Is it normal for my yorkie to be so ugly to everyone other than our family? Hi. Our yorkie is one years old he is a great dog, was easy to potty train he sleeps in bed with us, and does what he wants most of the day. Which is normally sleeping on the back of the couch. :p Ok so the problems we are having is this. 1) anytime anyone comes near him other than myself, hubby or our four year old daughter, he will bark and act as if he is going to bite them. Which at this point he hasnt bitten because we dont allow him close to anyone but I think he might actually bite someone. When we have people over we have to put him in the kennel in our bedroom which he barks the entire time but we have not other choice. If I hold him he just keeps barking and snarling at people. Is this normal yorkie behaviour? Is there anything I can do to help him get over this? He does get shakey and upset when we are getting ready to leave the house but he just gets in his kennel without being told. He stays in his kennel when we leave the house. 2) He barks alot. Not sure why... He barks if we are playing with our Daughter. Like if she starts laughing loud or something he barks like a mad man. Thanks for any thoughts. :aimeeyork |
Here is another thread with similar issues you might want to look at. There are also a lot of threads to help with barking. There are also plenty of knowledgeable people that can offer you suggestions. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ing-doooo.html As far as barking I can't help Georgie barks and barks until someone pays attention to him and then he is fine. I like to think of it as him talking to us:) He isn't a fan of strangers or kids other than his skin brother who is 4 either so I can relate. Good luck! |
I agree with GeorgiesMomma. Tatiana is a one-person dog. She is very loving and affectionate with me, but with no one else. She's sort of stand-offish with my husband (even though he adores her to pieces). Although Tatiana is not as hostile with other people as your yorkie, I can tell she doesn't care for other people. She is only warm and sweet with me. |
I'm not knowledgable, but I do believe all dogs can be trained, or untrained from behaving in certain ways. There are some amazing youtube videos out there. I think teaching them that you are their pack leader can be very powerful, but not all pet owners want to be a pack leader. I'm lucky in that Ellington is very easy going. He only barks in his sleep! Although he prefers me, he will happily sit with strangers. I take him on the train, to pubs and cafes, on the bus etc. |
It sounds as though he may not have had the early socialization that yorkies so badly need. I would start working with him and get a trainer to help you deal with this behavior. He will have a miserable life stuck in the bedroom and so will you. I would really advise you to seriously retrain him. He will have a happy life if he is good and polite company. |
We have our very own excellent "resident trainer" on YT....hopefully, she is scouring posts today and will be responding! |
