I was at the shop buying deer antlers for Norman yesterday. The owner and I had a slightly risque conversation about bully sticks. I said that I'd never buy them so he 'gifted' me a few for Norman to try...fast forward to today, he LOVES them! So, of course, what he likes, and what isn't going to hurt him, he will get...I will have to go back to the shop with 'my tail between my legs' to buy some... However, I will maintain some sort of standard - I will not buy the BRAIDED ones...they make me think something along the line of "cruel and unusual punishment" even though the bulls don't know!!

I second that. ZoE goes nutz for them. She used to demolish a 6inch in no time, so now I only buy the 12 inch, so they last a while. Who said size doesn't matter in these things?

Thought your post was very cute! As for me......

Bully sticks are not allowed in my house....nor are any other type of digestible chew. The only thing my pups have that is digestible is their food and treats. That is enough. Not taking chances on GI issues, obstructions and other problems. ..not because of what they are made of.

I just hope that there aren't any aliens out there who do the same with humans as we do to bulls... Reminds me of that infamous Twilight Zone Episode with the big Alien Menu titled "how to serve humans."

Gracie once decided to chew one of her bully sticks from the center out. What a mess that made! I had to throw it out. Thankfully she has decided the ends are a better place to start now. The ends sometimes get mushy but as long as she does not chew for too long the end will firm up after she lets it sit for a while. When I first started getting them she would chew a couple of hours a day. Now she just chews when she is super charged about something. But when she needs to chew I am glad she has them. She no longer goes around stealing items from around the house to chew on.

Gracie can't break off pieces of the stick. As they chew it does become somewhat soft but just soft enough to clean the teeth. I don't know what a dog like a pit bull could do to the stick but Gracie cannot do anything but get a little bit of fiber off it. There is a 1.30% fat content. I buy the 12" regular size. They are as big as she is but she doesn't mind. They are a god sent for a dog that has the chewing urge and are an excellent aid for helping to keep the teeth clean. I have noticed that some companies sell an inferior grade of the item. The Best Bully brand seems to be the most consistent in quality.

I agree that a natural uncooked bone is also good but you can't keep them as long without the problem of contamination and I find it difficult to find fresh bones small enough for Gracie's mouth.
