Grey on the head... 1 Attachment(s) Hi all. We brought home our new 8 week old puppy yesterday. She's as cute as a bug with personality plus!! Likes her crate and eats good. I posted her picture in another post introducing her but will post another here. But I have a question about her hair. I wasn't expecting to see grey at the roots of my dog's head. I thought it would be gold. I'm thinking that means she will be grey or black on her head instead of a gold head?? WHat do you all think? I don't really care, just curious. Thanks, jodi |
2 Attachment(s) I'm a little curious too. You can see from these pictures Sheila has the same thing with the white at the top of her head. |
Just to say that when Gypsy Rose started changing colour on the head area we really thought for quite a while that it was white/silver - even nicknamed her the "Silver Lady" or Silver Streak!! BUT it turned out to be tan in the end... now our little one (Gizzie) looks as if she's changing to silver but am reserving judgement.... Ana xx |
It will change to tan at or around 2 years! My york is one year old today. She's still white on top. It is called breaking silver and the earlier the better. It will turn gold at or around 2 years. |
I didnt realise that! Snoodles is a year old and is silver on top of her head. I thought this would be her color now. Guess we all learn something here. I like the gold much better. So, we will have to see what happens in the next year. Pat |

Tia has a lot of silver coming through as well. I also assumed this meant she'd eventually have a silver head! :) Good to know! :D |
So when it breaks and turns a light white/silver color, it will eventually be tan/gold??? |
When the head color breaks to white early assures you a silky coat ....If they dont break white on the head and their root color is dark brown or remains black pretty well assures you a modified coat. You should begin to see the breaking at about 8 weeks old starting and continue to change until about 1 year old possibly 2 years... congrats and gl to you and your new baby |

Anyway, I hope this thing about the early break to white = silky coat is true, because Max is just a ball of mats right now! Brushing every day...he doesn't like it yet, but I'm still hoping he'll get used to it. :) |
Pita is all white on her head and down the middle of her back too, she looks like a skunk! Does anyone else have that down the back? She's 4 1/2 months. |

Fun to watch them change colors. |
Whimiscal Daizy! Snoodles also hates brushing! Drives me crazy. I have brushed her every day since I got her. It is a struggle every morning! Souldn't you think they would get used to it afteer while She fights me every inch of the way. I can brush her back, but her legs and belly is a big fight! Maybe Some Day? Pat |

What does modified coat mean? Their parents are champion show dogs. I've seen the pictures and have seen all the documentation and the dogs. They look beautiful. The breeder told me that they have extraordinary coats (the pups that is). |
My little Reese has white on her head with black tips. Looks like she's balding!! I was a little nervous, thinking her coat will be really thin or silver, but I feel better hearing some of you all have the same thing. Reese is 3 1/2 months old and she's starting to get white down the middle of her back. |

I thought Esme was going bald too until I really looked at her close up!!!! I am sooo glad to hear that all your babies looked like they were going bald too! |
Bo is 4 1/2 months old and he is silver on his nose, between his eyes starting to go really silver on the top of his head but still mostly grey. But his back is still jet black and his fur is still very thick and fluffy but soft. Does this mean his coat will be the cottony type?? |
I have 2-6month old yorkies and one is almost white and the other is just starting to get a spot about the size of a quarter on the top of his head that is grey so maybe he is a late bloomer or I also hear somewhere that puppies all look the same when they are born but have 2 different types of adult coats. One is "Black and Tan" and the other is called "Silver Blue" the second is most prefered... again this may be a rumor started by my breeder. |
Altesse was black and tan until she was 2 years old and then she changed for a wonderful dark steel blue ans splendid golden head . I really thought she was going to be black and tan all her life . What mother nature can do ? |
a modified coat is thicker than a silky then you have wooley which is most often dull and sometimes a bit curly or wavey. The sooner the coat breaks the easier it is to know what kind of coat you will have. Its not always the case but a good prediction. |
My lirrle Lexy is 9 weeks old and has no white on her head. Does this mean she will not have a silky coat as an adult? It doesn't matter to us, but I'm just curious. Her "baby hair" is very soft! Elizabeth |

The breeder I got my puppy from says that they should stay a black and tan/gold color and that when they are 1 1/2 years old, they will turn the desirable steel blue. He disagrees about the grey heads. He says this leads to the silver blue that is undesirable. I asked about the silky coat, and he says that when they turn to steel blue, the silkiness of the coat comes out. Here is the AKC website he gave me. http://www.akc.org/breeds/yorkshire_terrier/index.cfm Here's the part about the colors. Colors Puppies are born black and tan and are normally darker in body color, showing an intermingling of black hair in the tan until they are matured. Color of hair on body and richness of tan on head and legs are of prime importance in adult dogs, to which the following color requirements apply: Blue: Is a dark steel-blue, not a silver-blue and not mingled with fawn, bronzy or black hairs. Tan: All tan hair is darker at the roots than in the middle, shading to still lighter tan at the tips. There should be no sooty or black hair intermingled with any of the tan. |
My mother have a Yorkie girl named Kellie . When she was 3 months old , her head was white and it turned to golden later . Kellie is now a golden headed ,platinum Yorkie. She is so beautiful . |
I am so glad someone mentioned this because Quincy's hair is coming in silver also. Thank you so much for the info, I had no idea what was going on. |
My Yorkie has the same thing. I thought it was just me. He has gray at the top and white down his back. |
