Coconut Oil Just wondering if any of you here feed your furkids coconut oil? I've been reading on it a lot the past two nights, I never knew all the things it was good for! Gracie my boxer is having some issues with allergies and I went out today and got some organic virgin coconut oil. I started her out on 1/4 of a teaspoon and will work our way up to 2 tablespoons daily. So, anyone feed this to your lil ones, or use it on their fur? If so, what has been your experience? |

Hi Tracy, I give my clan coconut oil, but only about once a week after baths and grooming. They love to lick it off a teaspoon, and sometimes I put a little on them topically if their skin looks dry. I do think it helps their skin and coat look better. I think too much makes their coats look oily, but that's just my opinion. |

I put it in my hair and it makes it soft |

I feed it to mine twice a day and use it on their coats and any wounds... I would tell you what I think it has helped with but I would be laughed off the forum! |

So 3 years ago I put all my dogs on coconut oil... just too many benefits to list... but one, in humans, is that it is believed to dissolve kidney stones. I realize that it is a hugh leap to calcification of the cornea, but why not? Anyway, I swear the cloudiness is reduced, where by rights after this amount of time he should be totally blind. Then there's Tinkerbell, the failed Liver Shunt Surgery dog. Her problem ended up being sludge in the Gall Bladder and she took meds to correct that. The vet said she would always produce bladder stones, and would need surgeries for the rest of her life to remove them. Also on her Ultrasound, two vets identified kidney stones. I doubled her dose of coconut oil immediately. No kidney issues were found during her LS surgery, and it's been a year now since then and she has yet to show any signs of having bladder stones. Is this all the result of the coconut oil? I have no idea. But I will never stop giving it to them. |

Ottawa Valley Dog Whisperer: COCONUT OIL IS GOOD FOR YOUR DOG'S HEALTH A friend of mine sent me this article after I told her that I was going to get coconut oil for my girls. Like everything there is a right way and a wrong way, I found this article very helpful so I thought I would share. I can't believe that I never heard of this sooner! |

I understand what you mean but you most certainly would not be "laughed off the forum" by me...lol Coconut oil has been given a huge, undeserved, bad rap...and I'll stop there. lol I eat it, cook with it, recommend it...and feed it to my animals as well as use it topically on all of us. Brody and Mia absolutely love it!!! :D |

I've been buying, using and suggesting cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil for several years now. I use it in both human and dog meals. I buy it on-line from Tropical Traditions. Coconut Oil - Certified Organic Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil from Tropical Traditions |

I have read good things about coconut oil but have never used it. Where do you buy yours and do any of your dogs NOT like it? I have the pickiest of all dogs as far as what she will consume and have to disguise the supplement that I am presently giving her in raw meat. |

Peek A Boo, 15.5 yo, weighs 7 pounds and gets 3/4 + teaspoons twice daily, mixed in with his food. Sapphire, 5 yo, is 8 pounds and gets a teaspoon in her food twice a day. Finny, 4 yo, weighs about 12 pounds and gets 1.5 teaspoons in with her food twice a day. At one point I gave Peek A Boo more, but his skin got oily so I cut his dose back some till his skin no longer felt oily. I warm their food a bit and the coconut oil melts into it. Coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid... most other oils are long chain fatty acids, so the body digests them differently. Coconut oil will not cause pancreatitis, it actually helps the pancreas and can help level out blood glucose levels. Peek a Boo had two bouts of pancreatitis when he was 6 years old.... none since. I started mine on a 1/4 teaspoon twice a day and built up from there. It allowed them to get used to the taste... now they won't eat their food without it. |
