hyper all the time... Hi my lil one is 6 months old, shes been a little ball of energy since i first got her,i love her to death , but she keeps on growing and growing and as she gets bigger she gets more energetic, i'd say shes about 7 lbs now... she now goes for 2 walks a day.. which tire me out! lol i throw a ball for fetch for an hour down a long hall the length of the house and i play about an hour of tug-a-war with her too, and she still dosen't seem to get tired. I heard getting spayed might make them less hyper, but will age make her less hyper?... its just hard when some days i don't have time to take her for her 2nd walk or something..if she dosen't get her 2 walks, fetch and tugawar, she won't sleep til about 2am and no she dosen't sleep much during the day, she sometimes just relaxes on the pillow by the stairs..or maybe a little 30 min nap around supper time...and shes awake around 7:30 am every morning!! i was thinking maybe a brother or sister yorkie for her might help?..i know shes still a puppy.. but was just looking for others to share thier stories..if your puppy was hyper then mellowed out as they got older? ..after they got spayed? or if getting them a playmate helped? |
They do get calmer with age, Another yorkie to keep her occupied is a good idea |
Shes just a pup still so she has puppy energy. I would get her spayed though and shes coming up on that age but I don't know that, that will make her have less energy. I think shes just being a pup. |
oh shes deff getting spayed the end of this month:).. its funny as i was typing this she did one of her hyper runs.. its where she gets so full of energy she runs in crazy circles all over the house until shes panting..hahah she makes me laugh. at least ii'm getting more exercise now that i have her ahaha i never walked so much in my life! maybe i'll be in shape this summer lol |
My boy is is 8 months old and 7 pounds & he has more energy than i know what to do with, lol. Yes , another dog to play with make a big difference. He has a shih tzu sister to wrestle with ... |
Sounds like puppy energy to me,,enjoy. |
I have the same situation going on here. Scarlett is FULL of energy...she plays and plays, lots of fetch and tug-of-war going on here. She is smart and lively and I love it! We have a 12 year old Golden here that she wrestles with, and that does help some. She will be spayed within the next couple of months, she is 6 months old now. I would LOVE to get her a sister but there aren't many yorkies where I live, we will see what happens.... :) |

I know how you feel. Max is very hyper as well and requires a lot of exercise right now. I have noticed that he gets tuckered out when I add an activity that is not on the normal schedule (e.g. trip to the pet store, pet park, bath, etc.). If it is feasible to get another pet then that may help; however, if you are feeling frustrated by one, you may be in for double the trouble!! LOL!!! ;) I have big dogs and we have "play time" in our office. I get to play on yorkie talk and Max gets out some energy. You are a dedicated and good mommy for going the extra mile for your furbaby. Give it some time and I'm sure she will chill out. Do you give her Bully Sticks? |
yes i give her bully sticks, she gets bored after a bit though, and i am constantly trying to find things to entertain her, she gets new toys every week lol and i get creative by tying shoelaces to things and tying toys together, i dig through my closet find her scarves and things to play with..i'm not frustrated with her, i just feel bad because i know she gets so bored sometimes, she has more energy than she knows what to do with.. maybe getting her a sister or brother if she dosen't mellow out by age 1 might be a good idea..because shes tiring me out! LOL.. she gets so much exercise so i don't know where she finds all the energy |

I was told with my beagle that with age he would get calmer... he is 13 now and still as hyper as ever... even our vet is amazed by his energy. Its a case by case basis... I mean 7 months is still really young so you never know. |
Yep gotta love this puppy time! :) I have noticed that our Katie Scarlett is not quite as wild since her spay but she definitely still loves to be mischievous! ;) |
My dog trainer reacons too much protein in their diet makes them hyper she advises a change of diet to 18% for an adult dog 28 for a puppy. I dont know if this is right cause in the wilf they would eat all protein surely. Anyway she said shehas dealt with dogs with behavioural issues anf she finds a change of diet works wonders. |
My dad's little dog is 4 years old and is still hyper as ever. When you were talking about her hyper runs it made me think of him he will run that same path around the table into the living room and jump on the couch. He does this at full speed about 20 times in a row crack me up every time |
She sounds like a typical puppy. You are lucky she lets you sleep in until 7:30! lol. Mine are awake by 5 or 6 and ready to eat. She will calm as she ages, and I think a friend might help. |

and maybe i'll look into changing her diet..she gets spayed on the 29th of this month so that may help..and if not i guess she will be getting a little brother or sister this winter hehe! |
Bella will be 2 next month and I thought she would never calm down. Walking her and playing for hours fetching did nothing to play her out. We found she was obsessive with her game of fetch so we stopped doing it on a scheduled time as she was smart enough to know that right after she ate in the morning was when we would play nonstop fetch for her. Now we still do it but not every day and not at the same time. She still goes for her walks every day. It is amazing the change in her in the last 3 weeks. It is like she grew up over night. Now she is happy laying beside me on the sofa, takes her naps in the afternoon and now has decided she would rather sleep in her crate rather than with me in bed. I do miss the bed part....but I am getting more rest...I have also left her for up to 2.5 hours in the house alone and no messes when I come home. She seems to really like her crate more now and when I come back she is usually laying on her pillow napping or sometimes on the sofa.....I never thought she was going to grow up and now that she is I am missing the puppy stage.....just a little...lol. I was wondering at what age your pups matured ...was it around 2 |
Zoey was the same. I couldn't even use the computer - she sat and barked at me. I would stop and go outside and play ball. Finally, at 10 months old I found her a recuse maltese boy. He was about 1 1/2 years old and they get along great. It really helped and I didn't feel guilty when leaving her home alone. She is definitely the boss around here and he is just happy to have a nice home and a doggie friend. |
Roxy is my wild child yorkie. She is go-go-go all day. She goes for 5 mile walks with Buddy the golden. Then will come home and play fetch for an hour. Sometimes with Buddy sometimes not. If she is playing fetch with Buddy she will chase after the ball with him- Get to the ball before him and then bark til he picks it up and run after him back to me. Each throw comes an acre of land. If you don't play with her she will throw her toy down the stairs and then chase it. She is a high energy-ADHD yorkie. She will roughy house with her mother and younger sister both bigger than her- She wears the other Yorkies out. She will also play torture the cats- Sneaks up on then and jumps, pull/nips their tails, bark til they run then chase, etc. She is only 4 pounds and both cats are over 15 pounds so can't harm them. She will also bring her toys to you, drop them on your lap, the run to the other side of the room and bark at you to throw it. Spaying did not slow her down for even a full day. I picked her up at 3:30 in the afternoon, at 9pm she was looking to play, and she escaped her playpen by 9 am the next morning. Needless to say she did not stay quiet for the 2 weeks as recommended. |

I am guilty of always looking for the future and wanting more out of my little guy. First, it was the potty training and now I am hoping he will calm down and learn more obedience. In the grand scheme of things, I need to just appreciate how he is now and know that my efforts (and maturity) will eventually create change. He is a great little guy and I love him to death but you reminded me to enjoy him as he is. Thanks!!:D |
