Rawhide chews My baby is 9 weeks old.My breeder said not to let him have rawhide chews.To me that would cut down on him chewing everything else up.Anyone know any reasons why they shouldn't chew them? |
Rawhide does not digest in their system. Also it is high risk for choking. I would do Bully sticks, Texas Toothpicks or Himalayan chews. All natural and it breaks up! Contamination. As with pet toys,rawhide chews can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals. And, as with other pet (or human) foods, Salmonella or E. coli contamination are possible. Even humans can be at risk when coming into contact with these bacteria on rawhide treats. Digestive irritation. Some dogs are simply sensitive or allergic to rawhide or other substances used in their manufacture. This can cause problems, including diarrhea. Choking or blockages. Rawhide bones and other edible chews can pose a choking and blockage risk. In fact, this is a much bigger risk than contamination or digestive irritation. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Sometimes a vet can remove these pieces fairly easily through the throat. But sometimes open surgery is needed to remove them. If it isn’t resolved, a blockage can lead to death. |
Joey uses bullysticks they are 100% digestible. Rawhide isn't 100% digestible, sometimes a dog will bite off more than he can chew and swallow it, and it's possible to get lodged in the intestines or even throat. My foster isn't interested in bully sticks, he only uses rawhide and he only has some while I'm holding him so I know he can't swallow big chunks. They sell the skinny strips, I wouldn’t recommend the ones with chicken wrapped, because the chicken is more likely to hold bacteria. I hold on one end and he chews the other, he never gets off a big piece, he mainly gnaws on it and I think it's good for his teeth. Joey does the same thing with the bully stick, and he wants me to hold him while he chewing on it. Main thing is don't use them unsupervised, and throw out the pieces when they are at least 3 inches long, so dog won't be tempted to swallow it whole. I think a chewing stick is very important, especially when they are puppies and are teething. Also some non-edible chews are good to have and teething toys for dogs. |
I would not feed rawhides... They can break off and they can choke on them. I give my two bully sticks and they LOVE them. They are digestible and I take them away before they get too short and haven't had any problems. |
Because they are digestable. I give dentasticks and they help with teeth health also |
rawhide can upset their tummies and give them diarherra. We give bully sticks and watch them closely as Maggie is a chewer. We've also given denta sticks and hymalian chews. |

I must add to the list of things good for them to chew would be antlers. They are safe, healthy and are from deer and elk who seasonally shed them. |
I heard greenies are good once he reach adult. They come in a teenie size |
