What is the Obsession for Toy Dogs to be no More Than 7 lbs. ;) Just curious as to how the AKC came up with this number. I am watching Dogs 101 on Animal Planet where the toy fox terrier was featured and their standard toy weight is from 3-7 lbs. Then when someone has a dog that is an ounce over the "standard" weight they question if the dog is a pure breed. Just my two cents. ;):animal36 |
Originally the Yorkie was much bigger before the AKC standard was set. I know that didn't answer your question though  |

Most of the toy breeds were smaller when they were first established. I think that stating that anything over 7lbs is not considered purebred might be taking it too far. Too many are aiming at breeding for smaller instead of better. I think it might be better to have the weight range a bit broader. When the weight range is that narrow over time people could start producing too many tiny babies. |
1 Attachment(s) Cesar weighed 7.5 at the vet the other day. I have heard the 7 pound thing and truly he usually isn't that heavy. His prior visit he was 6 pounds. He is in perfect health though so I don't care. |

I don't know why so many want really really tiny dogs either. I prefer a larger size dog for many health and safety reasons, though I do think the little bitty ones are very cute to look at and adorable and I have had 2 - my first because I didn't know better & he would not grow larger than 3 lbs. and my second because she was runt of the litter & I felt I could care best for the special-needs little one than anybody else. My bigger Yorkie that I have now, Tibbe, enjoys a far better and healthier lifestyle than either of my tinies were able to do. |

People think this obsession with size has only been the last 20 years or so, but that's not true. Huddersfield Ben was responsible for producing most of the foundation stock of the Yorkshire Terrier. He was an extremely popular stud dog, who weight between 9 -12 lb, but he regularly sired stock that competed in the under 7 lb limit. Huddersfield Ben - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia So due to Hudderfields Ben, Yorkies could compete in the toy group. Now Ben died in 1871, so Yorkies have been in the toy group, since the beginning of the breed. I think around 1919 a 3 pound Yorkie won best in breed, and over time good breeders learned it's not safe to breed females under 5 pounds to hard on them. |
I´ve had all different sizes and what makes me angry is when people use the size (plus a fancy name for it) to fix the price. Example: Mini tea cup Tea cup Medium Standard large NONE of which exsist-A yorkie is a yorkie-Period. I´ve seen these terms used and the lower down the list they are (the smaller the yorkie) the higher the price. It´s as if the bigger yorkies arent as good or something. My Lady was under 2lbs at 8 years old,and she was EXTREMLY delicate..I knew after her that "tiny" although expensive, wasnt neccesarily better :( Jess was 7lbs at 4 years old and Chicco was 5lbs at the age of 2.I have no idea what Milo & Bella will weight, but I´m not bothered. People who deliberately search for the VERY tiny yorkies have no idea what they´re getting into until they have them :( I prefer to bigger ones personally. |
Its bothers me when people don't know the history of a yorkie yet have one and there small tiny one is the only ones there are and if its bigger it cant be a pure breed its annoying to me especially if someone says something about Callie not be a yorkie because she is 16 pounds and has floppy ears its like dude its none of your business anyway. |
My vet told me that my 6 week old baby girl Ariel Rose can't be full breed yorkie cause she already weighs 2.7 pounds, and her ears are floppy also. But I think shes perfect (: And your princess is tooo cute!! |
The only yorkie I have seen personally that is like 4 pounds is not a pure bred. It is a yorkie/poodle mix. |

Gabby is 2.5lbs. She was charting out to be much bigger but just stopped growing. I was shooting for a 5+ plus dog but it just didn't work out that way. I love her anyway and yes, I've had my fair share of vet bills. Luckily, she's relatively healthy... just tiny as can be. On another note, I've had people offer me anywhere from $2000 - $5000 for her. Just the other day, I was stopped in Petsmart and a lady stopped me and asked me a million and five questions about her age, etc and then asked if I wanted to sell her. At first it was rather amusing that people would try to buy a member of my family. Now it's just annoying. And yeah, I did snap at her for the audacity she displayed. |

Most yorkies ears are still floppy at that age.Infact,I dont think Ive ever seen a 6 week old puppy with its ears up (unless they were taped). At 6 weeks old, both Milo & bella weighed in at 1.7lbs each, but there are bigger babies at that age..Infact,Milo & Bellas sibbling (a female) weighed well over 2lbs at the same age, she´s just bigger ;) Look at this growth chart: Yorkshire Terrier - Yorkie Puppy Growth/Weight Chart - watch us grow |
1 Attachment(s) Kyras were up at 6 weeks lol I will post a picture |

I can now say,I´ve only ever seen one yorkie with it´s ears up at 6 weeks :D She looks tiny by the way..she reminds me of Lady.Lady was under 2lbs at 8 years old (which is the age she died). I cant even remember at what age my previous babies ears went up,and Milo & Bella are 2 months old now,and only Milo has just one ear up.It looks VERY cute, but I´m paranoid about his other ear now lol |
