Would your or do you vaccinate against Leptospirosis? Hello everyone. I took Jack to the vet yesterday to make sure he is up to date on his shots, etc. as we are taking him on vacation and I wanted to make sure he doesn't pick up anything while we are on vacation. Our vet mentioned the Leptospirosis vaccine and said that they had seen one case of it last year. I am having a tough time deciding whether this is something that I should have Jack get or not. So I just wanted to know your thoughts on this? Thanks! |
I'm thinking no, it's a higher risk for the side effects of the shot as apposed to contracting lepto., so I've been told repeatedly. I am curious as to what others do also! |
No, I don't. Ask your vet how many dogs he has seen that haven't had it. Don't let your pup drink out of rain puddles or gullies on walks can help prevent it. |
My mom had a goat die from Lepto so I get Callie vaccinated. |
Not us, Ziva had a terrible reaction. My 3 are pretty much limited to our property- I'll take my chances. |
We are at our cabin every weekend from April to October. I get this shot every year for him. He's never had a reaction. |
Copper my Chiweenie had a massive reaction from it, so I don't get any of my 4 vaccinated. They are only in my yard or my Mom's and we are in the city, so I feel safe not getting it for them. |
We've never gotten it. The breeder marked her record "no lepto" and I am scared of the reaction. I don't plan on getting it, either. |
Mine DO NOT get it. I had one of mine almost die from a reaction to it. It is marked in my file No Lepto. |
After discussing with my vet, I was a bit worried about the reaction. She said years ago almost all of the smaller breeds (Yorkies, Chihuahuas, teacup poodles) had a reaction to it, so the vets quit recommending and the owners of small breeds obviously shied away from the vaccine. She said, however, there have been advances in medicine over the years so the reactions are seen less frequently. She also said that the cases of Lepto are on the rise. Although we live in "the City of Macedonia" (not your typical downtown city like New York or Cleveland) we do have plenty of wild animals that come into the yard. I have seen raccoon, skunks, opossum, squirrels (they are everywhere aren't they?) and even deer (yes, I'm paranoid about deer ticks too... LOL) and the yard does have plenty of standing water - ever since they built the city center behind our house, our drainage has gone downhill... anyway, thank you all for your comments. For now, I am not going to get him vaccinated against it - if our lifestyles ever change, I will revisit the idea. Thank you all again for your thoughts! |
I've never gotten it for them, and hope I won't have to. If it really was endemic in my area...I suppose I'd have to reconsider...but I'd really rather not. |
My girl had a severe reaction to it, so she will never get it again. Stil though, my 15 pound (non-yorkie) boy will get it yearly. I personally wouldn't give it to tiny dogs without a very good reason. Risk assessment from the disease and from the vaccine is all you can do. Lepto is a very serious problem in Michigan. If I had an almost solely indoor tiny dog, I probably wouldn't. If we liked to play outside, then yes I probably would. Reaction rate may be better, but it's definitely still somewhat common. Some strains of the disease and the treatment for it, including possible isolation, are a major concern to me though. The vaccine doesn't cover all strains and the duration of immunity is in question, but my dogs getting a strain like icterohemorrhagica isn't something I want them to go through. |

I do not get it and if I EVER had to, like I tell ALL my parents, Have a shot of Benadryl 15 minutes prior to the shot, and then hang around the vet office for at least 20 - 30 minutes after the shot. That is the ONLY way I would ever let my babies get that shot, and ONLY IF IT BECOMES EPIDEMIC IN MY AREA! Risk outweighs the probability of getting the disease for my babies....and like Ellie May said, "Reaction rates are still common, vaccine doesnt cover all strains, duration of immunity is questionable" (like maybe only 6 months). |
No lepto for mine either.. |
I do.. I don't want to take any chances! |
Nope. Jackson (who is not a teeny boy, he is 16lbs now, was 6lbs at the time he got it) had a very bad reaction so never again. But I'm very minimal vaccine anyways so wouldn't get it even if he didn't have a reaction. We are outside all the time and he travels with us and is in the woods, creeks, water, etc, and no problems. He most likely will not be vaccinated ever again for anything but rabies, at most he'd get one more booster of distemper and parvo but that's it and still questionable. Totally don't believe all these vaccines are necessary (and lots of research is being done on it, as well, who also don't think so). |
My boys get the lepto shot. It's a problem here, and thankfully they've never had a reaction to it. |
Yes we vaccinate for lepto. I was extremely relunctant to do so when I got ZoE last year. Our vet recommended it and also vaccinates his own dogs (including his yorkie) for it. He gives benadryl at the start of the exam and then vaccinates at the end. Michigan State warns of leptospirosis outbreak around Detroit - DVM |
We don't do lepto. We don't live in a high risk area, so I have chosen to opt out with my two. |
No lepto for my two boys. It's a chance I don't want to take. |
We live in an area that has a leptospirosis risk. We have previously vaccinated our older dogs but stopped. My vets over the years have been of differing opinions, with all but my current veterinarian being on the side of vaccination. Our youngest dog has never and will never be vaccinated against it. |
Lepto Vacine NO. Luci had one just screamed for hours called vet said to give baby aspirin. Fon my daughters yorkie Gunner had one the day Luci got hers. Thank god we were still at the vets Little Gunner went limp vet gave him a shot to counter act it. Plus she had to pay for that shot. They made us wait an hour before we could leave. NO MORE LEPTO shots for us. |
I would feel horrible if he got something bad and I could have done something to prevent it. On the other hand I would feel terrible if he had a horrible reaction and the shot was the cause of it. Everyone has to do what they feel is the best for their babies. |

When I got Joey, his breeder made me sign a paper saying that I would never give the Lepo shot to Joey, and she wanted to make sure my vet saw what I signed, so I took the contract to him. No worries, because he doesn't give it anyway, but unless you live in a place where there is such a high risk, I would not do it. |
Mine are vaccinated against it. |
Nope.. Gizmo was really lethargic when he got it last year so i refuse to get it again. I also try and get his shots staggered... I don’t give him everything at once because it’s too overwhelming to his immune system. A book I read called Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for dogs and cats is a great book to read if you have the time. It talks about how it’s great if you can get single-disease vaccine done instead of multiple one such as DHLPP, Bordetella, Rabies, Lyme Disease, Brucellosis. Obviously it’s not cost effective for vets to carry single-disease vaccines so you have to find a vet that does carry them. He also suggests not getting annual boosters because there has never been scientific justification for yearly boosters. He actually advises against any further vaccinations after the initial series. When it comes time for Gizmos shots I will probably run a titer test and see what antibodies are present. Its more $ than just vaccinating but much safer. |
No lepto vaccine for Louie. I do not want to take the chance. |
Thanks everyone for your input/stories, etc. I don't think I will get him vaccinated. My vet is really good about staggering his shots due to his size and never does too many at one time and again, she said the Lepto was entirely my choice. We just keep a close eye on him when we are near puddles of water and make sure he doesn't drink any. If it does become epidemic in our area (as it seems to be with my Michigan neighbors) then I will probably have him vaccinated, but for now, I'm not going to get it. |
I did give the Lepto to Tink. We live in a very rural area and our property is mostly wooded with lots of wildlife. Tink also goes all kinds of places with me. I can do my best to not let her lick things or drink from puddles but it only takes a second. We stayed at the vet for a while after she got the shot and Tink did fine. No problems at all. |
