Need good healthy treat ideas Good afternoon all :) I wanted to know if anyone can suggest any good treats that are on the softer side that are good for training? Strudel is turning his nose up at crunchy treats at the moment, except for his bully stick  He's getting so good at his potty training but every time I give him a bit of hard treat he gets happy but doesn't eat it. I feel so bad! Plus I know he will get even better with training and tricks - I taught him high five yesterday and today! - with a treat that he goes gaga for. I know something with chees in it and strong smell will make him happy! Thanks! |
Have you tried Cesar treats? Not sure how healthy but I take the little ones with the paw print and break it into 4 little pieces and they are soft. I have bought mine at Walmart. they are in a little silver and purple pouch. Since I get 4 pieces out of one little treat it isn't as filling. |
When the boys were puppies, they LOVED the Wellness just for puppy treats. I would break them apart into about 6 pieces. They are healthy and soft. They have never said no to the dehydrated liver treats either ;) |

My girls LOVE Hollywood Stars liver treats, but given that the bag only costs a dollar at WM, I'm sure they aren't healthy : / Petco sells Wet Noses Organic Little Stars training treats in cheese, chicken, and sweet potato flavors... which look like the perfect size, but I don't know about their texture. |
Hi, we have the Cesar ones too. I ordered Zukes Mini All Naturals. They are about the size of a pencil eraser and I cut them in half or fourths. Very strong smelling and soft. My puppy LOVES them. They are only 3 calories a piece and all natural so healthy. I got the 6 oz bag incase they were to dry out faster. Recommended by the trainer I met with. |
Believe it or not, mine like green beans. Lol. Also, other fruits and veggies. Just make sure they are safe for them. Carrots are good too. |

i have used life abundance one as well, but they have to be ordered on line. Try a sweet potato, cook it less than half of the time you would do for yourself, so it is firm, but not raw, then skin it and cut it into french fry size pieces, for training cut it into very small chunks. You could also try cooking a natural chicken breast. I do mine in a little bit of water in a covered pot so it sort of steams. I cook it for about 30 min. until it starts to shred and then cut that up in tiny pieces. For training put a few pieces of each in a small plastic bag and store what you don't use in a tupperware container in the fridge. |
Healthy treats I looked for ages for HEALTHY soft treats that I could break up for training etc. My dog eats Blue Buffalo Adult (BB) Chicken and Rice kibble and the treats are BB "Blue Bites, Chicken. They are soft and about 1 inch square and he will do ANYTHING for them! I only break off the tiniest piece and it works! I also give Natural Balance Small Breed Sweet Potato & Chicken hard treats for teeth etc. Both of these treats have good safe healthy ingredients (for most dogs anyway). I read labels like a hawk after the food recall some years ago and am very careful now. They do cost more than many treats but are worth it. I do also give Pure Bites dried pure chicken breast as a very special occasional treat or if he is off his food (RARELY!) and needs protein. These are expensive but last for ever in the fridge. I know I praise BB foods but am so happy with them - I do not have any commercial or other interest. LOL. Enjoy!! |
I like to use freeze dried chicken or liver as special high value treats. |
Mine wont eat any of those crunchy type of treats or biscuits. They like Puperoni |

I also cook chicken livers, cool them, cut them up quite small and use as a treat, stored in the fridge. Harry'll do anything for a bit of chicken liver....;) :D Sally + Harry x |
Mine love dried fruits. You can buy the assorted ones in a pouch. Just cute them in tiny pieces and put them in a zip loc snack bag. ;) |
