Help Bitting.. I think.. So Miss Brandy goes out every sat to play with her friend Sliky and everything was ok till Sliky's mommy said that Brandy bit Silky while playing. I must not have eyes and didn't see that at all. Ok so I let it go and picked her up and waited till Silky's mom claim down.. He is 2 years old and Brandy is 6months, at home she is just fine and when playing with my son to get his attention he tugs his clothing which she did to Silky but his mommy didn't see that just a bit.. I think I dealed with it till she started to tell other people Brandy doesn't play nice and bites.. I got so mad I went home..So Silky's mom said I need to scream at her when she dose that and hit her on the nose for her to stop.. I don't believe in hitting my pup so I brushed it off. Dose anyone have any suggestion to help me to get Brandy to stop tugging on things, so she could play better? She is teething and is not bitting anyone.. but I want to train her on camand not to nip, bite or tug.. how do I do it? Help please I don't want her to be lable a bad dog.. because of a tug... |
Hi , you are so right about no hitting. Hitting only makes the puppy scared. Try teaching her the leave it command. That works for just about everything. Start out with a little treat. Get her to sit in front of you, put the treat on the floor and say " leave it" , if she starts to move don't say the command again just say ah, ah , ah, when she is still then say "leave it" . If she is still for a second say "ok, get it"... Then tell her how good she is. Just keep practicing this till she can leave it longer and longer. Once she knows what "leave it" means . You can use this command when she is tugging on your clothes, say "leave it" and when she does give her a toy . Hope this helps |
For nipping biting while playing, I always use No Bite. I say it in a firm voice and remove her mouth. If she keeps going after three No Bites, I walk away. Game over. It didn't take Tink long to learn at all that if she uses her teeth in anyway the fun is over. The Leave It and Drop It commands are also really good ones to get them to learn. |
thank you so much I need to work on it.. she knows come and stop and sometimes sit if she want to play.. It's just hard to hear others say bad things about your baby.. |
I totally agree with the no hitting and not yelling a firm serious tone works in my house. Biting nibbling it's play time, Silkies mum needs a glass of wine and a valium to help her chill. Your dog is fine |

Brandy is 6 months old? That's a baby! They play bite! I think it is just wrong to try to condition them to not play at that age....if Silky's mother doesn't understand that, then Brandy shouldn't play with him at all....just my 2 cents. |

Brandy is only doing what is a natural puppy behavior & I would be careful trying to teach her yourself as you do not want her to think that it's not OK to play. |
NewYorksBrandy: "Silky is 2 years old and Brandy is 6 months" Silky has age and knowledge on his side, then. "Silky's mommy said that Brandy bit Silky while playing. I must not have eyes and didn't see that at all." Did Silky 'cry' when bitten? You don't need eyes to hear a pup yelp in pain. If not, that would, to me, indicate there was no pain and/or no biting, and/or if there was biting, that Silky knew it was play or Brandy's puppy-dom. "Brand is a little bigger the him..." Like how much...1 - 2 lbs.? Or 10 lbs.? Is Silky ill or does he have a physical impairment that makes him too fragile for play? "...I'm afraid she might have told the other furbaby mommies..." I wouldn't want my pups playing with any dog who's mum was that mean...! "...waited till Silky's mom calm down..." ...'cuz thumpin'er with a chiller stick seems a bit rude, too! lmao :p Teegy: If Silky was not distressed by it, then certainly... "Silkies mum needs a glass of wine and a valium to help her chill" ...and there is no reason for discipline, and definitely... "...no hitting and not yelling a firm serious tone..." ..would only even be necessary IF/WHEN the biting is NOT play and understood as "NOT PLAY" by Silky. RustysMom: "Brandy is 6 months old? That's a baby! They play bite! I think it is just wrong to try to condition them to not play at that age....if Silky's mother doesn't understand that, then Brandy shouldn't play with him at all....just my 2 cents." ...and a glass of wine, valium, or even some nice chamomile tea wouldn't hurt her ! My two play bite all the time and often there'll be a yelp as a little too much pressure is clamped down on an ear...or leg...and all I do about it is...well, mostly nothing...'cuz it's all over by then anyway! Maybe I should have that glass of wine... :D lillymae: "I doubt that Brandy will hurt Silky & if she gets outta control then most likely Silky will discipline her as doggies do. Brandy could actually benefit from playing with some older dogs as she needs to be taught how not to play too ruff & the best way is to let another dog of her size to teach her. I believe Miss Brandy was taken away from her doggy mommy before 12 wks ? & mommy dog would have taught her the do's & dont's of playing. Brandy is only doing what is a natural puppy behavior & I would be careful trying to teach her yourself as you do not want her to think that it's not OK to play." That'd be my guess, too! :D |
I do not think Brandy is doing anything wrong. She is still a baby...she is play biting. Piper is 6 months old and play bites with Teddy. Silky's mom needs to chill! |

Thank you guys I really thought I may have missed something when training miss Brandy.. We use lots of signs and signals to understand each other.. She knows when to stop and when to back off.. I don't use any training that will hurt her in any way.. it's funny because she signals me everything she wants something I really feel like she is my baby girl because my son does the same.. I find it so funny how smart these pups are..Play biting and tugging is away we play sometimes.. she has stoped biting us and our shoes for almost a month now.. I know she will get better but before I let her play with other doggies I make sure I tell their parent that Brandy is a puppy still and she does the things she does.. they understand and don't mind but Silky's mom hurt my feelings.. She trys to tell me about Brandy's training but Mr. Silky is not potty trained and he's two.. |
Nip the Nip Sounds like your puppy just gets over excited. Puppies nip each other and play rough. Depending on his age and stage of development here are a few things that may help. 1. After You say a dramatic high pitched Oucheeeeeeeeeeeeeee ! Immediately put him on the floor or turn your back or walk away and ignore for about 5 seconds. He needs to learn 'Never put teeth on people, because they will stop playing. If love bites are not corrected it can lead to real bites that break skin. 2. If he nips while playing say 'Enough" and give him a toy instead of your hand and say 'Good TOY' when he bites the toy. Your cue word does not have to be Enough, You can use what ever feels right for you, like NO, or STOP IT. What ever cue word you use, say the same cue every time. Everyone in your family should use the same Cue words. (I do not like to say No Bite because, then you have to teach a new cue word for barking, rough play, fighting with other pets etc..) Enough is easy to use , and it always means Stop what you are doing right now ! Please do not play tug of war type of games with your puppy. This is too exciting for them, they get in that rip up the prey trance and you may get nipped. |
