Question about puppy coat 4 Attachment(s) I adopted Teddy in February, 2012. He is the World's Sweetest Puppy, and I love him dearly. I was told, when I was inquiring about him, that he had a super thick coat, and that he would be blue and gold as an adult. I picked him up, and honestly, he didn't look anything like I expected him too. However, I love him to pieces, and I'm JUST CURIOUS as to what to expect from his coat. Right now, he's 5 1/2 months old. His puppy coat is VERY wirey and thin feeling. There seems to be a silk coat coming in behind it. Yorkie enthusiasts, please help me! LOL I know Golden Retrievers, not Yorkies. :) Is is possible and/or likely that this thin, wirey coat is here to stay, or will it grow out with a thicker, softer coat? I can find a picture of his momma, but not his daddy. It really doesn't matter (other than I am curious if we will always fight about him going outside to potty in winter, lol) Thanks y'all! I'll attach a few photos so you can see what I'm talking about. |
2 Attachment(s) Hi, I have 2 beautiful girls who have a thin silky coat....As little puppies, their coats were thicker, but slimmed down with age. One of my girls is silver and gold. Some call it blue, I call it silver. The other is gray and gold, but color can change in a Yorkie until they are 3 yrs old. Both coats are GREAT, never mat and a breeze to comb and brush! Bubbles has never had any of her hair cut, and Macayla's I did trim a little, but am letting it grow out. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think the coat type is beautiful! |
1 Attachment(s) Laddy went through that stage I love his coat now. It is super easy to care for. This picture is him now at age 3. |
Rusty's Mom: The picture of your dog standing up...I think that may be what Teddy's new coat will look just like! It's that steel blue color coming up. But OH BOY, the strands are super thin and very silky. Teddy's face isn't wirey at all. That's really soft. In fact, it looks greasy about 2 days post bath, almost like it needs bathed again. :) Nanahas3: Your little Laddy is beautiful!!! I do love his coat! It looks soft but thick! Fingers crossed Teddy's thickens up some. I hate seeing him shiver in winter. We just brought him home, it was cold, and we were housebreaking him. My poor baby did NOT want to go outside. LOL |
Welcome to YT:) Teddy is so cute! I am not sure about Yorkie coats as Georgie is our one and only but I do know Georgie's coat did change as he got older. As far as going outside in the winter Georgie isn't a fan either;) |
He is so darn cute! I am not really good with the coat thing. Callie had very thick puppy hair an it was very hard to keep it tangle free so eventually at her first grooming appointment we shaved the puppy hair off and she still has very very thick hair but it doesn't tangle at all and she is almost 5. |
Hello and welcome, your baby is too cute, Miss Priss has very fine hair too, I get excited as the colors change. |
Teddy looks like my Violet did as a pup. She is two now and has an amazing coat! It is straight and silky. I've never had a mat in it and very few tangles, and we go out in the yard daily. My Hardy is one and his coat us thick straight and coarse. It also doesn't tangle but it is still black and hasn't grown like Violet's did. I think Teddy will have a very nice coat. He's adorable!!! |
He is ADORABLE!! we got a new little man in December...Bentley was 5 months old when we got him....he doesn't have a nice coat either...very thin and straggly. I know yorkies dont' have under coats but the hair close to his skin is/was very cottony feeling and his skin was very dry and flaky...I bought yorkie splash and shine on him...although his coat feels a little better was still straggly looking...so.....I clipped him...hoping to get rid of most of the puppy coat....we will see what happens when it grows back! LOL....LOVE him to pieces just the same! |
Lexie had a rough wirey puppy coat too. There's many threads on here from me asking if her hair will ever change and when she was about 7 months old i noticed thin smooth hair coming in. When it was a few inches long i chopped off all the puppy hair, shes 17 months now and has a beautiful silky coat. I'm sure Teddy will have the same, just give it some time :) |
As adults are yorkies supposed to have a silky coat? I am a little confused I thought the coat should be silky not wirey or cottony. |
Teddy is a real cutie. |
Thank you all for the compliments. Teddy stole my heart the moment I met him. :) Very long story short...My Dad's neighbor has a Yorkie, named Daisy. Daisy's dad died in October, 2010, and she became VERY close with my Dad. Her mommy would leave for work, and *BAM!* out the doggie door she went, headed towards my dads house. (They live at the lake in a country environment.) Every day her and my Dad would hang out all day. My dad was lonely and she missed her daddy. My Dad was very sick himself, so in July and again in December I went and spent several weeks with him, to take care of him, etc. Daisy was always there watching my Dad, and bonding with me and my little boy. She brought me SO MUCH comfort during my Dads final days this past December. :) I begged her Mommy to let me adopt her...to which her reply was not in a million years. :D I decided to get a Yorkie in honor of my Dad, who loved Daisy SO much. I found a breeder close to his house, and about 6 weeks after my Dad passed away, we adopted Teddy. I don't love him for his coat...I love him because he's sweet, gentle, snuggly, and he brings me comfort and reminds me of my Dad. :) He's exactly what I was looking for. I know my Dad led me to him. So many people have already commented on this thread. I just want to say, I've looked at all the attached pics and avatar pics, and your babies are just beautiful! :) |
I have no idea y'all, what kind of coat he SHOULD have. :) I read up on basic yorkie behavior/characteristics and care. I'm still learning, so that's why I came here. :) |
I know what you mean. I come here to learn too. Just like I never knew that yorkies should stay with mom until 12 weeks or after. Where I come from 6 weeks the pup goes to forever home. |
