Bread/Panettone DANGERS Hmmm, speaking of toxic to dogs...my girlfriend Cocker/bichon mix (not purposely bred this way!) weight is 22lbs. got into a leftover stocking stuffer this morning...Panettone 3.5oz. ate the whole thing (she found the wrapper on the floor), he was shaking, panting and crying when she found him. Rushed him to the vets, xrays revealed the panettone bread had formed a ball and became a clump in his stomach that he couldn't digest and was causing a serious blockage. He is currently in surgery...... She called me because the vet told her that regular bread could cause this, and that they have seen it many, many, times. She called her vet when they opened and her vet went to see xrays etc., and agreed with the emergency vet. Will keep you posted. Say a prayer for Petey... __________________ |
Not too familiar with that bread...doesn't it have raisins in it? |
Ive heard dough can do that but not bread thats already been baked. Did he mean dough |
No Chachi it was a fully prepared 3.5oz Panettone bread. It is a heavy bread and apparently became like dough in his belly. She said the xray showed a clump...he was in pain and its just sitting there and can't be digested or passed in its current state. I remember my Shine (black lab) brother to Moon, ate a loaf of bread off my table, he was sick as anything but I didn't have to take him to vets. Panettone also has raisins and other fruit pieces in it. Petey is a precious little guy, I really hope hes ok. http://www.amigofoods.com/foorpa26oz7g.html |
That is interesting! I wouldnt think bread could rise anymore after its cooked so who knew. Thanks for the warning. I hope Petey recovers quickly and without incident |

???? It has raisins in it...???? :hands: |
I wish all the best for Petey. Thank you for sharing about Panettone and regular bread. I didn't know bread can cause such problems. I don't feed Tatiana bread, but it's very good to know just for my information. |
The raisins alone are toxic to dogs....wonder if the raisins are causing the majority of problems? I have not experienced issues with bread being consumed by dogs....but they have not eaten a bunch of it at one time..... |
I never realized bread could do this, makes sense though! |
I hope the little guy has a smooth recovery. I'm sure she feels awful.:( |
I will say a prayer for Petey! I hope the surgery goes well! |
Good luck. Hope it is removed safely. |
I hope Petey heals up quickly! Its great that you were able to get him to the vet do soon. |
Checking in to see how Petey is doing,,thanks for the info on the hazards of the bread. |
