Dog Stairs? Does anyone here use them? Ralph has started a new habit of jumping of the bed runs around, or goes to get something or to just wander around and then 1 min later he wants back up and does this over and over and over again...do any of you dog stairs? Is it something that I can easily teach him to use? Would love to here your opinions (: |
I have some for the couch~ I bought them at CVS, I have also seen them at Wallgreens~~ I bought them a while ago and had them up, Pnut really didnt like them. Then his LP started acting up and I was forced to train him to use them. It took a little while, he was kinda scared of them LOL. He wouln't use them one by one, It has 3 steps it would step on the first and then jump on top LoL- I started working with him and now he will go one by one, I think he really likes them now~~ |
Oh thats good! I think I want to try them, because Ralph thinks its like a game...i am all nice and comfy in the bed and he's like lets see how many times I can jump down and then make mom pick me up. My bed is a modern platform bed, from ikea so he could easily get back on it but he refuses to do that haha! |

I think they love us picking them up and placing them down over and over again!! Ha Ha. Peanut thinks he is really cool when he goes up and down his stairs LOL. I think Ralph would love them just as much!! I have also seen them at Bed Bath and Beyond. The ones I bought at CVS were like $ 10 so it was a bargin!! |
The best way to train is get something yummy! Place the stairs where you want, ifs its the bed, sit on the bed and get him to go up one by one with treats!! The good thing about the one I have is it is lightweight easy to move around!! |
OMG really? Looks like i am making a trip to CVS this afternoon! |

Good for the price of $10 at CVS - Deluxe Doggy Steps - Epinions.com Some of those reviews say Flimsy! Dont believe that! I have had mine for 2 years and they are perfect condtion! I even sat on the bottom step and nothing happened!! |
I bought mine at bed bath and beyond, it's 4 steps so goes pretty much to the top of the bed, the other set we had were three steps Cooper and fife could use the three, shaffer needed four, my guys had no issue going up, but down they use it about 90% of the time. I rather them not jump off but often Cooper does. I'm glad we have the steps, some use ramps but seems to take up so much room. |
Since Gracie has slept in my bed since day one I had to have steps for her. When she finally got big enough to be able to use steps I got some for the bed. She is quite the busy body sometimes and if she hears a cat moving around some where else she has to go find out what is going on. When my daughter comes home later on at nighttime she has to go greet her. She loves her steps and so do I. She always comes right back to bed after she has taken care of what ever she had to check into. |

For the couch I have the CVS set and they are up and down all the time, also, I can remove them when I don't want them up somewhere!!!! Also, give it a couple weeks, if he don't take to them, take em back! |
Wow thanks for all the advice! I am going to go to CVS in about an hour and get them and i will tell you all how it goes (: I love the idea of sitting on the top of the bed and giving him one treat at a time! (: |

These are what I have for the bed. They come in a four step model also: I think you can get them for less on ebay and other sites. Make sure you check how tall you need them to be. Some steps are only like 14" tall and are not high enough for a bed. |
Ya I prob won't return them, i mean 10 dollars is an awesome price for stairs! |

I was, looking at some at Petsmart, they were way more expensive there. I'm going to run over to CVS this weekend and pick up some if our local store has them |
I have stairs for the girls to get on our bed. I got ours from Petco and I think they were $30 or $40 so $10 is a wwwwaaaaaayyyyyyy better deal!!! I never had to show either girl how to use them. It was just like they knew what to do! Lol. I guess they just really wanted on our bed!! Hee hee. |
My little female would get frightened going from step, up to step....so I got a foam ramp thing that is better for her...she can run up and down it easily, and not worry about loosing her balance as she tries to go up to each step, or down each step as well. It seemed if the steps had been a wider surface, she would have been able to master it without fear of falling. |
All 4 of mine use stairs and ramps exclusively. Cali and Roxie were puppies when I brought them home and I trained them within an hour to only use them. I just used treats to teach them. They have never jumped off the bed or furniture. Pixie was 13 months when she came home and the others trained her right away to use them. Nikki was 14 plus when I brought him in and use to jumping on beds and couches but after a short time he started using them too. The one time pixie walked off the bed because Nikki scared her, she ended up needing LP surgery. She had never shown any issues with her knees prior. So I think it's best to train them to use stairs and ramps. Let us know how it goes. |
One of the other members here posted about the stairs/ramps made by this ebay seller. Definitely more pricey than the CVS steps, but they look very sturdy. I haven't purchased from him yet, but I guess he'll customize the steps or ramps to your exact size requirements and offers some other customizable options. Mojo has some fairly significant LP (back knees are a 3 and a 4) which hasn't caused him much trouble yet, but I plan on ordering some ramps for him just to be proactive. |
Sophie was trying to jump up on the couch and the bed and she just couldn't so I did a lot of searching for the right set of pet stairs and then finally ordered them from GW Little. It's three fleece covered stairs and she took to them right away and I move them to the bedroom at night and she figured that out pretty quickly too. I think they are called Pet Stairz and they were a bit expensive but we love them! Sophie has more freedom to come up and down as she wishes and we don't have to constantly worry about having to pick her up every five minutes. ;) I think we are going to order another set for the bedroom just so that I don't have to keep moving them back and forth. Getting the stairs was one of the best things we ever did! :D |
I have 3 sets of doggy stairs and all mine use them. Once you train them, they use them all the time. I have two plastic ones and one wooden one. The first stairs I got where the cheap plastic ones with fleece covering them for like $10. They aren't very tall. Unfortunately they didn't hold up long because my mom's border collie stepped on the first step and broke it. It works alright for a couch. The second pair I got from Petco for like $50. They are tall plastic with rug on them. They are sturdy and easy to clean. I have a high bed so the first pair of steps wasn't going to work for my bed but these ones come right up to it. My last pair is my favorite. They are wooden with carpet on the stairs. They look great, are sturdy yet lightweight, and they only cost me $25 at Big Lots. I'll have to get a picture sometime as they were a great find for being so nice and costing so little. They are also pretty good height wise. |
I went to CVS and they didn't have them, but I am going to try a few other stores this week! Thanks for all the tips can't wait to get some stairs! I want some wooden ones but I can't find any at a good price, even wholesale I think they are too much so I am going to look at big lots, tj MAxx and marshalls if I can't get the 10 dollar ones at CVS |

I think I paid $19.99. |
The very first set we have for Jack, my husband constructed out of boxes and packing tape.... we upgraded to carpet covered ones and Jack flat out refuses to use them. He would rather jump up on the bed and jump off. We try to get him off the bed so he won't jump, but he's kind of stubborn when it comes to that and again, flat our refuses to use the stairs. We will be getting a new bed this summer and I plan on it being bigger than the one we currently have, so he will have to use the stairs for the new bed (our bed now is pretty low to the ground thank goodness). I always, always, always have my vet check him for LP and so far, so good. |
I have two sets of steps, one for the couch and one for the bedroom, Ella loves them, FLYS up them...makes it easier on their backs. I got mine at Pet Smart for $25, but looks like the CVS steps are the same thing for half the price! The slip cover is washable too!:aimeeyork |
Glad I found this thread. Our vet had an open house Saturday, with lots of door prizes. We received a call today saying we won the doggie steps. Yea :) Can't wait to get them and see if Christabel likes them. |
