Purebred or mixed?? 3 Attachment(s) Hi. I recently bought my first Yorkie(and am new to the site) and I was wondering if anyone thinks he is mixed? The breeder gave me the CKC Registration Form and it says that both the mother and father is purebred, but I know that all you need is two witnesses to sign it and that dog is registered. I didn't get a chance to see the parents because the breeder met me half way(he lives 3 hours from me). So, my question is, what does everyone think? He has the markings of a Yorkie, docked tail, dew claws removed. His nose just gets me! Of course, I will keep my baby either way, I just want to know if I was lied to. Thanks! -Kayla & Tucker. =) |
If you are concerned do a DNA test on the pup. By CKC I assume you mean the continental kennel club; and not the Canadian Kennel Club. Your pics were very blurry and all I saw was the blurred face, plus you did not say how old this pup was supposed to be when purchased. His ears are down, he looks smallish and I am assuming 8-10 wks old. I would need shots at least of his profile nose to tail and clear images. His coloration looks a tad off, but again that may be the quality of the pics submitted. So if you knew that this "ckc" was just a paper registry why did you buy from a breeder that "registers" her dogs with a suspect registry? |
I have a hard time judging what a dog is as a puppy. Many yorkie mixes look like purebred yorkies as puppies, but as they grow older it becomes obvious they aren't. As gemy said above, if you really want to know, do a DNA test. |
He has a longish nose for a Yorkie that age, my guess is that he's a mix. I've heard that breeders in AZ mix yorkies with Silkies and you often get this type of look with the longer nose. As Gemy says, you can't be sure without a DNA test, some dogs are purebred, but they just don't look it because the breeder didn't know how to breed. I would not support a CKC (Continental Kennel Club) breeder. So many pet quality Yorkies are available through rescue, the only reason to buy a puppy is to support a breeder who is breeding to preserve and improve the breed. I really don't think a purebred is "better" than a mutt, it's all about the breeders for me, and now that you have this dog, I'm glad you will love him no matter what, but I hope next time you go to buy a dog, you will find the best breeder you can find. |
As I said in my thread, I'm new to all of this. I've did my research on Yorkies before I bought him. But this is the first dog I've ever bought. I tried to upload better pictures but that's the best I have, as of right now. He is 8 weeks old today. I've read on here that that was too early to take away from his mother, but he is eating hard food and playing as a usual puppy is. He is up-to-date on shots(I've got his Medical Record). CKC is Continental Kennel Club, but he wasn't going to be a show dog or used for breeding, so I didn't think anything of the registration. |

It's not just the registration....a reputable registration is just PART of the puppy selection process. The reputation of the breeder, the quality of the breeding parents, the health testing done on the parents and the lines they are from are all part of choosing a purebred puppy. To not follow the basic parts is gambling with the puppy's purity and health, and possibly supporting a byb or puppymill. That being said, I understand that, for most, once you have your puppy, he's yours and you love him no matter what. So, love on him, give him good food, quality medical care and a great home and he'll love you for life :) Congratulations on your new puppy! I'm guessing his name is Tucker? |

Conratulations on your new furbaby! Soon enough you will see him changing and getting cuter and cuter and you won't give 2 sh$@s about being a purebred...That's just my opinion. :) |

I did zero research before buying mine, and we did everything wrong! Didn't see the parents, left without paperwork, "breeder" who leaves puppies at work and not at home, I didn't even know yorkies changed colors! We got so lucky that Uni only has LP and never got anything worse. But we didn't know. If you researched, you should have known what to look for as far as red flags. Now that you have the dog, I hope he doesn't get "too big" or doesn't look yorkie enough, as we've heard so many times before. |

To be fair though, I did get help in training from bf staying home from work for like 2 weeks. And I just have one (Uni) and my current fosters, now it's Scraps. I foster in part bc I am trying to make up for the fact that I supported what I now know to be a broker. :thumbdown:mad: Never again will I give my hard earned money to people that make money off poor defenseless puppies and the mommy dogs trapped in kennels to be puppy making machines. |
I don't care if he is purebred, I just want to know if I was duped. I did call him(just now) and asked for pictures, and he said he would send them by the end of the weekend. Yes, his name is Tucker. =) I paid $400 for him.(= I'm already too attached to him to give him up "if he isn't enough Yorkie for me". I love him already. And I would never think in a million years to get rid of him. He's my baby(as I can't have children). I've always wanted a Yorkie, and my husband and I finally decided to get one, after buying our first home. =) I would have never questioned his breed, if it wasn't for the nose. When I looked at pictures, they had smaller noses. When I met the breeder, and he brought the puppies out I knew I wasn't leaving without one, so I have Tucker<3 I'm very gullible(I will admit it). So when he said the parents were purebred, I believed him. He showed me the papers for the parents(which said they were full-blooded and that they are both around 6-7 lbs.) |

Please do read in the library about Dr Jean Dodds vaccination protocols for dogs and in particular small breed dogs. Unfortunately for you, the registry is very important if you are wanting to purchase a purebred Yorkie; already you knew that two witnesses attesting to the fact this was a purebred was kind of "fishy". And so here you are; asking us if this is a purebred Yorkie. There is much more to a reputable breeder than just a registry; but I do not know of any reputable breeders who are breeding to better the breed registering their dogs with the continental club. Love your pup as I'm sure you already to; and do a DNA test if you want to address any issues with your breeder. |

So we asked the "breeder" did she not allow breeding of her dogs, and she says no I don't do that, you can do whatever you want. And here we were thinking, Great! If anyone out there doesn't remember, we initially got Uni to breed TO MAKE MONEY SELLING HER PUPPIES. Long legged, big eared, LP grade 2 having light colored, tall freak yorkies that get mistaken for papillons. LOL. And no I wouldn't have been a good breeder, I bet I would have fainted or barfed at the first sight of anything weird. |

Hi Kayla and Tucker welcome to YT:D Tucker is a cutie pie. If you are unsure if he is a purebred I would get a DNA test. Check out other threads here with people that have the same questions. You came to a great place with a lot of information. |

What do you mean human turned admin? I'm no admin at all! I'm all human! We all know admins are all robots sitting somewhere in Silicon Valley! :p That's not me! Anyway, as much as I don't like the sound of me being around the block, I guess I have as far as yorkies are to be concerned. I really don't want to jump on noobs, but it's noobs that say they did their research and they know what to look out for, but then didn't do what they were warned against that gets me. Like the OP. We are just looking out for the breed we love. I'm really tired, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I work everyday and apparently it's Thurs and I thought it was Tues. OMG :eek::eek: Dang mouse, I pushed the eek button once and it went three times. |
2 Attachment(s) Kyra at 9 weeks had shorter hair and a longer nose as you can see in the first picture but at 21 weeks she now has tons of hair and a shorter nose so its real hard for me to tell by just those two things. |

Not sure whether Tucker is purebred or not, but he sure is a Cutie! I just wanted to say Congrats on your new pup and Welcome to YT!! I brought my previous pup home at 8-weeks old and he lived to a very Healthy 13-years old. I brought my current pup home at about 10 1/2 weeks. Lastly, $400 is an awesome price and I know you are already in Love with him whether he is pure, or not..... :) |
Hi and welcome. I have two yorkie pups. Molly's nose is longer than Lily's. I wouldn't worry too much about taking him at 8 weeks in the UK they took pups away from 6 weeks when I was little. All our dogs when I was growing up we're Round 8 weeks or so when taken from mum especially working dogs. Yyou can teach him everything he needs to know. Make sure he meets lots of other dogs (all fully vaccinated) and yelp if he bites too hard. That's what his mum would do. He looks okay to me from the pics. He's still young and his ears will change as he gets older.have him vet checked soon as possible At the end of the day as long as he is loved fed and cared for he will do just fine and I'm sure you will do this with pleasure. Enjoy your bundle of fun. |

Welcome and congrats on little Tucker! He is adorable whether he is pure or not. Like the others have said, if you really want to know, have a DNA test done. I ended up bringing Jack home at 10 weeks old - at that time, I knew nothing of how to pick out a yorkie or to wait until they are 12 weeks old - I didn't know I shouldn't buy him from a store, etc. I found this site after I was already home with him. That being said, we did and continue to have socialization issues with him. I had been taking him to a yorkie play group and the lady that was running it moved away, so we are back to square one. He was really doing good and making some progress too. We have had him on vacation with us this week and he is doing much better with humans, not so much with other dogs though - I will continue to work on this. He does bite but not hard - we did the whole yelping at him when he was younger to get him to realize that he was biting too hard. It took over a year to get him totally potty trained and every now and then he will still have a small accident... that being said, Jack is the most wonderful, sweetest, loving little guy (though we have to bribe him for kisses) ever. Again, welcome and good luck. |
Hi and grats on your new baby! All I can say is, in the end you will love him like no other and he will be a special part of your life :) |
Well I am going to get the hot water shower in this one but here it goes... I only register my dogs AKC if I am planing on keeping a show one or two. the ooops litter was registered with a lesser registry to save money, all of you seen the conditions that my puppies are welcome in this world and how they live , I can't afford to pay AKC registration specially with a back to back litter that the two i just have, GOOD BREEDERS do not make any money..besides I am very upset with AKC for allowing a showing of a dog that was BRED thru two MERLE parents. I know I might be the exeception to the rule, but the AKC is becoming a MONEY talk registry in my humble opinion.. to the OP, if you send me a full body shot of your baby and tell me, does he look more longer than tall? does his coat is more sparse than the full fluffy full coat yorkies puppies show? maybe he is a silky and they are as good as yorkies.. hugs, |
