Is he bloodthirsty? 1 Attachment(s) My baby, 9lb Baxter, keeps bringing me prezies. Baby bunnies. The tinniest sweetest little things. He has brought me 3 in the last 24 hours. I don't SEE him eating them. These 3 he hasn't eaten them or gnawed on them at all. Now my cat, on the other hand, WILL eat them. At any rate, the hubs is worried. He says he remembers, when he was a kid, having to put down the family dog because he got the taste of blood and would kill animals. He is worried that Baxter is now bloodthirsty. What do you all think? Is he bloodthirsty? My theory was he was playing with them, and killed them. BUT. I do see that they bear a striking resemblance to one of his stuff-less toys, that he gnaws, chews, tugs, shakes around. |
Aw hes a cute little bunny killer. Yorkies were originally used to hunt rats so its not out of their nature to hunt small prey |
He was just doing what he was bred to do. I don't think you will need to sleep with one eye open or anything like that, but I wouldn't get a pet bunny if I were you.;) |

Lol, "bloodthirsty?" No, he's just being an animal. They were bred to be ratters, so anything small that runs is game to them. Jackson goes after bunnies a lot, though I've never seen him actually catch one. He did kill a bird though. :\ |
My niece had a guinea pig and if given the chance Georgie would have been blood thirsty too! Although the guinea pig weighed more than him;) Your sweet boy Baxter is adorable and I don't think he has any issues. I am however sorry for those poor Bunnies that befriend him;) |
Nah he is just doing what he was bred to do its just bunnies instead of rats. |
This is all perfectly normal. Mine will kill mice, birds, or whatever and none of them ever attacked anything other than prey that they were bred to hunt. Remember they were bred to hunt mice. |
Can't tell you have many bunnies have died in our yard. Right now there is a baby bunny in our from yard and all three sit in the window watching and shaking. If they could get him they would :( Only thing with bunnies is they carry diseases and worms. Fleas too! Makes sure to use Flea and Tick treatment as well as a broad spectrum Heartworm prevention. Heartguard will only protect for heartworms. I've used Sentinel which included a flea prevention and intestinal parasite prevention as well. Pebbles had hookworms from killing a rabbit and she was very sick. They are not easily detected and can live for a long time in the intestines. My vet relayed a story about another dog that was always sick and they could not figure out what the issue was until he actually passed one. Once treated the problems when away. He told me that now when he hears that a dog had killed a rabbit he treats for the parasite because of this incident. |

Levi likes to catch and play with garden snakes. Which, didn't bother me in the least because I hate snakes. One day I brought him in from the run and he proceeded to drop the snake he had in his mouth...in my living room:eek: thank god for sons . I think squirrels and bunnies wouldn't stand a chance either. |
I agree with what others have said... He's only doing what he was bred to do. I would worry if he were a larger dog, but it's not like he's going to go kill a child because he got ahold of a bunny. My husband had a husky growing up and he got loose once and killed a farmer's entire herd of sheep. They were chasing them, and then bit and went crazy. The dog had to be put to sleep and their house insurance had to cover the cost of a ton of sheep. This is more of a problem with larger animals that can do more damage... Don't think a yorkie can do much damage. |
