what type of place do you live in, if you are downtown in highrise it's different than in the suburbs in house with a yard. I live in the suburbs in a home, so what I don't might not be the same for you. I go to the gym in the morning and did when Lola is a puppy. We get up, I have some coffee and get dressed and since her food is down if she is hungry she eats and drinks while I am getting ready. Now that she is a year and well housebroken she does not seem in hurry to go out to potty, so the last thing I do before I go to the gym, is harness her up and take her out in the yard on a leash to go potty, I spend a little more time on days I go to the gym waling her around hoping she will poop as well as pee, normally she does. When I get home I let her out again, and then I take a shower, some days I work from home and some days I go on appointments. But IMHO having a puppy since you work and work out so close to home should not have to make you turn your life upside down. on thing you should plan for if you are going to train her to go outside is to allow for plenty of time, because often it is maddening if they just keep sniffing and sniffing and not going, so you might have to get up earlier or cut your workout time down if you need to be a work at a set time. Lola was 4 months when I got her and I have always free fed my dogs so I never get worked up or worried about feeding schedules. I also will tell you, that if you are used to getting a good workout at the gym walking your puppy and even your adult dog will not replace that. I still walk Lola, sometimes twice a day, around lunch time and then in the evening, she walks fast so we get some exercise but we always see to run into someone wanting to chat, or Lola wanting to sniff. I am trying to break her of sniffing and marking, so we often walk in the middle of the street which is a distance from the grass, and again depending on your neighborhood that is not always possible. good luck, welcome to yt and can't wait to see pictures. |

I'm skeptical about leaving food down for two reasons...1. It will have wet food mixed in and I know that draws ants, bacteria, etc....and 2. I fear I wont know exactly how much he is eating. (do you only leave dry food down?) I wanted to put food down in the morning, then take him out. Come back at Lunch, and I am usually home by 4:30pm. So if they free feed do they just always go on the pee pads instead of outside? I plan on pee pad and outside training. Thought putting food down at certain times would help that. Does Lola free eat and go on the pee pad when she needs to? |
