need help with the begger how can i stop lexi from begging? is it too late?, she is 8 months old. when i fix myself something to eat and bring it into the living room, she runs and gets there before i do and wants some of mine.. what i usually do is take some of her hard treats and give it to her, she thinks shes getting what i have.. i bet im doing a terribe thing right? if im sitting at the kitchen table, no matter what house im in and there is food, she will jump on the chair or my lap to get some food.. please help, i want to fix this matter if i can...its only me and her in the house, so i feel as she is all i have, you know what i mean and i tend to give her whatever she wants... she has terrible manners and its all my fault and now shes gonna have to deal with it...now im gonna feel bad... any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks gina |
dont want this thread to get lost, i really need help with it...pleeze |
Awh....I know it is hard but I had to the same thing with Jake. I finally had to break down and tell him no.... It took him a while to get the idea but he's finally got the message. |
You really shouldn't give her ANYTHING while you're eating. I know it's difficult, believe me. My fiance always feeds my 2 from the table, and then he complains when they beg! Also, I've read that you should never feed your dogs before you eat. You should always wait until after...Good luck! |
i feed her the minute i get home from work, she only gets fed in the morning and then when i arrive so she is hungry, and as for me, sometimes i dont get hungry till 7 or 8, and i just snack or something..she cant wait that long to eat.. gotta try the tough love thingy...huh? |
Good Luck! I hope you get all kinds of good advice. |
You are rewarding her begging by giving her a treat. We either put Loki in his crate while we eat or he is usually pretty good and will lay by my feet (in case I drop something) but if he is actively begging he goes to the crate. You could also practice down stays. I will ask him to stay down for like 5 mins while I eat and then he gets a treat. Usually he tries to get up and I have to ask again several times, but we're working on it. For a while Loki would "beg" by just sitting and staring at me, which I actually reward him for because I'd sure rather he do that then try to jump up next to me and steal my food. So even though he is begging, it's in a way that is acceptable to me so I reward him. It's totally your call! |
I have the same problem with Gucci. Everytime we eat she sits next to us and begs. I have done the same as you, I give her own dry kibble. I guess is my fault that she is a begger. I guess I have to do the "tough love" also. |
Yes you have started this bad behavior. I did the same thing. But I broke KimMee of this by never giving her food or treats in the kitchen or where we eat. If I happen to give her something we have for dinner, it is in her bowl. Your dog is young and you can break this habit. It is just the typical Pavlov's theory of conditioning and response. Maybe you should feed her at the same time you eat or not let her be in the room when you eat dinner. I am sure there are many different ways to break her of this. BUT you have to be FIRM. Good luck |
erin , your right, its like im rewarding her...oh boy im in trouble with this.. i really dont mind it, but this weekend at my brothers house we were eating and lexi jumped up on the booth chair and my brother got mad and said , she dont belong on the table and picked her up and put her behind a gate, well, she was crying and i felt so bad, i let her out after a few minutes , and bam right back on the seat..i put her down said no lexi.. and then got her some food in her dish.... keep the advise coming... i need to be punished myself.. bad mommy /// |
My babies do this too. In fact last week my husband was home for lunch and he made him 2 hotdogs with mustard on them when he went into the living room to eat he bent over to pick up one of the girls toys so that he could throw it to distract them from his food they jumped up and knocked his hotdogs over and now I have a HUGE mustard stain right in the middle of my living room floor. Thank goodness I am getting hardwood floors for Christmas!!! Anyways to answer your question we usually put our girls in our bedroom while we eat. |
Don't beat yourself up about it Gina. Nikko is the same exact way and I am to blame. He sits and stares at us while we eat and I feel so bad for him I usually wind up giving him something (so long as it isn't anything greasy or fatty). Last night he was jumping up and down because we were having rice and I wound up fixing him a tiny plate with a spoonful of plain white rice (bad mommy). I hate to see him beg and I know its wrong to encourage them but I think we have to be strong. These little ones have us wrapped around their little paws!! |
i know isnt it terrible..im thinking about tonight when i go home that i have to be strong and its killing me now... sometimes i wish i had someone else around in my house that could at least be stronger than i am.. im a whimp , she my baby...the only one...i really have to do it... |
Yup, I had to learn the hard way years ago, gave my guy food when I was eating and it was a never ending battle because I didn't have the heart to say no looking into those eyes. Since I learned the hard way it has been very simple with this group. I can even sit on the couch with 10 dogs and not one dog is looking at me or trying to steal food off of my plate. Of course in my house the gang is feed first them me. I agree with feeding them while you eat but the buttom line is Tough Love and it hurts you more than it does the little ones... Good Luck! |
