Hi , you are so right about no hitting.
Hitting only makes the puppy scared.
Try teaching her the leave it command.
That works for just about everything.
Start out with a little treat.
Get her to sit in front of you, put the treat on the floor and say
" leave it" , if she starts to move don't say the command again just say
ah, ah , ah, when she is still then say "leave it" . If she is still for a second say "ok, get it"... Then tell her how good she is.
Just keep practicing this till she can leave it longer and longer.
Once she knows what "leave it" means . You can use this command when she is tugging on your clothes, say "leave it" and when she does give her a toy . Hope this helps |
Another modification of this game is to have the puppy sit, hold the treat in the palm of your hand open, if puppy moves towards it close your hand immediately and say "leave it", once puppy backs off open the hand again, repeat until puppy stays, then say "get it"... If you add this smaller step before putting it on the floor it helps if you don't have quick reflexes. Eventually you put it on the floor and cover it if the puppy moves towards it. After a few weeks you can start getting closer and closer to your puppy until you start laying them on the puppy's paws or nose and say "leave it" and then "get it" when they can have it. Eventually as said above you can apply the "leave it" to anything. |
