Hello, everyone! I'm new to the forum. :) My name is Stevi, I'm from Arkansas. I'm getting married in August, I'm so excited! :) Me and my fiance are in a motorcycle club, A-State Boys. We have a Golden Retriever/Rottweiler mix named Loki that is 10 months old. He has such a personality! And I just brought home a Yorkie a little over a week ago! His name is Ryder and he's 11 weeks. If you have any new Yorkie parent tips, please tip me up! Lol. Our vet said that we were wasting our time with house training until Ryder was about 4 months. Is this true? |

Well i know frome experience that some yorkies can have an issue with housetraining but you certainly are not wasting your time to start training him now. Are you pad training or outside training? The outside can be more difficult if you will be away for the but it certainly can be done. There are lots of people who have experience with this very subject so you will get lots of helpful advice. Good luck to ya |

Thank you! We are doing both, outside and puppy pads. That's how we trained our Goldren Retreiver/Rottweiler. However, Ryder isn't using the puppy pads very well, any suggestions on that? He stays in a huge kennel during the day, and doesn't have many accidents. But, he'll pee 10 minutes after I take him outside, even if he pees twice outside. Is that normal? I don't remember our other dog doing that. I mean, he peed a lot of course, but he'd go outside and not have accidents if we took him on a regular basis. |
I agree with your vet especially if you are going to take major steps in housebreaking. Some people tether the dog to them, while others crate train letting their dog out every hour or so. I kind of let Joey train himself, he was in a large x-pen during the day with several pee pads and his bed and food and water. When he was out of the pen, both eyes were on him and at the first sign of sniffing and circling, I'd place him on a pee pad. We kept him in a small crate at night and took him out every few hours and placed him on a pad. I think the biggest mistake people make is allowing the pup to have too much freedom too soon. I’m a little concerned because you’re bigger dog since he’s still a puppy, might play to rough with the Yorkies, do you keep them separated? We have had many sad stories here, and not every big dog is good with Yorkies, but some are great. |
We're doing both, puppy pads and outside. That's how we trained Loki. However, I don't remember Loki having as many accidents as Ryder when he was a puppy. We take Ryder out about every 15-20 minutes and he goes but will still have accidents in between. Is this normal? |

We let him play in the living room. He usually stays close, he doesn't like to be where he can't see us. And during the day, he stays in a kennel. I feel mean making him stay in a kennel except to play for a little bit and pee. I like to let him roam around. We did the same with Loki, just took awhile. I figure if we're consistant with Ryder, it should be the same way... |

That helps a lot. He uses the puppy pad sometimes, but not all the time. Guess we need to inforce that more. I think he'll be a somewhat easy dog to train. My fiance and I are all about training very well.. We want them to listen. Loki is super smart! And Ryder has already started sitting down for treats. :) |
Hi there and welcome, congrats on your yorkie and your upcoming wedding. |
Thank you so much! |
Little dogs have little bladders. Sometimes it seems they have to pee a lot. A puppy does not have full control of it's bladder until a while after it's 16th week so a lot of training is just teaching them what you expect of them. They can't really hold back the urine when they are quite young. I don't know why your vet would say what he did. It would be silly not to start training you puppy until it was 4 months old. Maybe he was just referring to the fact that they don't have much control when they are young. Being consistent is usually the key. Congratulation on your new little pet. Is he going to go riding with you? It seems like with a name like Ryder he must be going somewhere! |
We started ours on the pads immediately and they have done great. I will say though Kyra if she has peed on it more than 2 times insists we change the pad before she will go again lol picky little queen she is. |
good advice already given... just wanted to say :welcome4: |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. |
I believe he would have a heartattack if we took him on the bike! Lol. But, that was one reason we came up with that name is because we ride. :) Thank you all so much for the house-training tips! He hasn't been using the pads very well, I don't know why. I tried putting them where he likes to go, and he picks another spot. Lol. He will go outside every time we take him, so that part is going well. I just don't know if it's too confusing for him to do both or what?? He doesn't have too many accidents, and I'm sure he'll grow out of it! Our other dog did! I think it took us about 4 months to train Loki. Hopefully Ryder will be about the same. |

There really is no comparison when training big dogs and little dogs. I do believe in starting house training as soon as you bring them home and I also believe, from my own experience, that the training pays off in a big way. They pick up on it sooner, but it does depend on your being consistent. Good luck and welcome to YT.:) |
Wanted to say welcome to yt! I'm a new(er) yorkie owner too and am still learning but we got our girl at 12 weeks and started potty training right away. It was hit and miss there for a bit but she caught on quickly. We used the potty training puppy apartment and it worked wonders for us. |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Hi Stevi, I see Nancy has you all set now. I thought I'd welcome you to Yorkie Talk again. :) We were out this afternoon and am now just getting back on. I see you have had some good sound advise on wee wee pad training. The pads were our best friend. It did seem to take Calleigh awhile to learn what to do. She was doing other commands just fine too. She would sit and give paw, but just didn't want to use the pads all of the time. I made the mistake of giving her a treat [her kibble food] when she went on them. She still looks at me to give her a treat, and she is almost five.. You must love little Ryder so much already. Just be patient and he will learn what he is supposed to be doing. Good Luck. |
They sell a liquid house training aid that has a hormone that is supposed to attract puppies to the place where you want them to go. Most puppy pee pads are supposed to already have this on them but some seem to work better than others. You might want to try getting some to put on your pee pads just to get his nose working a little better so he gets the idea of what those pads are for. And of course get him right on the pad as soon as he looks like he is about to do something. The attractant can be used outside also. Pick one area where you want him to go and take him to that spot every time. Having a command like "go potty" or what ever helps also. As soon as he goes reward him and take him right inside. Some puppies get confused and think that going out is about play and don't realize what you want them to do. He'll get it eventually. |
:wavey: Welcome to YT! PLEASE, don't stick the puppy's nose in poo!...you wouldn't like that much would you? I feel doing that is sending the little guy the wrong message. Just be patient & keep taking him back to the pad or outside when he has accidents. |
Hi Stevi, welcome to YorkieTalk! :) I kinda disagree with your vet...I got Sophie from a breeder at 12 weeks and she was already almost 100% pee pad trained. I'm still working on outdoor potty training with her but with the cold weather here in Ontario right now she prefers to hold it and pee inside. Congratulations on your up coming wedding! I look forward to seeing more pictures of Loki and Ryder. They look adorable in your avatar picture. |
Ryder is adorable. How much does he weigh? I also have a Golden Retriever and my yorkie is tiny, so I have not known how to introduce the two for fear she will accidentally hurt him. Mine is 17 weeks and is 2lbs. His name is Toby. |
Just wanted to say hi and congratulations. I personally would ignore advice like that from my vet...lol...and start training anyway, understanding things will change as his body matures, but I'd at least start setting the habits immediately. Consistency is key to success...and in his case, treats may be the clincher. lol I (and DH) ride also although I (we) have not collected all the gear necessary to take Brody and Mia on the motorcycle(s) yet...but we are thinking they might like it...they love going places. I know lots of dogs ride with their Mommies and Daddies...and love it. We plan to start ours out on very short rides to see if they like it...we don't want to scare them, but if they want to ride with us, we want to gradually slide them into it...we don't want them to become frightened. They were over 1 year old before we got them, so we missed the opportunity to start them as little'uns. Glad to hear your Yorkie gets on well with your larger baby...who shares the same good name as my DH's late Rott(en)/Pitt...Mommy's baby, of course! lol So cool that sweet Loki and baby Ryder are so similarly colored...for now, at least...makes for a really cool photo! Again, congratulations! Take care. |
Hu Stevi! and welcome to YT! Congrats on the big day coming :) I started training Ziggy as soon as I got him (8 weeks) there are many acidents but i think thats better. My friend didnt train her baby, started months later, and the puppy was just confused and took way longer than Ziggy to "get it" |

What do y'all ride? Are y'all in a club? I guess if I were gonna start Ryder, I'd need to do it young so it doesn't scare him later. I think I would still be afraid for him. Haha. He is a little dare devil, so I'm sure it wouldn't bother him! He goes potty every time I take him outside. However, he thinks it's play time most of the time and it takes him like, ten minutes to pee. Haha!! Little stinker! I've finally got him to use the puppy pads MOST of the time! There for a couples days, I couldn't get him to use it worth anything, but he's learning! |
