This is a new adventure for us. I have loved canines all my life and have always had a forever furry friend, but like I said, I have a lot to learn. We adopted him about two weeks ago. Already we are having problems. He is scheduled for dental surgery in 10 days:confused: His previouse owner said she never gave him chew bones or hard treats, he has never worn a collar because she walked him in a stroller and he wore a belly band (I have never seen or heard of it before) all the time, so he had diaper rash and was never house broken. I have my work cut out for me ..right? |
Owned by a Yorkie? No ! Really? :p Hee Hee...aren't we all !!! Get used to it!!! It's part of the fun! ;)
As for the work, when there is so much to teach them, I just
start by doing everything as consistently as possible...rather than working on specific 'formal' training for more than one command at a time...and practice, practice, practice 'cuz repetition and consistence are key elements...treats, toys, love help, too, depending on what he likes. You have to condition yourself as well as conditioning them. But... Yorkies are so smart that I don't think you'll find it that troublesome, especially after the first command ("trick") is learned.
Brody was 14 months old when I got him and he hadn't been taught a thing. What he knows now amazes me, even though I've watched, taught, and helped him learn it. The things I worked on were, of course, getting a regular outside potty routine going, and getting him to reliably "Sit" on command...you could see the little light go on when he "got it" and realized he'd learned a "trick"...he soooooo wanted to do more, and more, and more, and he is doing absolutely wonderfully with both...he's been with us for 10 months now, and Mia's been with us for 7 months...she was 17 months old when we got her.
Mia was better trained...or maybe just better
at some things...like coming when called and staying with us...walking on a lead she definitely had experience with, and she was crate trained, although I do not crate her during the day.
I truly believe you will have so much fun with your new baby that none of it will seem like work...just love !!! :D
Hope everything goes well with his dental, and congratulations!
