Bread/Panettone DANGERS Hmmm, speaking of toxic to dogs...my girlfriend Cocker/bichon mix (not purposely bred this way!) weight is 22lbs. got into a leftover stocking stuffer this morning...Panettone 3.5oz. ate the whole thing (she found the wrapper on the floor), he was shaking, panting and crying when she found him. Rushed him to the vets, xrays revealed the panettone bread had formed a ball and became a clump in his stomach that he couldn't digest and was causing a serious blockage. He is currently in surgery...... She called me because the vet told her that regular bread could cause this, and that they have seen it many, many, times. She called her vet when they opened and her vet went to see xrays etc., and agreed with the emergency vet. Will keep you posted. Say a prayer for Petey... __________________ |
Not too familiar with that bread...doesn't it have raisins in it? |
Ive heard dough can do that but not bread thats already been baked. Did he mean dough |
No Chachi it was a fully prepared 3.5oz Panettone bread. It is a heavy bread and apparently became like dough in his belly. She said the xray showed a clump...he was in pain and its just sitting there and can't be digested or passed in its current state. I remember my Shine (black lab) brother to Moon, ate a loaf of bread off my table, he was sick as anything but I didn't have to take him to vets. Panettone also has raisins and other fruit pieces in it. Petey is a precious little guy, I really hope hes ok. http://www.amigofoods.com/foorpa26oz7g.html |
That is interesting! I wouldnt think bread could rise anymore after its cooked so who knew. Thanks for the warning. I hope Petey recovers quickly and without incident |

???? It has raisins in it...???? :hands: |
I wish all the best for Petey. Thank you for sharing about Panettone and regular bread. I didn't know bread can cause such problems. I don't feed Tatiana bread, but it's very good to know just for my information. |
The raisins alone are toxic to dogs....wonder if the raisins are causing the majority of problems? I have not experienced issues with bread being consumed by dogs....but they have not eaten a bunch of it at one time..... |
I never realized bread could do this, makes sense though! |
I hope the little guy has a smooth recovery. I'm sure she feels awful.:( |
I will say a prayer for Petey! I hope the surgery goes well! |
Good luck. Hope it is removed safely. |
I hope Petey heals up quickly! Its great that you were able to get him to the vet do soon. |
Checking in to see how Petey is doing,,thanks for the info on the hazards of the bread. |
I have never heard of bread being an issue. Our vet told me to feed ZoE bread, after she had gotten into some Kentucky Fried Chicken that a kid visiting had left sitting out on an end table. It's supposed to help pass sharp objects, like cooked chicken bones. I hope Petey makes a full recovery :) |
Petey is doing OK, not great, so far. He had to be transported from the Emergency Vets to his regular vet and he remains there. I went with my friend to visit him yesterday, it was patheticly sad to see him like this. Vet said it was NOT the raisins, but the bread had become a clump of gooey dough in his belly that couldn't be passed, there were not many raisins but they were still intact....the vet said that every animal is different from the other, whats good for one is not for another etc., but she firmly believes dogs should not eat bread and especially not Panettone bread. The clump was only in his belly for a few hours when they took it out so the raisins didn't have much time to cause damage. I admit that on occasion I give mini and mia a lil piece of my sandwich etc., but I won't again, just not worth it to me. So very sad. As I'm typing this my friend just called and said Petey took a turn for the worse that she was headed over there. Will keep me posted. AWWWW |
My dogs never get a lot of bread, but they do get some...not Panettone bread, tho, and I make most of my bread. When I was a kid, a med-sized dog, Princess, ate 3 loaves of bread dough that had just thawed but not risen. She was very 'drunk' and uncomfortable when it started rising in her belly. My parents took turns all night walking her around in the house, and outside, to keep her awake and moving around. She came thru it fine, but mom was extra careful when thawing the 3-packs of frozen bread dough. There was no such thing as an emergency vet back then, so maybe she was just super lucky. She would eat anything...ate half a can from a can of peas once, too...looked like it'd been shot up until half blew off. Great dog, tho. :D I hope Petey is okay. All our best for his recovery. :hands: |
