Wanted To Know Info On Yorkie

I have a 6 month old male Yorkie and wanted to know when can i start giving him treats? Please someone let me know the info. Thanks & GOD Bless

You can give him treats anytime. What kind of treats were you thinking of using? No matter what the age, just be sure not to overdo it, and to make sure the treats are safe.

Depending on your pup's size, treats should be very small and limited. Each piece should be the size of an eraser on a pencil. You can give many pieces throughout the day, but keep in mind that you are feeding a tiny pup. They don't need a tablespoon of anything except at their regular meals.

I give my boys plain Greek yogurt every day after our walks. They are 8 and 9 pounds, and I give them a total of less than a teaspoon. I dip a spoon into the yogurt and let them lick it off. They both have had yogurt from the times they were little pups.

They also get 4-5 smashed baby sweet peas. I use the frozen, no salt added kind.

A lot people use thin carrot slices, apple, sweet potato, green beans, Gerber puffs.

Store-bought treats for dogs are okay too. Stay away from fatty things like Pupperoni. PetSmart and Petco carry healthier treats than what you would typically find at grocery stores, Walmart, or Target.

There are Yorkie Talk vendors who sell home-made treats too. Visit the product sale section to look for those.

Look for treats that are not made in China.

There are very few chews that I like because so many have had salmonella and other problems that resulted in recalls.

My boys like Himalayan chews. RDB911 sells them here. We also just started using CET chews that we bought at our vet's office. Be very careful with those as they can be a choking hazard. I hold them for my boys and watch closely.

Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings this is a good website, it will explain how to read treat labels. There are a lot of healthy things you can use as treats. Cook a sweet potato to the point that it is cooked but still fairly firm, cut it into sticks,(like fat shoe string potatoes), steam some boneless chicken and shred it or cut it into small pieces, cut up pieces of apples and carrots are also good. I put all that in a container and keep it handy in the fridge. Since I have started to do that i have hardly had to buy a treat. But I do buy milk bone type items, and let her have one or two a day, that seems to keep her teeth clean. None of my other yorkies would chew dry biscuit type bone and their teeth and breath were not nearly as good as Lola's
