When it rains, it pours. On top of everything else little Tina is going through, I noticed yesterday one of her ears is completely closed. She hurt her ear awhile back, we think on something in the garage. That is when we were letting her have alittle more free range before the dementia really got bad. Took her to the vet and it healed somewhat. Still would bleed off and on and then I had her ears cleaned about a month or so ago. I had not clipped her or bathed her because even though I have heat in the garage where their bath tube is, she gets sooo cold with losing so much hair. She is too old and sick to be put under for them to do anything about this. I guess, what I'm asking if anyone has ever heard of anything like this and with it closed will infection set up in there. I don't know. I know I will end up calling my vet, but, I was absolutely shocked. It looks like little nolocules (sp) in her ear and just closed it up. Gosh, what else? Poor little baby. I would not think of them putting her under to do anything. She would never live through it. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this? |
Oh, gosh yes, you need to get that opened up right away. The secretions in the ear will cause a raging infection. The ear has to have access to the air. It must be painful to her right now just from the pressure. I know how hard it is with vet bills but that is serious. |
That should be looked at by your vet. It could be abcessed already and that could be what you're seeing as "closed up". I would imagine that could be quite painful. |
Got a call into my vet right now. Waiting on her to call me back. Like I said, she has took care of our dogs for years and she is wonderful. I got to thinking they might could use a local on her and open that ear. It looks just like the skin from where she was hurt just covered her ear. Her being so tiny and the vet that did their ears when we bought her cut her ears too short. She has tiny ears for a schnauzer. Didn't take much for it to close. I just had not clipped them since they were cleaned and her hair grew out and I didn't notice. Will let ya know what my vet says. We do whatever we have to do for our babies. Someone mentioned vet bills. We don't consider that when our babies need something. I just feel bad I didn't notice. I would have if I had bathed her but, like I said it has been too cold for her and her health condition. |

Well, its just that we are right at having to put her down. I just don't want her to go through no more. Poor little baby is just where she cannot even stand alone to tee tee and bathing her is really a chore. If I had just noticed earlier. She eats, sleeps and doesn't act like she is in pain. Whats strange is it looked so good and had quit bleeding and the vet said it would heal on up on its on. Looked great and then when we got her ears cleaned, I wonder if that had something to do with it. I wish the vet would hurry up and call. |
Don't be so hard on yourself. You don't know what's going on under the initial cut. An infection can be working on itself for days under the skin before you ever realize there is a problem, and that is "if" that's what it is. If she's not showing any signs of pain, it is very possible you still caught it early or it is something else altogether. Let us know what your vet says, and give your girl an extra hug. |
I just don't understand how something healed, could do that. I was so proud of how it was looking because whatever she cut it on, did a job on the inside of her ear. We think she may have cut it on the garage door but no for sure because she goes in under anything and everything. Dementia is horrible whether its a person or animal. So sad. Thats why she is watched so close now. It didn't bleed or anything after her ears were cleaned...Just gets me, I don't know. |
Well, if the tissue is punctured deep enough it must heal from the inside out or it will cause an abcess. What happens is the surface tissue heals faster over deeper tissue and it can appear "healed." Then the inner tissue that is not yet healed cannot get air, causing a pocket inside the tissue. Bacteria and infection begins and forms an abcess or pocket of infection. This is why with deep tissue cuts, it is very important to keep them clean and open so they can heal from the inside out. That is just how an abcess can form. They can form anywhere on the body from something as minor as being poked by a stick or thorn, but that is not to say for sure what is goin on with your girl as only a vet can determine that. The good thing is, "if" this is the problem, once an abcess is opened up they heal rather quickly and actually provide almost immediate relief. |
I havent heard of it but Im sorry for your girl having it on top of her other problems. I hope the vet gets it open. I understand how your kinda stuck inbetween a rock and a hard place since she cant be put under. Im keeping her in my good thoughts and prayers |
Going to the vet. Pray for me because I have not drove in 2yrs. because of my health. She said she had to see Tina, but they would not consider surgery of any kind because she was too fragile. They are thinking shooting an antibotic down inside someway and I don't know, I will just have to see what they have in mind. She said she had seen that alot but in Tina's case there is not alot that can be done. She said it would be major surgery and she would not put her through that. I know she thinks we should have her put down because she is so bad but I just can't face that right now and by myself. Dh doesn't get home until about 6 and they close at 6. Just pray they can help her and I don't kill us getting us there. |
Awh yes poor thing. About the bathing, can you used a waterless shampoo, and some unscented baby wipes, until the weather warms up? Another option is to just do mini baths, like the paws legs, one day (if hubby can help, you can speed up the wash time), maybe butt and face the next day or two days later. Also heated towels to wrap her in after bath. If you use conditioner use the leave in kind, that way she doesn't have to have another rinse. I also would look at getting a nice xpen for her (if you don't already), and letting her roam, safely in this pen. If she is used to following you i n the house, depending on how much she weighs, how about a papoose that you can carry her in , leaving your arms free to work. |
Praying for you that you get there safely and with no stress |
Sending prayers your way. Sending good thoughts it won't be something serious. |
Sending prayers...know that what ever choice you make for her treatment, it is the right one. You know what is best, whatever that may be. |

We are back from the vet. Thank goodness my vet is only about 3 or 4 min. away. She basically told me what she did on the phone. There was a small hole in Tina's ear that we can put ointment, but, she is not up to no surgery. In fact, I could tell she really thought I should make the discission to let her go. She was upset too because she has took care of my dogs and Tina since she was a baby. She has lost another 2lbs. She is at 7lbs. The little thing was upset and I just could not make that call right now. I know dh is going to be upset because I told her, he thinks as long as TIna is eating and she eats like a little pig, she will be okay for right now. She has no quality of life staying in her playpen. Its big and she can walk around but she has no life except what we do for her. I know now its just a matter of time and it kills me. Please just remember us in your prayers. |
Im sorry! I agree with your husband though I would give it more time if she ever gets to where she is in pain or further decline then you will need to give serious consideration if its her time to go |
Sending up prayers for your family, I know this has to be so hard. |
I do understand about sweet Tina. Prayers and hugs for you and her. |
I'm so sorry. I hope your little girl heals quickly and that you can rest easier. I know how much you love Tina and why your heart is breaking so much. I am certain that Tina can still feel your love. You continue to be in my prayers. |
I went through something like this a couple of years ago. My little guy was 15 years old. He could still walk pretty well and he ate but he was not himself. He stopped doing the things he used to do and slept a lot. He just didn't seem like the same dog. Didn't interact like he had before. It is confusing trying to figure out what is best for the dog. I finally realized I was doing him no favors by letting him go on like that. He was not enjoying life anymore. I had to have two of my kids take him to the vet because I was wreck just thinking about it. I guess I thought it would be easier to know the right time but it's not as clear cut as we would like it to be. I pray both of you will know the right thing to do and when. |

I had foot surgery years ago and had 'pins' through my toes and feet (both feet and large toes) out though the skin inside the bandages. I got a pin track infection in my left big toe which was treated and healed, leaving a tiny 'scar' marking. Two years later I noticed something on the toe in the former pin track infection area and went to an orthopedic surgeon who confirmed that it was another pin track infection in the location of the first. He also determined that the bone had not healed and was talking bone graft. Interestingly, two weeks later, the bone WAS healed!:p I am so sorry what is happening to your baby and hope it can be remedied quickly for her comfort and to spare you additional concerns during this difficult time. :hands: |
Praying for your little baby ; hope all goes well. Take care of. Susan |
I can empathize with you. I'm so sorry and I'm keeping you and Tina in my thoughts and prayers. |
Talked to my husband tonite and he feels like she is going down fast too. I think he finally agrees that it would be better to let her go. Now just to know the right time and not rush into anything, we love her so much. I think we will know the right time. We did with Max and Mandy and I feel like we will with her. |
Did she have this ear problem before the dementia started? Ears have a lot to do with balance... and infection can cause weight loss. Did the vet give her any oral meds for the ear? |
Yes, I have ointment to put in her ear. There is a tiny hole that, thank goodness we can put it into. She hurt her ear because of the dementia. No one realizes how hard it is until your baby suffers from that. They forget where to go potty, they run into things, they get hung up in places you would not believe. Thats why for her protection she has to stay in her playpen. The minute she is put down, she goes right into something. She cut her ear bad on something, we have no idea. Thats when we were giving her alittle bit more leaway and she has been hurt twice. We think it was on the garage door because that is where she will go and stand. When their little eyes are just empty and they don't seem to recognize you, it hurts so much. Tina was always so full of life. Its hard to see her deterorating right before I eyes. Like I have said, the scar tissue in her ear would be major surgery. If she was younger and in good health we would not hesitate to have it done. But, she is 14 and half and has congestive heart failure, which she is on meds for plus all her other problems and I would not consider putting her through that. Besides, my vet would not do it. This is just killing us going through this but I am going to have to come to grips with it, for her. The weight loss comes from the CHF. There is nothing that can be done there. Like I said, just pray for us and our baby. We do all we can for our babies without hesitation, but, there comes a time when we can't fix it. |
Aw! I'm so sorry...I did not intend to come off sounding insensitive... I have seen pups before...mine used to insist on getting under the dining room chairs, inbetween all the chair rungs and then get all tripped up, where I couldn't get to her fast enough before she would fall. Never went there before in her life. Also working at the Pet ER exposed me to alot of things most folks never see, nor could imagine. I just thought if her ear cleared up, maybe she could regain something, but you are right, I don't believe there is enough time to see any benefit from it. She has lived a good, long life, being loved by good people, her time to rest will come soon. Bless you for loving her as much as you do. I don't think she could ask for anything more. |
No, no, I understand what you are saying. Its just when they get dementia, it is a whole new ballgame. She can't be left a minute. Back when she hurt her ear, we were still letting her roam around some and just moving things she might get hurt on. I wish everything was fixable, we are going to miss that little girl ALOT. |
