coyatoes and hawks we have a abundance of coyatoes in my area..last wk a man had his yorkie on leash and 2 coyatoes attacked and ran off with dog....a we have a hawk constantly circuling back pool area..I am a nervous wreck |
I live right at the base of the Wasatch Mountains. Quite a few times I've seen hawks in my area circling overhead. Because of this, I never leave my girls outside without me there. Generally, a hawk won't attack if there's a larger predator in the vicinity of what it perceives as prey. I got so nervous that I pee pad trained :) |
You have to be careful when you have such prey surrounding you. |
Rylee Belle is totally pee pad trained unless I am right there with her when she is outside. We have had coyotes, hawks and owls in our yard and I am just too afraid to let her out on her own. I don't blame you for being nervous..............watch your baby like a "hawk"! ;) |
I have a predator issue...hawks especially..I bought these owls from Ace hardware....I have them all over the yard, but you have to move them around ever 3-4 days or the hawks soon learn they are not a threat! I even ordered one that moves its head around....it is awsome! I still NEVER let my babies out into my secure, fenced back yard, unsupervised! |
Oh no please be careful! We have coyotes, hawks, and owls too. It so scary. I never let mine out alone and keep them pretty close to the house. |
I know how you feel. I live down in a wooded area that is quite a distance from the road. We have several different predators including coyotes, hawks, owls, foxes and occasional bear and bob cats traveling through. If I had a fenced yard I could never let Gracie out in it anyway. I walk her only at certain times of day and I keep her right next to me. I never let her out ahead of me. She loves going out and I would not deprive her of the fun she has outside but it is a bother having to watch for those who might think she is a snack. |
We have hawks and owls around our house. Even with a large fenced in yard back yard I have an xpen, in the grass area by the pool. My husband put thick mesh over the top of it. This is for her potty area. When she is out for exercise I keep her on a short leash close to me. |
ZoE & I walked my property last week as the weather has turned nice and the grass is starting to grow, so I thought I'd walk out back and make sure it was dry enough to mow and to check that no debris had blown into the back yard that might wreck my mower blades. I had ZoE on her 20 ft training leash. She was ahead of me and sniffing like crazy at something. I pulled her away from the area and as I walked closer, I saw that it was a small deer leg. Mostly just bone left...but the whole fricken leg! Coyotes. Some nights ZoE wakes me up because she hears them howling, so I know they are around...but it's totally different knowing that they've actually been in your backyard . |
Hawks, etc I NEVER just open door and let my babies out! But now my VET suggested carrying air BB with me...!! |
I ALWAYS walk my fence line and just kind of scope out the yard befroe I allow my babies to join me in my back yard. My family has often accused me of being totally over the top with this....and I may be, but it has paid off on several occasions that I am AWARE or...when my neighbors hoodlum 18 year old son with a 6 page rap sheet, got angry when I called the police about him shooting at passing cars from his upstairs bedroom window (hopefully it was a BB gun!), so he threw fishing hooks over my fence into my yard for my babies to get caught up in....and there was the morning I walked around the side of the house to start my fenceline walk, and came nose to nose with a bob cat, resting on the top of my 8 foot wooden fence....I am happy I can realize the dangers as they have presented themselves, and I do not listen to ANYONE about "being over the top"!!! |
With such small dogs, I don't think anyone can be over protective. Fortunately for us, we have enough country with an abundance of natural prey animals, that we don't hear of prey birds or coyotes hunting in back yards, but still concerning. (coyotes are a huge problem though for farm and barn cats. Many farms around here can't keep cats around due to bob cats, coyotes and birds) I was awakened the other night to an owl hooting close to my bedroom window. That was kind of an Oh ___! moment for me. Our owls are the huge ones and more freightening than the hawks. |
I have coyotes and hawks in my area, too. Because of this, I keep Tatiana inside the house, except on our daily walks and outings when she's kept on a leash or in a carrier. That's when I'm reasonably assured she's safe and secure. |
same here and i am always with my babies when outside...the neighbor has a rotti who thinks my dogs are snacks....not to mention the fisher cats. i agree with yorkie mom 1 you can never be to safe or cautious. EVER. |

I have thought about getting those owls also. Wasn't sure if they would work. I will try that. Mine only go out if someone is standing right over them. Never at dark, owls hang around. This is why I take them to doggie day care 3-days a week, so they can go out and run and play while I work. |
We also have hawks and coyotes and then last night there was a panther screaming in the field near us ( we live in the country) I was never as parinoid as I have become since becoming a yorkie owner. |
My aunt's Yorkie was taken by a coyote from their front yard a few days before Christmas in 2010. They were watching out of the window for her to finish peeing and let her back inside, and the coyote ran up so fast and ran off with her that my uncle said even if he had a gun with him, he wouldn't have had time to shoot. :( |
That is so sad :(. People may laugh but I literally pray over my babies every day that they be protected from preditors. |

Yes. Continue to be over the top!:thumbup::thumbup: |
Welll just heard on the radio that there is now Coyote warnings - at Cherry Beach - which is a leash free beach area for our pups! I love going there with the dogs And this is city too. I will have to change my swim times to co-incide with afternoons. Coyotes shouldn't be out and about then . I don't think and there will be lots of big dogs around ... including mine |

"Over the top" is infinitely better than "six feet under"...and my choice, too! :p |

Cozy (16 pounds) and Lucy (8.5 pounds) would give most predators hernias if they went after them. |

We have a pair of hawkes that live in the woods behind our house. The other day it killed and ate a bluejay right in our front yard. I never leave my little ones outside alone.. |
My parents have Hawks in their area and my sister who doesn't live too far from them has both Coyote and Hawks.... All we have here in the city are opossum and rats. Some of the rats are bigger than the small dogs around here. |
My house faces (the land between the lakes) so name your prey we have it, that is why all of my dogs are trained to pee pads..they sun in an enclosed deck with wire and lattice with a doggie door to keep them safe... |
I too lost my yorkie to a coyote fri nite and i live in a residential area 1 house up from a Main road .. please watch your babies RIP KATIE |
