Just wanted to say Hello! Hello, I don't currently own a yorkie but I've always wanted one. In the meantime I thought I'd do a little research. I hope to find a sweet little girl soon and have a couple of inquiries out there but I'm in no rush and believe that I'll find her when the time is right. I'm also new to North Carolina, 90 days now and loving it so far. I do have one question that I didn't see posted, how are these little guys with water, lakes etc. We had a maltese :( and (still have) a Great Dane (he just turned 7) they love(d) the water & fishing & laying in their little baby pool. Thanks Mary |
Welcome to YT:D You have come to a great place with a ton of information. We love our Yorkies here;) Georgie isn't much of a fan of the water but there are a lot of people that have Yorkies that love it:) |
Welcome to YT and you have certainly started off on the right foot, in the right direction! Do your research on both the breed as well as the breeder. You should be looking very carefully for a breeder....find your breeder FIRST, one that is honest, and compassionate, and clearly responsible for her breeding program, one you can TRUST....vital, vital!.... and then you know you will have a wonderful, HEALTHY little girl for many years, and your breeder will be right there with you for the life of the baby!!!! You will learn what defines a "responsible breeder" in your books.... I always like to recommend two books for people that have never been owned by a Yorkie...these books are must haves and cover every aspect of owning a Yorkie that a new owner could possibly need to know! "Yorkies for Dummies" is the first one...."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second one! Get your books and start reading, flagging and highlighting all information that you feel you need to research more or have questions about....you can then either research your questions on the internet, you can post your questions on here, or you can save them and ask the breeder you eventually choose.....any or all of the above! This forum is packed with people that are so knowledgeable on so many areas of loving and living with a Yorkie....you can get professional answers from people that have been working, loving, grooming, owning, training, showing and breeding Yorkies for many, many years, and we are always excited to help our new members on any level! We are passionate about our breed, our babies, so occasionally we may get a little over-enthusiastic with our guidance....just know it is given from the heart and meant to keep you on the right path! So, let your research begin!! And welcome!! |
Welcome to YT. |
Hello and welcome to YT.. |
Welcome you are so smart to get as much information as you can before you purchase your yorkie. |
Welcome to YT. I agree 100 % with what Yorkiemom1 said. As a trainer I believe starting off with good training on day one. It is so much easier to train your puppy once, rather than correct bad behavior. So I would like to recommend my favorite books (well just 3 for now :) ) Dog Dilemmas by Gary R.Sampson DMV, Dog Perfect by Sarah Hodgson, and 1000 Best dog training secrets by Robyn Achey & Bill Gorton We are so happy you found us ! |
I'll add one of my favorite books as well 'Head to Tail Yorkies' it's the essential care guide by Sandra Lemire |
welcome to yt! its good that you are doing research before getting your baby:) |
Welcome to yt. My yorkies like the water. We live on a lake and also have a small pool for them. Hope you find the perfect pup |

The more gregarious yorkies are probably more likely to have fun in the water, especially if they are around it from the time they are puppies. A shy and nervous yorkie would be more likely to be nervous around water. IMO.:) |
Welcome!! Just to answer...My first (born) yorkie Bevo is my little man!! He rides in the boat, jetskis, rides the tube, swims in the lake and pool with me... they are all different,,,, but that the Beev!!! |
You have started your Yorkie Library!! These are all excellent books that will be needed for reference throughout your involvement with Yorkies, for all the years to come! You KNOW you are in trouble when you think you dont need books for reference, because you already KNOW every thing they have to say....!!! |
Welcome to YT! Our Katie Scarlett is only so so with water, but I think it's because all she has gotten into so far is baths. But this summer we are going to try out a small puppy pool and maybe a visit to the creek...with a life jacket of course. :) We will see how she likes it. |
