Puppy watch
 
Hi my name is Terri and I am new to this site. Well in the sense I've just joined but I read stuff on here all the time. I am the mother to 2 Yorkies Pepper (male) and Basil (female). Basil is pregnant she is 60days and almost 48hrs ago she started leaking a clear liquid about 12 hrs ago she stopped eatting. Her temperature dropped but only to 99 degrees. She pee's a lot now and my husband who has had several litters from a child says she is fine I'm freaking out! The vet said there are 2pups in there. Basil looks sad but she isn't making any noises, does anyone have any advice?:confused:

Hi and welcome:) I'm sorry but I'm not a breeder but have been reading and learning here for quite a while. It sounds like she's getting ready to whelp soon now. Please read all you can, and repost this in the Breeder Talk section. One site that is extremely good is Dog Breeding and Canine Reproduction by Debbie Jensen. Dog Breeding and Whelping guide for dog breeders.

Generally a discharge means that labor is going to begin within the next 24 hours. If it does not and she is still having discharge get her to the vet.

The Breeder came over to assist me and she said something was wrong, we took Basil to the Vet and she is having a C-section and it looks like 3 pups now. We do not know if her pups will make it yet :(

Glad you have someone with you to help you through this. Keeping Basil in my thoughts. Let us know how you make out.

Basil is doing fine one of the pups passed, but the other two are doing good one of the pups is in excellent health the other one is breathing but is in critical shape. Please keep us in your prayers and I will keep everyone posted. Oh and I went ahead and let them spay Basil since she has a difficult labor.

I'm so glad you had her spayed and also very happy you had someone to help you. C-sections can be very difficult on the puppies because of the anesthetic getting into their system. Hope they had someone there for just the puppies.

So sorry to hear of the one puppy passing and I am glad that you were able to get Basil to the vet. I will say prayers for you and Basil and her babies. And by the way, welcome to YT.

Thank goodness the breeder came and recognized a problem...that probably saved Basil's life. Prayers going up for the babies and Basil as well....

Thanks! It just goes to show you anything can go wrong, I read the books, talked to Vet, had the test ran both dogs are AKC registered and come from champion blood lines, had my whelping kit and a the breeder I purchased Basil from willing to assist me! I will be fixing all my pets from now on! It's been stressful and I worried too much!

Basil will not let the puppies latch on to feed they are asking us to put them down or the assistant asked us to sign over our rights and she will take them home and feed them but than they are her dogs! I want to keep my pups and that seems unethical can someone help please?

Sometimes it takes a couple days especially for a new mom that's had a c-section. Do you have someone who can teach you to tube and/or bottle feed? It has to be done every 3 hrs at least around the clock for a newborn and they need to be kept very warm - will Basil's breeder help you? Where are you located?

Please post in the breeder section & they can assist you on how & what to feed your puppies. They will need to eat every 1 to 2 hrs throughout the night, so don't plan on sleeping much for the next few days until the pups can feed from mom.

She will let them feed soon. I would take them all home and take care of them. I've never heard of a vet's office saying something like that.

I do not know how to tube feed Basil's breeder is 3hrs away and elderly! I feel like I was forced to give up my puppies they kept telling me they would die! I couldn't get the breeder on the line so I agrees to sign them over! I think since I was so emotional they took advantage of me! And they did all of this over the phone....... I am so so sad......I didn't know what to do! I just want them to live, I never planned to sale them I wanted to be able to see them and share some joy with my family and now I won't get that! I can not stop crying this really sucks!

I agree, This is not a vet I would ever go to again. Instead of telling you nonsense he should have been telling & showing you how to take care of those pups.

I called them back and threatened a law suit! I'm bringing my puppies home I calling around now seeing who can help me tube feed them ;) when I called she said they'll probably die which was a horrible thing to say! I'm in eastpointe, mi if any one wants to help thanks so much!

Sadly I've heard of this before - sounds to me like the tech wanted a couple free yorkie puppies! Glad you'll be bringing them home - I wish I where closer, I'd come show you what to do - but I'm in Nevada!

I agree. They are trying to snatch some babies from you. Get them out of there. It is very likely that the mom is more than willing to care for her babies.

Also most grocery stores have a puppy & kitten formulas in the pet section that can do in the mean time until either they will nurse or you can find something better to feed. Goats milk is also good.

I'd recommend going to a Petco or similar store and buying a good puppy milk replacement. There's a couple good ones either premixed or powdered you add water to. The formula is the easy part - the method is the hard part and unfortunately that's something very difficult to explain even over the phone :(. And newborns may need to be tube fed especially if weak - and that's certainly not something I can explain without showing someone. She needs someone local to her that can show her the proper method to feed these tiny ones!

Do you have them home now ? have they eaten anything since birth ? Tube feeding can be tricky as you have to be sure the tube is in the tummy & not the lung or you will kill the pup.

I agree. Sometimes rescue remedy to slightly calm the mother will help - or gently restraining her while puppies nurse the first few times. Nursing will cause her body to release hormones and help her bond to her puppies. It's not uncommon for c-section moms to initially reject their babies - but even if you have to generally restrain the mom, most learn to care for them if you can get them nursing at all.

Exactly, and this is exactly why I won't attempt to explain how to do this online or over the phone - one tiny mistake and you can easily kill the puppy, but once you understand how to do it properly it's not that hard!

Yes I agree a vet is needed. I am not a fan of the puppy formulas from the store but they will do unless they cause severe diarrhea. I agree about the tube feeding & think she should try a sering or bottle 1st.

Absolutely! It's best to get them to suckle if possible! There are some good puppy formula recipes but again, easy to mess up if things aren't done just right - so I generally recommend a commercial product for novice owners. Rice water (the water you drain off after cooking rice) can replace regular water if diarrhea occurs - goats milk puppy milk is also often easier then regular puppy milk.
