Help me choose my puppy! I am having the HARDEST time picking our new yorkie puppy. We have found a breeder and have gone to see the puppies 2 times now. The litter has 4 boys and one girl and both times the girl and one boy have stood out to us. Not only that but both of them also liked us and ran to us every chance they got while the other 3 puppies acted afraid of us and stayed away. Now we are stuck on which one to get. We were hoping only one of them would like us which would make our decision much easier :) The ONLY thing holding me back from getting the girl is her watery eyes. I noticed the first time we saw her at 6 weeks that they were very watery while the other puppies seemed dry. Then again at 8 weeks she had watery tear stained eyes and the other boy we liked had perfectly dry eyes. Here are the 2 puppies just before 7 weeks old. The girl is on the right. puppies | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Here they are at 8 weeks old with the girl on the left pic1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Here is an up close of the girl and her eyes: girl2 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! And one of the boy just for comparison: boy | Flickr - Photo Sharing! So here are the pros and cons of each puppy. Female Pros - We think she is the cuter yorkie and will probably be the better looking one as an adult as well. She is fluffier and her fur seems like it will be softer/fluffier instead of straight or wirey. She weighs 1 lb. 7.3 oz at 8 weeks old which I believe charts out at 4 1/2 lbs. She was a very fun puppy and loved to run around and play, but this also meaned she liked to bite. Female Cons - Watery eyes. I'm really worried this will be a permanent problem that might lead to other more serious problems. She is a little too rambunctious for my daughter who does not like to be bitten lol. Male Pros - He was a total sweetheart! The puppies were all in a little play yard and whenever I would walk to one side of the play yard he ran as fast as he could to come over to me and when I put my hands inside the pen he would instantly lick them and try his hardest to climb up into them. I seriously walked to either side about 15 times and it never failed, he always came to me while the other puppies ignored me. He had quite a bit of white on his chest and 2 back feet which we LOVED. They are parti gene carriers. He barely ever tried to bite me at all and if he did it was very gentle. Male Cons - You could already tell that his hair was going to be more wirey instead of fluffy. Having a boy dog makes me a little nervous because of marking so I've always owned girls. Anyways as you can see I will NEVER make my decision and need help! Is the watery eyes a deal breaker, should I go with the one that has perfectly dry eyes or is this something that will most likely go away and should not influence our decision? Which would you choose?? |
Well, hate to say this but that "fluffy fur" will likely be the dreaded cotteny coat which mats VERY easy. However about the tearing eyes it could be that her fur is getting in her eyes when she lays down. One of my girls has that thick cotteny coat and eye staining is a problem. However the tearing itself can be almost stopped by using the Gerber Pure water you can get in jugs at WalMart. I have no boys but those that do think they are more affectionate. That is my 2 cents. Good luck and you will love who ever you choose. |
Hi there and I would find it hard to choose but watery eyes would not be a deal breaker for me. My sister's Yorkie had watery eyes, I told her to give him distilled water and they cleared up..I think they both are beautiful, why not both? LOL |
Oh my goodness - what a decision to have to make...!!! :) Firstly - are you absolutely sure that you can't have both?!!? ;) This is going to be a strictly personal opinion of mine. I really don't know anything about watery eyes - many will though! I can see what you mean though, slightly. Going on looks alone - I would choose the female. Going on looks and personality (including the bite-y bits where your daughter's concerned) - I would choose the male. I love your description of him following you around :) We've had many male and female dogs - our dog prior to Harry was Rosie the lab - she was sweet and biddable. Harry is a completely different character, partly the breed and partly because he's a boy. But he loves his mummy more than any dog we've ever had. As for the marking - Harry tried it once. I said 'NO' in a sharp voice - and he never did it again (that was over a year ago). Oh, good luck in your decision - I really don't envy you!! + congratulations on your soon-to-be-new-baby-boy-or-girl!!! :D Sally + Harry x |
Tough decision!!! Well, we have 3 boys and 1 girl! I do think boys are more affectionate, but our baby girl is pretty darn sweet too!! I have one that has watery eyes... (he is our blue born and has a white coat), so he stains very bad, HOWEVER he does not have issues due to this...just looks bad. But, we don't care...just one of the many things that defines him for who he is!! Just keep visiting them and you will just know who is right for you!! If they are just 7 weeks old now, you still have 5 weeks to decide!! |
Your probably not gonna like this answer but what I did in that situation was bought the boy pup put a down payment on the girl pup and went back a month later and bought the girl pup. Made my decision easy |
I have one of each. My boy I got as a pup and my girl was a retired show champion(different breeders). Both are love bugs, but my girl is totally devoted to me and can be standoffish to other people. My boy loves absolutely everyone! My breeder (show girl breeder) says that she now has a waiting list for boys and in past years everyone wanted girls. The eyes would make me choose the boy. |
Get them both :D. I don't think watery eyes necessarily means anything terrible she could have food or environmental allergies or she could just be reacting to the hair poking her eyes. Biting is a puppy thing and just about all puppies are doing to do it even if the boy is not doing it now more then likely he still will at some point it is something you have to train them not to do. |
Ziva(now 3) was a beautiful, high energy pup- we had the pick of litter- had to have her even tho there was a larger, easy going sister. I love her like crazy but "a handful" is an understatement. Her litter name was 'grace" because anyone who got her was going to need a lot of it! .Abby's litter name was "jane" because she was sooo plain, but the sweetest dog ever -now at 8 months we are amazed at how easy her puppy hood has been- never a bad moment, always the peacemaker with Ziva, would not even consider chewing on us or anything I tell her no to.Her coarse hair is now silky straight, smooth and never a knot or tangle.A real ugly duckling story! I would go for temperment, especially with an unsure child. |
Based on looks alone, I would go with the girl puppy. She has tiny features and a very cute face. I would not consider watery eyes to be a deal breaker. My male had watery eyes when he was younger (he is a little over a year now and it has stopped). I give him distilled water and it seemed to do the trick. I also make sure his hair is never poking into his eyes. The boy, may not play bite now, but that could change when he is teething. I have both a boy and a girl. My boy is a total cuddle bug and my girl is very affectionate but doesn't like to cuddle as much...she is always on the move. Could you get them both? |
i would want then both!! sorry i am of no help but they are both super cute. |
They are both so cute. |
I am waiting a litter right now to be born. We want a girl, but who knows I may be persuaded. |
Cute, cute, cute!! I'm no help at all - I would get both!:) |
They are both super cute! You definitely have a hard decision to make. I say get them both! :p |
