New Yorkie owner here... My wife and I just bought a 5 month old Yorkie. We picked her up from her former owner last night. -Laila. She seems to be very attached to us already and is getting along fine with our 6 year old (human :P ) According to the owner, she is puppy pad trained (well, said almost) and is crate trained. She did fine in her crate last night and didn't have any accidents and didn't bark/whine, so that is a good start! I had just typed out that she hasn't eaten or had any water since, but she just walked over to her bowl, drank a little and nibbled on a little food - just a little though. Her previous owners must have let her jump on furniture like the sofa, coffee table, etc., so I'm trying to get her to stop that by putting her down and saying "Down" which seems to be working. I am staying home with her for a couple of days to gradually get her used to staying in the bathroom by herself. We'll be gone from around 7:00 - 5:30 during the day M-F. So, should I continue to just use puppy pads until she has that down before transitioning to outside? Will she get confused if I do both? I'm sure I'll have more questions. I'll read up on what I can here. Seems like a nice place :) Thanks for listening! |
Hello and welcome, just give her a little time and there are some here that have their yorkies pad trained and outside trained, good luck and please post some pics. |
Hello and Welcome!! Congrats on your baby! We would love to see pics. You can also get an XPen and make her a little room in there, pee pad, bed, toys, food and water. That why she doesn't have to be locked in the bathroom all day :D I would let her get use to the new house and pads.. Then maybe start training her to go outside.. Is outside where you eventually want her to go? |
ONE NOTE: Down is usually a verbal cue to lay down when obedience training. I would suggest saying OFF instead. Congrats on your new baby. |
congrats on your new baby |
4 Attachment(s) Thanks everyone :) I do eventually want her to potty outside. Here are some pictures - she is hard to take pictures of! Attachment 365390 Attachment 365391 Attachment 365392 Attachment 365393 |

I think that is too long for a puppy to be alone all day. Is someone going to take her out several times during the day? She will not be able to hold it that long if you are going to outside house train her. Puppies can generally only hold it for as many hours as they are old. 5 months would be a max of 5 hrs. I have 4 yorkies- All outdoor trained. When not ill they don't potty in the house but they rarely have to hold it more than 4 hrs during the day but will hold it overnight. Little dog = Little bladder. Best wishes with the new addition. |
I thought little dogs belonged on the couch next to you. LOL. I have a small blanket that my little shih tzu lays on so she can be next to me, rather than way down on the floor. I keep her bathed so she is not dirty and does not shed. Yorkies do not shed either. Good luck with your pup. He is so cute. |
be sure to invest in stairs so she doesnt hurt herself.......cause honestly yorkies are love bugs and will want to be where you are...coach...and so on. mine both sleep with me and i wouldnt have it anyother way. and i do think that is a long time for your baby to be alone all day but just my opinion. good luck and congrats on your new baby she is adorable. |
aaaw, she is adorable... |
10 hours is way to long for her to have to hold it so I would suggest to keep her using the pee pads. I get not wanting her on the coffee table but why don't you want her on the sofa? If the jumping scares you I would get stairs that ways he can still get on the sofa. Yorkies don't shed so shes not going to get hair all over it. |
What a sweetheart.. and looks like she'll have a beautiful silky coat too |
