Oh I see. So it's the fact that they're gnawing on them that gets the tarter off. Maybe I'll just break them into quarter sizes. He poops like 2-3 times a day. I probably won't let him eat these until he gets a bit older anyways |

I've gotten to the point that Tibbe lays in my lap and I hold one end of the chewie as he chews. That way I can really see if he is biting off a big portion to try to swallow, etc. And he is okay with my holding it for him. I do so enjoy watching him enjoy his chew - he gets such big fun and apparent satisfaction from it. Occasionally I will let him take a new one and move down to the end of the couch and chew a good while but once he get far enough along to start biting it through or trying to swallow, I move in and turn the other end to his mouth. He usually is so unhappy with that he just stops. But he get a bit of chew-fun on his own that way. Sounds fanatical and it is but the Jilly experience scare the absolute Willie's out of me and never want to see a dog ever have to go through what she did and coming so very near to losing her so I'm a fanatic. |
I have been giving Gracie bully sticks since she was 6 months old. She just needs to chew sometimes and if I don't have them for her she will go and find things she should not chew. I get her the 12" regular size. They are about as long as she is. She cannot bite a piece off but does gum up the end quite a bit. I throw them away when they get to be about 3". Have never had a problem but they should be taken away before they get to the point that they can fit in the mouth. Rawhide will break off and does not digest well. I think they should be taken off the market, especially the ones that are shaped like bones. The ends come off and can cause a dog to choke or be stuck in the stomach. |
i give meesha small tightly twisted rawhide sticks, it takes her weeks to eat one because of the way its twisted, she just loves them, i watch her closley when she eats them though, its the only kind of bone she'll chew on so far,and sometimes its nice to have her sit quietly and eat them because shes a ball of energy, so i haven't seen a problem with them yet, poops fine with them..i could see it she was eating alot of them but 1 stick that takes her weeks to eat prob wont do any harm, thats the only thing rawhide i will ever give her though..not sure if i will giver them to her when she loses her baby teeth because i heard rawhide causes tartar buildup? and i want to keep her adult teeth clean |
