My baby was neautered today, something isn't right :'( Hello, I need some advice. My dog was neautered today around 9am I picked him up at noon, brought him home he's been shaking, crying and still won't urinate. I've called the vet I'm waiting on a return call andnim in an area where they don't have a vet emergency so I need to do something before they close. Has anyone had their yorkie neautered and had these similar symptoms? What should I expect in the next few days with him? This isn't like him, I know he just had surgery but he doesn't shake like this typically and if the pain meds are still in him why is he crying /whimpering? Please help, any advice I'm crying I'm so worried about him. |
...... I'm sorry but I don't have an answer except to say with all my past male yorkies, I never had that problem. I hope that your vet has called you back by now, but in the meantime, why not try posting in Emergencies Talk as I'm sure there is always someone hanging around there that may be able to help you. Please keep us informed as to how he is doing. Good Luck ! |
It doesn't sound normal but growing up we only had one boy and his nuetering went fine and I have a girl now. Do you think he could be cold have you tried covering him with a blanket or putting a shirt on him? |
Did they give you pain med's to bring home? I would ask for some. My daughter had her pup done on Monday,She said he did some whineing so she gave him some of his pain med's. Took care of the problem, but he was't shaking I hope you hear from your vet soon. Will be praying for you both.:animal-pa |
did they give him a pain injection? did they give you pain killers it sounds to me that your baby is in pain.. when my Harry was neutered, I paid for a pain injection that last 24 hours, and after that, I had 4 doses of methacam pain killer to give him. he slept a LOT the first day and the whole night, he did not pee because he had nothing to eat since midnight prior to the surgery. after I got home they told me to offer him ice cubes and not lots of water because it would upset his tummy. please call them and ask them for a pain killer..and tell them what's going on.. hugs, |
I agree, it sound like he is in Pain. :( My vet sent me home with pain meds for a few days. |
Any update? Praying he is better |
Thanks everyone! The Vet called back and said just try to keep him quiet and comfortable. Im like no crap I knew that but there is obviously a reason why he's crying. They did give him pain meds but Im not sure if it was injection or not. Since Ive last posted he's went potty and I managed to get some treats in him(he wont eat his dog food yet) has yet to drink anything either. The shaking has stopped and is now wrapped in his blanket and sleep sound on my bed!! I will be giving him part of his pain pill if he wakes up during the night. Thanks everyone for your help, It hurt me to see him hurt I even cried while holding him in my arms :( |
I am glad he is doing better. Please keep us updated. He should be getting up and around more tomorrow. |
I deff will keep you all posted! I appreciate the help, Ive never owned a little dog and it just really worried me :( My parents own big bull dogs and my parents said "oh thats normal" well I didn't think so and just needed opinions of others. I'm hoping he drinks a little tomorrow. |
Poor baby. :( So from what you are saying it doesn't sound like they sent you home with any pain meds? Glad to hear he is doing a little bit better. My guy wouldn't eat after being neutered and someone here mentioned to mix scrambled eggs in with his regular food and it worked like a charm to get him eating again. |
sorry to hear your little guy is going through this...sometimes coming out of anesthesia can cause shaking as well...and they will shake if they are in pain...which I'm sure he is...hoping he is back to himself tomorrow |

So by now I assume you have spoken to the vet by now and hopefully the baby is doing well. Just give him plenty of TLC, as my vet told me, and he will be fine in a few days. |
That is really an unusual thing to happen after a neuter. It seems as though maybe they did not use enough anesthetic? Usually vets keep surgery patients a bit longer than yours was in order for the anesthetic to wear off. Your guy may have been just coming out of what ever they used on him. It is pretty common for dogs to have a rough time when they first come out of the anesthetic. That is why the vet should make sure the dog is fully out of it before they send him home. It sounds like he is doing better now. He should not have much pain from here on out. Hopefully he will be a lot better tomorrow. Poor guy. I think they just should have kept him a little longer and maybe made sure he was warm and comfortable as he came out of it. |

I was able to get in touch with my cousin who is a vet tech, I named her the med's that were on the sheet they sent home with me and I guess he was given 2 pain shot injections and she said the one last for 24hrs. I agree, they should have kept him longer than they did it would have saved me from stressing and worrying about my baby. He keeps moving around on the bed to get comfortable so hopefully we sleep well tonight lol Thanks again everyone, I'm praying for him to feel better tomorrow! |

He slept with me for a week until he peed on my bed lol. Then I said to him 'OK, I think it's time for you to go back to your crate now.'. This was day 5 and he was as good as new by then AND the crate is next to my bed. I think it was mommy's fault as she didn't check to see if he needed to pee pee before he got on the bed; he can't get down on his own as my bed is very high. |
Sounds like they sent him home too soon. Bailey was there at 8am and they wouldn't let us come get him till after 4pm. He should be better in a day or so. Just be there for him. Good luck. |
So glad to hear he's doing better, poor little guy. Hope you both have a good night sleep !!! Keep us posted. |
hope your baby boy is feeling better today!! |
when I had Morgan neutered they kept him overnight/ he came home the next day like nothing happened hope your baby feels better |
I do not understand why they sent him home so quickly. |
I LOVE my vet and the associate vets in her clinic. They do not tolerate dogs in pain! That is a no-no! When they send any of my babies home following surgery, they call about every 4 hours to see how the dog is doing. Of course, they give that pain shot after surgery, but they also send home pain med and they watch the dosing effectiveness closely, to be absolutely certain it is working and the baby is NOT in any pain. I love them for that...... |
Well, we were up for an hr or so I found him just standing up I felt so bad. He is still going potty but I had to put water into a syringe in order to keep him hydrated. I slipped his pain pill in his treat so I hope it kicks in soon because he's shaking again. We are orig from va beach where he sees banfield pet hosp, they are amazing. I moved to pa since my husband just deployed and there was no banfield around nearest is Maryland. I'm now wishing I would have taken him there at least they call to check on him and are great with pain mgt. right now he's wrapped in his blanket in my arm sleeping, he's being treated like a baby lol he has ate this morning so we are making progress :) |
After Lexi was spayed and started shaking they discovered she had picked up a virus (I had to use a different vet for the spay). Took her back in and they put her on antibiotics. Cleared it up for us. Maybe he picked something up at the vets. Might be worth asking. Hope he feels better very soon |
My little guy was neutered on the 5th and just had his stitches removed on the 16th. His surgery was in the morning and the doctor called late morning to let me know he did really well and it was all routine. She said I could call at night to see how he is doing if I want, but no news is good news. I did call later and they said he was doing fine and pawing at his cage whenever anyone walked by to let them know he was there. I called in the morning and he was all ready to be picked up and was very excited to see me. They sent him home with pain pills (1/8 of a tablet for the little puppy), and I did give them for a few days. He did very well. I'm glad the vet's policy is to keep the dogs overnight for observation, because I wouldn't have known what to expect. They did tell me that the anesthesia would be in him all day. (They give a mixture of drugs to begin the sedation process and then Propothol during the procedure. The mixture of drugs would stay in his system all day they told me.) Maybe your puppies reaction is normal, since he probably still had anesthesia in him. I would have been so nervous and upset to see him this way. I'm so glad to hear that he is feeling better now. |
If he has no fever, I am still thinking it is a pain issue....how is his pain med ordered? If it is ordered "three times a day, as needed...", count on him needing it and just go ahead and divide up the 24 hours into 3...that will be every eight hours he gets a pain pill.....if going 8 hours between the pain med is too long, and after 4 hours he wakes up shaking and crying, you need to call his vet and tell him the pain med is not helping at the current dosing and ask how often you can give it, 4-5-6 times a day??...which would be every 4,5, or 6 hours/24 hour period. |
I'm going to share, but it is not my intention to scare you. My yorkie had the same symptoms. I thought it was pain, and gave him a pain pill. it got worse!!!! He was crying, shaking, wouldn't sit still, and on and on. Turns out, my baby is in the small percentage of pups that do not tolerate pain meds well. I stopped giving hem to him and he got better. Same thing happened when he had his dental a few months ago. They gave him something mild for the discomfort, and he was nuts all night. Neither of us slept. As soon as it wore off, I had my happy go lucky pup back. That's 2 different situations, 2 years apart, same reaction. Kaji just doesn't do well with pain medication. :( |
This is really concerning to me as males usually have such an easier time of it than the females do. Maybe he had more blood loss than usual? Is he cold? Some Yorkies do tend to get cold easier than other dogs. It could be with the surgery and trying to readjust to the changes that his body temp is not regulating as it should. I have also noticed that some vets are still using non absorbing stitches! I haven\'t had an animal that needed stitches removed in years. Our vets use stitches that absorb into the body and do not need to be removed. Since they are placed more interior than regular stitches the animal is less able to chew at them. |
