Hi all. We brought home our new 8 week old puppy yesterday. She's as cute as a bug with personality plus!! Likes her crate and eats good. I posted her picture in another post introducing her but will post another here.

But I have a question about her hair. I wasn't expecting to see grey at the roots of my dog's head. I thought it would be gold. I'm thinking that means she will be grey or black on her head instead of a gold head?? WHat do you all think? I don't really care, just curious.

I'm a little curious too. You can see from these pictures Sheila has the same thing with the white at the top of her head.

Just to say that when Gypsy Rose started changing colour on the head area we really thought for quite a while that it was white/silver - even nicknamed her the "Silver Lady" or Silver Streak!! BUT it turned out to be tan in the end... now our little one (Gizzie) looks as if she's changing to silver but am reserving judgement.... :confused: Ana xx

It will change to tan at or around 2 years!
 
My york is one year old today. She's still white on top. It is called breaking silver and the earlier the better. It will turn gold at or around 2 years.

I didnt realise that! Snoodles is a year old and is silver on top of her head. I thought this would be her color now. Guess we all learn something here. I like the gold much better. So, we will have to see what happens in the next year.

Interesting, Sheila is 12 weeks in those pictures. When I got her at 8 weeks the area where the white is now was almost bald and now it's growing in a lot and white with black tips.

Tia has a lot of silver coming through as well. I also assumed this meant she'd eventually have a silver head! :) Good to know! :D

So when it breaks and turns a light white/silver color, it will eventually be tan/gold???

When the head color breaks to white early assures you a silky coat ....If they dont break white on the head and their root color is dark brown or remains black pretty well assures you a modified coat. You should begin to see the breaking at about 8 weeks old starting and continue to change until about 1 year old possibly 2 years...

How cool is that? Max's hair on top of his head was white w/black tips @ 8 weeks when we picked him up, and since he's had 2 trims now, the black tips are gone & his little noggin is all white.

Anyway, I hope this thing about the early break to white = silky coat is true, because Max is just a ball of mats right now! Brushing every day...he doesn't like it yet, but I'm still hoping he'll get used to it. :)

Pita is all white on her head and down the middle of her back too, she looks like a skunk! Does anyone else have that down the back? She's 4 1/2 months.

Mia's was almost white underneath when we got her at 13 wks. Just had black tips. Her coat was very tangly and matted easily until about 6 mo and now doesn't mat. Her head now is very light tan. Her legs went almost white, too, and now seem quite a bit darker.

Fun to watch them change colors.

Whimiscal Daizy! Snoodles also hates brushing! Drives me crazy. I have brushed her every day since I got her. It is a struggle every morning! Souldn't you think they would get used to it afteer while She fights me every inch of the way. I can brush her back, but her legs and belly is a big fight! Maybe Some Day? Pat

My pups are 12 weeks with no white or light color coming through. There are only some gold streaks coming through the tops of their heads, as for their backs, it's black.
What does modified coat mean? Their parents are champion show dogs. I've seen the pictures and have seen all the documentation and the dogs. They look beautiful. The breeder told me that they have extraordinary coats (the pups that is).

My little Reese has white on her head with black tips. Looks like she's balding!! I was a little nervous, thinking her coat will be really thin or silver, but I feel better hearing some of you all have the same thing. Reese is 3 1/2 months old and she's starting to get white down the middle of her back.
