Why Breed Your Pet? I have always wondered this but never had the guts to ask the question but here goes.... If it is so horrible to consider "breeding for profit" and you do not show your dogs, then WHY would anyone breed their female dog knowing the risks to her life? Apparently yorkies are one of the most difficult dogs to breed. I just cannot figure this out except that people do it not knowing the risks or they are not being honest about doing it make money. Show breeders will always say they are trying to produce the perfect yorkie (whatever that is) which I sort of have a problem with on ethical grounds (it's kind of like saying they are trying to playing God with the lives of dogs in my opinion). I totally understand being obsessed with a HOBBY but this hobby involves living creatures which makes it a very serious hobby , not to be taken lightly. I personally see nothing wrong with making money as long as proper and exceptional care is shown the dogs and by that I mean love and attention, not just medical care. But a lot of people seem to be of the opinion that if you breed for profit then you are inherently a BAD breeder. |
LOL ....I already see where this one is going...Should we just ask it to be locked now or wait for the moderators ? I've never seen any one say a breeder who made money is a 'bad' breeder - that's just silly and where did THAT come from ? Talk about a bait post ! |
I like NEVER post here any more but how I agree with Villette ... where is this going to lead to?!! Shame that a pleasant foum is brought down to this!!! :thumbdown |
:thumbs_do Personally, in my opinion, I see this as thread hopping with the same topic once again. This forum has not had this problem for about 2 months. It seems to have popped up again this week. |
I say that even if there is a small profit, it's likely there is a profit. But I know what you mean when you constantly hear, those prices are outrageous, oh thats a bad breeder cause that breeder is breeding for the money! What may seem like a big price to someone may not be to another person. I see nothing wrong with there being a profit, as long as the dogs are being cared for as you say and medically. I think sometimes it seems too weird to think they earn nothing from it, why do it. Yea I'm sure its also done cause they love the breed. JMO |
Its just common sense that the breeders have to be making some profit on it or why do it??? I dont think that breeders who make a profit are in it just for the money. The only exception to that is the breeder who puts their tiny yorkie at risk to breed and sell the pups at extreme prices but thats a whole different subject. |

Why don't you ask the breeders that you purchased your dogs from this question- you have stated in the past they do not show. Admin you know where this thread is going. IMO this is just a thread trying to start a fight. I ask that admin close this thread. |
Well, I am going to take the jump. Somebody slap me  I appreciate show breeders. Not all, but some actually do this to keep the breed pure and beautiful. A Yorkie is a Yorkie b/c of the standards that showing encourages. I think some breeders breed their pets because they love the breed and want to participate in such a rewarding program...even if they don't care about showing. Providing high quality pets to others is a service that I admire. And I don't care if people make a profit from breeding but I do care if profit is their main or only motivation. Everyone can have their own opinion about this but we should all consider what practices we are going to support. How does it affect the overall Yorkie population? How does it affect less informed people who go out and make quick puppy buying decicions? Puppy Mills are the worst case but there are many bad breeding programs that only lead to unhealthy dogs or those with less Yorkieness. Now...going to duck in the closet for awhile. |
I encourage all to not bite on this one. IMO this thread is nothing but a problem waiting to happen- ladies and gents you are being baited once again. I encourage all to not get caught up and to ignore. |

In my limited knowledge of breeding......(my MIL bred Great Pyranees for many, many years) Anyway (IMO) breeding is very expensive as it is and so in order to make a profit they'd have to charge outrageous prices.....like more than just the medical costs and time taken off of work to care for the mom and puppies, which is great to begin with. I've been told by breeders that it HAS TO BE a hobby b/c at best they hope to break even when everything is said and done. And if people are breeding strictly for profit, that would mean skimping out on medical bills, checkups, etc (probably) and having lots of dogs JUST for breeding (not for love) and then that would become a puppy mill more than anything. And we ALL know how we feel about PUPPY MILLS  :thumbdown |
Sorry guys, I didn't mean to get involved in the debate. But so far it's been friendly discussion, right? I think threads should be locked if they go downhill but so far people have been nice, I think. But it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch, I guess. |

Well I used to be on here all the time about a 10 months ago then all of a sudden things went "ugly" and I thought to myself why bother- but as I have slowed doen at work I started coming back about a week ago- I hope I am not sorry- YT in my opine is supposed to be a community to help each other and share stories and such- not hurt or attack- ins't there enough of that in the world anyway- My boys are one of my sources of joy- they are true friends and I enjoy them- So far while the question is a bit strange it appears no one has taken it to the level it could go- I hope tat does not happen- I come here to get away from all the "crap" in life and want to enjoy my "visit"- might have rose colored galsses on but that is my reason to be here--- |
in MY opinion, if you have dogs with genetic problems, NOT standard, with some defects you should NEVER EVER breed them. No matter, will you make profit or not. The only beautiful standard dogs should be breeding. I don't care if somebody makes good money. If they offer high quality, healthy pups, why not? But it seems like only BYB and PM make a really good profit. Of course, I am against them. I like YTCA and their point of view. |
