Yeah, our bathroom is pretty big and has a block glass window, so there is plenty of light. And the toilet is in an enclosed room inside.

I am leaning towards some kind of pen for the kitchen as well since our living room and kitchen are open to each other. What size pen should I be looking into? Also, she can jump very high, so I'll have to get something tall, too.

If you are going to keep her in the bathroom I would get a gate to secure her in there rather than shut her in there with the door. That way she won't feel so totally isolated from everything. You are leaving her alone for a major part of the day and it would not be good to have her totally shut off from everything for that long. I agree it would be good if you had someone who could come in and let her out at least once during the day. You have very few hours during the day to work on her training so you have your work cut out for you. Since she is using a pee pad for the major part of the day you are going to have to spend most of your time outside to get her to learn to go outside as well.

If you want her trained to go outside you need to be training her right now. Leave the puppy pads down for when you are away but when you are home you need to be working on outside training. As it is you are already having to re-train since she was already pee pad trained. It's kind of hard to reverse something that she is already used to doing so you are going to be spending a lot of time outside to have her get the idea that you want her to go out there only. Remember that Yorkies tend to have small bladders and have to go more often then a regular sized dog.

I can understand you not wanting her on the tables but most little dogs want to be lap dogs so you may be fighting quite a battle to keep her off the furniture. Does she have her own bed? My little one was never able to get on the coffee table so yours must be quite a jumper.

Many stores sell frames for the pee pads if you don't already have one.

Welcome and congrats she's a cutie pie:) I think one of the best investments for anyone owned by a Yorkie is steps. I am not sure if you are going to let her on the furniture which you might say no now and change your mind;) But steps are great for them. I have learned not to let Georgie jump much and really he doesn't want to. I would also suggest allowing her to have the run of the kitchen. While your bathroom would work I think the kitchen would give her more room and she would adjust better. Good luck and keep us posted:D

Welcome to YorkieTalk and congratulations on your puppy. I have to say though, I doubt keeping her off the furniture will last very long... These little guys want to be with their people, and you are going to be smitten with her. Is there a reason that she's not allowed on the furniture?

I have already reconsidered :P

One reason is she tends to go at my daughters face. She's not used to dogs and she is just trying to lick her, but she gets scared. She will get used to it :)

Another thing is she keeps trying to hide her food and chewed up bones in it. :lol: So funny.

She is so cute!

I have a little Yorkie mix and she will hold her bladder until she has a chance to go outside. We work full days also. It takes some time, but some can be taught to hold for awhile, while others can only hold for a wee bit. Good luck and keep posting pictures! They are kinda fast to capture aren't they! :p

Yuri started out on puppy pads, and only goes outside now. I slowly moved his pad a few inches everyday til it was outside where I wanted him to go then ditched the pad. You have to watch them pretty close and run them out to the pad, for a little while after moving it outside before they get the idea, but it worked for us :) it didn't take long for him to start telling us he wanted out. He seems to prefer it outside

You have to speak Yuri to understand when he wants out. I plan to get Yumi a hanging bell and try ringing the bell when I take her out (they are supposed to learn to ring the bell when they need to go out), but we'll probably be puppy pad training for a while yet, there are too many loose dogs here to start outside before she has finished her shots. With my luck she'll just think it's a cool toy :P

Yumi is my 1st yorkie but I've heard they are really hard to potty train, so good luck :D

Thought I would post a little update since it's been a few days :)

Laila is starting to fit in just like if she had been with us all of her life. She is now allowed on the furniture, but has to get down when we want her to, of course. She is starting to listen to us about getting on the end tables, so she is doing a good job at that.

We are still having some potty training issues with her wanting to go on the carpet, so we've had to adjust by keeping the doors closed all of the time. She will usually go on the pad, but misses by a foot or so when she poops and I can't seem to catch her in the act.

Today she graduated to the living room / kitchen area from being locked in the bathroom. We have a cam in the house where we can watch her and she seems much happier now. She had started pacing a lot in the bathroom, so we decided to give her a chance in the bigger part of the house. So far today she has mostly stayed in her crate.

I have to bring her to the vet today to get checked out and to get caught up on her shots. Then on Saturday, it's off to PetSmart beginner training :)

Speaking of PetSmart, we brought her in there on Saturday morning and she was a nightmare. She's only 4 lbs and I could hardly hold on to her. She was barking, yelping, etc at all of the other animals in there. People didn't seem to bother her as much, though. The trainer said we can fix that, so here's to hoping!

Don't be surprised if it takes a while to train her. It took a few weeks to train Dink, but he's awesome at it now.
The furniture thing is your preference,but remember that Yorkies do not shed. Maybe you can train her to only come up on the furniture if she is invited.

You may want to put down a few pads as I notice when Ted goes No. 2 he seems to walk forward as he's relieving causing him to miss the pad...in his little mind, he did aim for the pad. Good luck.
