What is the Obsession for Toy Dogs to be no More Than 7 lbs. ;) Just curious as to how the AKC came up with this number. I am watching Dogs 101 on Animal Planet where the toy fox terrier was featured and their standard toy weight is from 3-7 lbs. Then when someone has a dog that is an ounce over the "standard" weight they question if the dog is a pure breed. Just my two cents. ;):animal36 |

Most of the toy breeds were smaller when they were first established. I think that stating that anything over 7lbs is not considered purebred might be taking it too far. Too many are aiming at breeding for smaller instead of better. I think it might be better to have the weight range a bit broader. When the weight range is that narrow over time people could start producing too many tiny babies. |
1 Attachment(s) Cesar weighed 7.5 at the vet the other day. I have heard the 7 pound thing and truly he usually isn't that heavy. His prior visit he was 6 pounds. He is in perfect health though so I don't care. |

I don't know why so many want really really tiny dogs either. I prefer a larger size dog for many health and safety reasons, though I do think the little bitty ones are very cute to look at and adorable and I have had 2 - my first because I didn't know better & he would not grow larger than 3 lbs. and my second because she was runt of the litter & I felt I could care best for the special-needs little one than anybody else. My bigger Yorkie that I have now, Tibbe, enjoys a far better and healthier lifestyle than either of my tinies were able to do. |

People think this obsession with size has only been the last 20 years or so, but that's not true. Huddersfield Ben was responsible for producing most of the foundation stock of the Yorkshire Terrier. He was an extremely popular stud dog, who weight between 9 -12 lb, but he regularly sired stock that competed in the under 7 lb limit. Huddersfield Ben - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia So due to Hudderfields Ben, Yorkies could compete in the toy group. Now Ben died in 1871, so Yorkies have been in the toy group, since the beginning of the breed. I think around 1919 a 3 pound Yorkie won best in breed, and over time good breeders learned it's not safe to breed females under 5 pounds to hard on them. |
I´ve had all different sizes and what makes me angry is when people use the size (plus a fancy name for it) to fix the price. Example: Mini tea cup Tea cup Medium Standard large NONE of which exsist-A yorkie is a yorkie-Period. I´ve seen these terms used and the lower down the list they are (the smaller the yorkie) the higher the price. It´s as if the bigger yorkies arent as good or something. My Lady was under 2lbs at 8 years old,and she was EXTREMLY delicate..I knew after her that "tiny" although expensive,wasnt neccesarily better :( Jess was 7lbs at 4 years old and Chicco was 5lbs at the age of 2.I have no idea what Milo & Bella will weight,but I´m not bothered. People who deliberately search for the VERY tiny yorkies have no idea what they´re getting into until they have them :( I prefer to bigger ones personally. |
