i'm angry

well i finally found a video that got me angry which is not easy as things don't usually get to me till i'm in the room with it. i was researching puppy births to get info together. now i know people in the US dock the tails of puppies but .....they filmed happy healthy puppies feeding off their mum filmed their tails wagging and said we'll soon fix that... picked one up clamped it's tail with forceps and twisted it till it came off while the puppy yelped in pain. he then waved the tail in front of the camera...at this point i stopped watching. i know in US tail docking is normal but he sounded like he was enjoying it...(from about 2:50) later i watched the rest...they were laughing as the claws came off. they ended the video laughing at the puppies trying to take tape off their ears. i did not tape tilly's ears and she still has a tail look at my face book link and as you see her ears are up and they were floppy when she was a puppy

From your description, I am not sure I can watch the video...:confused::( I have one with a docked tail and one with a natural tail.

i watched that video an have 2 say made me cringe!!!!...i am so glad my yorkie has a full tail...plus she has 1 straight ear an 1 floppy...do i care....nope....she is my baby and it is sooooooooo cruel to treat puppys this way....we should love our yorkies how they are born and not doctor them...i hope by you posting this it might stop people doing this to puppys..or buying them like this....sooooooooooo cruel!!!!

I have to say that Breeding is NOT for the faint of heart, I know docking is not everyone's favorite subject, beleive me mine either, even tho i get my son to use a topical anesthetic and do it as painless as he can, the clamp and twist method is still more humane than the cut and seal without anesthetic method used by some vets.
I pray every day that AKC will see the light and change the nonsense esthetic only tail docking..you dont want to face the "other" hundreds of practices that are ok with some breeders, ...even the most experience breeder will loose pups, moms and entire litters, Breeding is NOT all that people think...
good luck in your adventure.. is not a pretty one by any means..

I've seen that video before, and I think it's horrible. I know it's the standard, but he doesn't have to enjoy doing it so much.

candigirl 02-27-2012 02:55 PM

I watched this video a while ago when i was just considering getting a yorkie. It's hard to watch because the poor pups are in pain but from what i can see he seems like a really caring breeder to me. I don't think he or anyone there is deriving some sort of sick pleasure from doing this either. Like someone else noted it's unfortunately the standard and he's just showing how it's done.

not watching.

marcie 02-27-2012 03:01 PM

I don't know how most do it. However, Marcie's breeder took hers
to the vet. Which also is my family's vet. I just can't imagine her
laughing and acting like such a fool.

Honestly I don't think they are enjoying the procedure, just my humble opinion, I think that the know that is being recorded they don't want to sound like they are abusing the babies, I know I cringe while my son is doing my litters, and I KNOW is been done humanely and with anesthetic.. is hard to understand, and MOST vets, do the cut and seal method without any anesthetic because the babies are way to young and small to use any anesthesia at all, only topical anesthetics can be use in this small of babies and most vets don't put the time to let it work before they cut.. I know some around me my son worked for a day practice that did dockings, that is how he practice good docking.

I hate to see our babies in pain but it is the standard I feel the same about the procedure for our skin boys with no anesthesia but its what they do :(.

LILBIT1 02-27-2012 03:43 PM

not watching!

southernbelle04 02-27-2012 04:06 PM

I'm afraid I can't watch either. I know I would just cry!

Joyce Adams 02-27-2012 04:58 PM

I can't watch these kind of films...breaks my heart to see any animal hurting.

JacksMomma 02-27-2012 05:48 PM

I can honestly see why this makes anyone angry..It hurt me to watch..honestly. I definitely know after watching this that I COULD NEVER breed..I just could not do these things to any puppy...I just would not be able to do it.. My jack does have a docked tail...but I really had no choice, as I did not find my breeder until right before I was able to get him..so he was 10 weeks old when I found him, tail already docked. The only way you would be able to find a pup with no docked tail, is to find a breeder before they are born, right? And tell them about your preference. I personally do not see why AKC will only have yorkshire terriers with docked tails..that is dumb to me..I think it should be the owner's preference...personally, but that's just my two cents.

Yorkiemom1 02-27-2012 05:55 PM

I dock my tails on Day 2 or Day 3....the nerve endings develop from the head down, and the nerves in the tail are not fully developed until after Day 5....which is why if you have not done this by Day 5, the entire procedure changes to a surgical procedure, with local anesthesia, scissors or scaple, suturing.....and it is more painful. With the hemostat method, you clamp and twist and the baby yelps when the clamp is first applied...the tail is twisted and the end is sealed...there is NO bleeding involved, and the puppy does not cry at all after that first clamp is made. It truly is very quick and essentially painless, and the tip of the tail has a very nice "shaped tip" doing this. I MUST admit, I too can not wait for the breed standard and the AKC to change the "mandatory" docked tail for showing....Against professional advise from several breeders, I had one litter that I decided I was NOT going to dock the tails....I almost NEVER got those babies homes! So, until the mind set changes with the majority of people, I just cringe and breathe deeply and do it.... (I learned how to dock tails when I worked for a vet in the late 60's- early 70's)
