Fake Grass Pad vs Pee Pads So, I wanted to see if anyone has ever tried to use one of those fake grass pee pads to help potty train their pup. I have potty trained many a dog in my life, but Peppermint has broken me. lol. she goes on pee pads about 85% of the time and the rest of the time she goes randomly on the carpet. moving from a house with hard wood to a fully carpeted apartment didn't help! lol. i bought a steam cleaner and it isn't a huge stress in my life or anything. but i was just wondering if anyone has tried to use one of those grass pee pads and if pups usually take to those better than pee pads? i figure since it is the texture of grass and much different than the carpet, it might help distiguish between the carpet and the pad much better and help her figure out that that is the area to use? i don't need potty training tips as i have read all the books, successfully trained many other dogs and have really tried everything...she does get it... but only 85% of the time. haha. just looking for info/advice/suggestions on the grass pee pads. any brands that people prefer? Thanks! |
I can tell you from my own experience that my boy did not take to the grass pads or the potty pads. The grass pad he liked as a bed and the potty pads he did not tell the difference between those and carpet. So i got him the rascal dog litterbox. Wow , he is doing awesome. He is 6 months and i never thought i would make any progress till i found this box. It uses a grate system instead of grass or pads. Check it out.... Well, when I got Charlee (rescue) I was told she was pee pad trained (they thought) however; in her foster home, I noticed both she and another puppy were "carpet" trained :) As you know, this is always a difficult situation, no matter how hard you clean. I didn't have success with the pee pads, but I have with the Potty Park (with fake grass). At first I kept it in the apartment, but no matter what they say, I can smell it...so it is out on the balcony...she asks to go out, and out she goes. In the summer, I have a cat door in my screen and she has open access. Then she is 100% reliable. In the winter, like now, she is 95%, because if she needs to go through the night, she is just as happy with the carpet by the door...luckily enough though it only seems to be poos...so it is a little easier to keep clean. try this. The ONLY disposable Dog Potty / Puppy Toilet on the market. Finally say goodbye to Pee Pads and synthetic grass dog toilets. we did. the grass was fantastic. unfortunately Pluto is a mover when he um... ya know and we ended up cancling but they easily cancled and gave us a credit. good customer service and i would still try it again with another pup. |

I don't know about the grass. I just know it did not sound like fun having to clean the fake grass and the tray under it. Gracie went through a period when she would pee next to the pee pad after she had already used it a couple of times. I guess she doesn't like the idea of getting near the pad once she has used it twice even if they where she went is on the other end.:rolleyes: Anyway, I started giving her treats every time she did go on the pad and she started being much better at doing it right. I also started changing the pad more often. She may be a dog but she is sure particular. I know if your gone during the day that is not always an option. They do sell liquid that you can put on the pee pad that is supposed to have a stronger attractant in it. I have a neighbor who uses a littler box for her little dog and it seems to work fine. I can't do it because we have cats. Hope Peppermint decides to cooperate soon.:xfingers: I think they use a liquid attractant for the fake grass, too. |

Anyone with the grass mats, an easy way to clean them is to use a bucket of hot water with detergent and bleach..just pour it over the mat and the under area a couple of times,,then to rinse just fill the bucket a couple of times with clean water and pour over them...this works great if you don't have a water hose..I do but like to use the bucket method for cleaning and on the final wash and rinse I hang it on the banister and pour the water over the top and this helps with the drying too. I hope this helps you with the cleaning..Prissy uses her really well, I have a spare mat too and she uses it while the other is drying. |
I have two that like the fake grass and two that like the pads...so I have both set up...works well for me. I wash the grass every other day with bleach and then let it air dry. |
I have the Purina Second Nature Litter Box, but I have peepee pads in it. I also bought a Diaper Genie for the used pads and I have zero smell in my place. I haven't tried it with the litter, but I have seen bags of the litter for sale at Petco. Purina secondnature Housetraining Solution |

Have your tried buying Sod from a garden store? It seems like that is what the above products are. |
What about litterbox training? How To Litter Box Train Your Dog I never taught mine but Cozy and Roxy will use the actual kitty littr box if they have access to it. I have to laugh when I see it. Otherwise they are outdoor trained. |

From my experience, I like the grass pad better, I tried the pee pads and lola just ignored them all the time. when i first got the grass pad she used to use it as a bed :p but eventually she understood that it was made for her to pee on it. ( it takes times just like any other method) the only bad side is the cleaning thing, it takes time to clean it but besides that I just love the grass pad. About the texture, i don't think it helps the dog know better the difference between the grass and the carpet. Lola is going to be 2 and she still WILL pee on a carpet because she feels it's grass :eek: |
