Can I get some advice on whining and crying at night? We just brought Lola home Tuesday night so she is very new to being without her brother. Her first night at home she cried for a few minutes after being put to bed (she has a bed, crate with door open, food/water, snuggle piggie, kong, etc. with her) in the bathroom on heated floors so she stays warm. It was over in no time and we all went to sleep peacefully. Last night was a different story! She cried, whined, howled (if you can call it that) and generally fussed all night long. I do mean all night long! I didn't sleep for more than an hour at a stretch. Any advice as to what I can try tonight? I really don't want to start her sleeping with us because I'd be "aware" of her all night long and worried that she wasn't covered up, she'd get rolled over on and so forth. :( |

The dog knows you are there and they feel secure. All my dogs sleep like this and they love it |

My oscar did the crying thing too when i brought him home but he got used to it and now he loves his little crate. |
Yorkies need their people... My two sleep in bed with me, so I have no advice on the crate sleeping situation. One thing I would advise is to make sure she's worn out before she goes to bed. Make sure to wear her out with walks and playtime so she will want to sleep when it's bed time :) |
You received some great advice. Personally, I would like to add another tip. Do you have an exercise pen (that's open on the top)? If yes, I suggest you set-up that exercise pen with the doggie bed INSIDE it. Have this set-up NEXT to your bedside (with the doggie bed inside ALIGNED with your pillow). I hope I make sense. I have this set-up for Tatiana for bedtime. Because the exercise pen is open on top, she knows when we're all in bed. Her bed is next to ours (within her exercise pen). The best part is if she needs comforting, all I need to do is roll over in bed, reach down, and pet her. She immediately relaxes. Also, I keep a potty tray inside the exercise pen. On occasion, she potties on the tray in the middle of the night. Incidentally, Tatiana like this arrangement. She takes herself to bed (around 8:30p every night). When we go to bed, we simply close the exercise pen. Of course, when I get up in the morning, I open the exercise pen (oftentimes, she's still sleeping). Sorry for the long post. Hope this helps. |
All post are good advise. I have none since mine sleep with me now. When they were young I did do the crate in my room, when they would start whinning I would stick my hand on the gate and talk to them. Let them sniff me and know someone is still here. Tiring her out before bed always works too. Mine,if they dont get enough exercise beforewe go to bed they want to play house as I call it when we go to bed. |
You got some good advice and tips that will work. Just remember it is normal for them to cry, whine, bark, or fuss for about 5 days when they first have to sleep alone. I teach that crate training is important. There will be times your dog has to be in one. While traveling, over night stays at the Vet. If a disaster happens, like a flood, hurricane, fire etc.. Shelters that allow pets, require them to be crated. If they are trained as a puppy to think of their crate as a safe resting place, it will be much less stress for them. My Yorkies often nap in their crate (we rarely close the door, and only do so when it is for their safety.) |
Thank you all for the advice! I admit to putting Lola in the bed with us for two nights  The only reasons I didn't want her in our bed in the first place was fear that we would smush her in the middle of the night and the fact that (as another poster pointed out) she needs to be comfortable sleeping in her crate if there ever comes a time when she has to be in it. After the first two nights though she seems to have figured out that she is safe and she has slept in her bed with her snuggle piggie and we haven't had anymore problems! I did take advantage of the advice I got here about tiring her out before bed, that helped a lot and I don't know why I didn't think of it (I did that with my children when they were little, lol). Thanks again, I don't know what I would do without this site! |

Sorry, my two sleep with us too! Never thought Hubby would agree and even build steps for them! We get in bed at nite and many of times he says, I can't believe we are sleeping with two dogs! Lol!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
I've also been curious about this, for when the time comes. I'll definitely be putting the crate in the room with me at night |
I would move her crate to where she can see you. The first few weeks are hard and I know with Callie I got very little sleep. The best thing to do though is if you have taken her potty then just let her cry and she will eventually stop but if you talk to her and take her out she is going to learn that whining will get her taken out. If she wakes up and starts crying take her potty and then put her back. She misses her litter mates and mommy so don't lock her in a room all alone. |

I could have written this myself! except now most times they sleep with me! Great advice, all the advice on here is spot on, they need to be in room with you! |
Remember that dogs are pack animals and tend to sleep in groups so this is scary for her. When I baby sit past puppies, I put a soft sided crate on a table next to my bed an then I can comfort them and they seem to be pretty content with that. Could you do something like that? I know it must be tough for lite sleepers who if awoken have a hard time getting back to sleep.... |
